  4. I had the pleasure of fossil hunting in Hungry Hollow with some new friends from this forum on Sunday. The temperature was perfect and though the day could have been more fruitful, some of the specimens we found were impressive, in my eyes anyway. Kevin (Northern Sharks) showed me how to spot Goniatite ammonoids (Tornoceras arkonense) in the South Pit of Hungry Hollow and once I knew what to look for, I found some along with some interesting crinoid sections! He also found a button coral (Microcyclus thedfordensis) and kindly gave it to me for my new collection. Kevin found 2 different varieties of blastoids - a great find! We also had 2 paleontologists in our company, Kevin (#2) and Matt (sorry no last names) and Kevin #2's nephew Jesse. So the 5 of us hiked down the river's edge to an amazing outcrop of rocks to search for trilobites. I didn't have the right tool for splitting shale but I had a great time flipping and splitting what I could with my trowel and digging through rubble to find the brachiopods. It was just a nice experience being there to see how it's done by the professionals! With the sound of the river passing by, nothing could be finer (except maybe to find a few more of those awesome bugs!). Here is a collection of my new treasures! Does anyone know what the brownish spongy looking thing is? (1" long)

    Puzzling Symmetry

This puzzling (to me) piece was found in the wash of Little Walnut Creek in Austin, TX. There are indentations down both sides that appear to be symmetrical, with one part broken away. Where there are indentations on one side, the reverse side has corresponding ridges. I find a lot of Cretaceous marine material here (Exogyra, Lopha, Inoceramus, etc), but haven't seen anything quite like this before. What do you think this might be? Thanks in advance for your consideration.

    Middle Devonian Ammonoid

I found this tiny pyritized treasure at Portland Point (Middle Devonian, Moscow formation) back in March. My camera wasn't capable of zooming in sufficiently to resolve the detail, but I was finally able to get a friend at PRI to photograph it, yesterday. Can anyone help with an identification? According to Linsley's table of New York Devonian Ammonoid Ranges, there are only two species that are found in the Moscow formation: Agoniatites unilobatus and Tornoceras uniangulare. Neither seems like a close match to my specimen, perhaps because it's so much smaller than those illustrated in Linsley.

    Ammonite In Pa

I photographed this Ammonoid fossil which is about 5 to 6 inches across on a very large block of rock, on a breakwater near a bridge near Williamsport, Pennsylvania...assume it is an ammonite. No other information. The rock was too large and too solid to fragment or reduce in size. We did not "collect" this specimen but given the enthusiasm from our fossil hunting friends, we're thinking of going back to get it. Any comments would be appreciated.
