Anyone in MD, Chesapeake Bay area going hunting this Saturday?
Mara_Masina posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hey all, This weekend I was going to go on a trip with folks from my fossil club, but they cancelled last minute and I've already paid for a hotel room in the area. Therefore, weather be darned, I'm going fossil hunting anyway. Is anyone else going out on Saturday that might want company? I'm a pretty relaxed human who typically matches the energy in the room, as I like to be inoffensive and approachable. I just figured that it would be awesome to hunt with another forum member or two instead of going it alone.- 14 replies

Ok I think I’m gonna be posting fairly regularly on this site from now on. So I’m a DC native, which means that the amount of fossils in dc are mostly sparse. However, neighboring PG county is a hotbed for all types of stuff! In the future, I’ll post my dinosaur stuff from here (still on my bucket list to find a tooth). In the mean time, I’ve just recently came back from southern PG county and I came away with some pretty cool stuff. The shells that come out of this creek are to die for. They’re some of the most intresting I’ve ever seen! But what I’m really excited about are the shark teeth!

Hey everyone, realizing right now that I haven't posted any fossils of my own in quite a while on the forum. Anyway, I found this tooth back in 2016 on my trip to the potomac river in maryland. It was found at purse state park which has exposures of the paleocene Aquia formation. When I first took a closer look at this tooth I was surprised to see that it had a shape which I had associated with Tiger sharks. I did some research online and found that Pachygaleus would be a match as they are present in that strata. It has been a while since that initial discovery but I wanted to confirm my idea

PaleoNoel's Fossil Hunting Chronicles: Potomac of Maryland, April 2016
PaleoNoel posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I would consider 2016 to be the year that my fossil hunting career really took off, I had spent trips prior to this grooming and developing my skills and it began to show in this period. My school vacations have always been the time where I've been able to get out into the field and go fossil hunting, this particular opportunity was afforded to me by my class trip to Washington D.C. which then lead into my April vacation. Having devised a plan to go fossil hunting before leaving, my dad picked me up at the end of the DC visit before the rest of the group took the grueling bus ride back to -
Went for my first time to purse state park proper (Douglas point is my usual Potomac haunt). Mostly for micro, but I did a bit of surface hunting. Found this beautiful vert, find of the day by far (disappointing otherwise). I’ve no clue what it is, though I assume some sort of gharial. My quick research brought me to eosuchus being the best candidate. With a surprising resemblance to champsosaurus but I think that’s unlikely. Any ideas? Gonna go ahead and tag @MarcoSr. Thanks!

I’ve been searching through some micro recently and I found this little (about 1 cm) tooth. If someone were to show it to me I’d say it could be a lemon or maybe a carcharhinus lower. Of course if that’s what it were I wouldn’t be posting it here. The catch: this is from the Late Paleocene Aquia Formation. Am I just missing something incredibly obvious or what? I’ve never heard of a Paleocene carcharhinus or negaprion. Any thoughts?

Went on a hunt to add to my collection, as well as to gather trading material. Hunted about 2 hours and found more shark teeth than my attention span will allow me to count (I stoped counting at 40) only a few otodus and cretolamnas, one possible well worn croc, some bone pieces, and a ton of turritella internal molds. Only took one piece of lignite, lots in the banks (of course off limits). Tons of Ray teeth as always. No Paleocarcharodon or huge otoduses, but all in all a good trip. Here's the total haul:
