This is a Cretaceous oyster that I found in Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas. The oyster has traces of a yellowish calcite-cemented sandstone found in the upper part of the Arcadia Park Formation of the Eagle Ford Group. "Pediformis" in the name, Ostrea alifera var. pediformis, means foot-shaped or pediform because the oyster looks like a foot or boot. In Hill 1898, the author eliminated the Ostrea alifera Cragin, and Ostrea alifera var. pediformis Cragin names because he considered them to be Ostrea lugubris Conrad. I disagree with Hill's decision because my oyster is larger than most O. lugubris (now Cameleolopha lugubris) and lacks an attachment scar characteristic of O. lugubris. My oyster may be a genus Cameleolopha since both Cameleolopha bellaplicata and Cameleolopha lugubris occur nearby. Unless new information can be found, my oyster should be called: Ostrea alifera variety pediformis Craigin. A few weeks ago I was working an exposure of the middle Turonian Kamp Ranch member of the Arcadia Park Formation in North Texas, using a chisel and the natural bedding planes to pull up slabs. I had been there less than 15 minutes and had only found one small, broken tooth amongst shell hash when I found this almost perfect medium sized Cretodus crassidens. I also found some smaller shark teeth including Ptychodus sp., miscellaneous vertebrate material, and ammonites of possibly multiple species. So far this specimen is my largest from the site The first thing I noticed about it was the white color of most of the enamel and strange patterns covering the exposed tooth. It looked like it had been recently exposed and weathered, but since it was only exposed by me pulling up slabs that is not possible. All the other teeth I found there didn’t have this type of preservation but had the normal brown enamel. I have searched for pictures of any other teeth with patterns like this, but so far nothing. I prepared it out of the rock and can see that the patterns occur on both the front and back of the blade and root. It is 35 mm diagonal and 25 mm root width. It was resting just a few millimeters above a large inoceramid shell. The tooth is perfect except that the tip of the left cusp broke off before fossilization. There are certain areas where the blade isn’t white and there are no patterns, but for the most part the pattern covers the tooth. I was also able to rub off a bit of the white with my finger, but it seems that the patterns are embedded in the tooth itself since it is also on the root. Here are some pictures. I am hoping the origin of these patterns can be explained and any links and/or pictures of other teeth like this can be provided. The first three are before prep and the rest are after. I recently went hunting for my first time in the Turonian Arcadia Park Formation, an Eagle Ford group shale formation in North Texas. I found some great fossils, but many of them are fragile. I found a Worthoceras sp. specimen in matrix that seems to be on the verge of falling apart, and a very small Metoicoceras sp. specimen in a similar situation. They both have the nacreous shell preserved. Many of the other ammonites that I found tend to flake bits of the white shell while I am handling them. What can I use to consolidate the specimens so that they don’t fall apart and so that the shell doesn’t flake off? Will the consolidants dampen the beautiful iridescence of the shells? Found in the Cretaceous Arcadia Park Formation from the TXI Quarry in Midlothian, Texas. It is Prionocyclus bosquensis according to Jim Kennedy, Professor Emeritus of Natural History at Oxford. What is this Cretaceous oyster that I found in Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas? Most oysters in the creek come from a yellowish calcite-cemented sandstone from the Arcadia Park Formation of the Eagle Ford Group. It is about 48mm in length.

Here are interior and exterior views of both valves of the Cretaceous oyster, Cameleolopha bellaplicata, collected in Post Oak Creek in Sherman, Texas, The specimen is more oval and elongated that most of the members of its species. The calcite valves with a trace of interior aragonite, mother of pearl, are covered in yellowish calcite cemented sandstone. The larger valve has the remnants of an attached ramose bryozoan that grew on the shell since the muddy Arcadia Park Formation did not provide a great hard ground to grow on. An unidentified domed colonial stone coral species also grow on the oysters in the area. The oysters are found in the upper part of the Arcadia Park Formation that contains a yellowish calcareous sandstone that is rich in small bivalves, shark teeth and other vertebrates. Similar mostly thin-bedded, yellowish and calcareous sandstones occur throughout north Texas and may be related to the thicker Bells Sandstone in eastern Grayson County. New Mexico Geology. 33: 67-95. Hook points out that Cameleolopha bellaplicata was "initially Ostrea, then Lopha, Alectryonia, and Nicaisolopha, and, now, Cameleolopha." Hook describes the oyster as follows: "Cameleolopha bellaplicata (Shumard 1860) is a medium-sized, plano-convex oyster with 8–27 generally simple plicae (ribs) that radiate from the beak. Secondary ornamentation consists of concentric lamellae that intersect the ribs. The general absence of attachment scars on preserved left valves indicates the species lived unattached as adults on the sea floor. Its left valve is larger and more convex than that of C. lugubris, giving it a more robust appearance and making it better suited to higher-energy, nearshore environments. The type specimens of C. bellaplicata came from the upper Eagle Ford Shale of Grayson County, Texas..." For additional information on the oyster see: Shumard, B. F., 1860. I found this fish yesterday in the Arcadia Park member of the Eagle Ford Group from the Upper Cretaceous of Dallas County Texas. I have not seen one of these before. I am hoping someone else has. The preservation on this one is very cool. I like the way it is laid out on the slab sort of like all those fish from Wyoming. Does anyone know what genus/species this fish might belong to? Your help is greatly appreciated!
