@digit Soft shelled turtle Apalone sp. Pleistocene Peace River Arcadia, Fl Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida Days after Ken @digit posted a notice about FLMNH looking for Florida turtle/tort specimens, I found this it was meant to be donated. I have never seen a turtle anywhere near complete come out of the Peace. On top of that there is enough to identify it as female! A few months ago Ken @digit, had a post looking for Florida turtle specimens for a Flmnh project. A week later I went to the Peace and found this Apalone softshell. I hoping Ken post requests for a carnivore project next. After the Tampa Club fossil show this guy's new home will be at FLMNH. I also have quite a few vertebrae to prep as soon as I find some time.

Story of a softshell turtle (Apalone sp.) from start to finish

Here is a photo heavy and (for me) text light posting showing the sequence of Tammy and I finding a partial softshell turtle (Apalone sp.) carapace in the field at Montbrook (which was jacketed and removed on the last day of the spring digging season). I pulled the jacked and prepped the carapace over the course of a few months. The jacket was made in the field on 5-May-2021 and I retrieved the jacket (#573) from the storage area on 10-Jun-2021 and completed the prep today 23-Sep-2021. Lots of excavation into the jacket and cleaning and re-attaching parts. The pectoral girdle (scapula and corocoid bones) as well as the first cervical vertebra were left in the position where they were found to preserve the taphonomic information. A fun project that taught me a lot about fossil prep. Cheers. -Ken

Last season was a great season at the quarry. For those who dont know, our quarry is in the Fossil Butte member of the Green River Formation in southern Wyoming. We ended up with three turtles coming out. Two of them were large turtles, 48" (Apalone heteroglypta) and 52" (Chisternon undatum), and they were found stacked above one another, separated by only 7 inches, and a tiny little guy that is a new species. I will post pictures of these amazing fossils as they are finished up. We have Brock @ebrocklds doing the preparation work for us on these three amazing fossils. Here are pictures of the Apalone. You can see it took us a bit of time to excavate and collect all of the tiny pieces. It was in a large fracture zone in the rock. Enjoy.
