    Artifact?

Found in a waterway in Lincoln county Missouri.

    Artifact

From the album: North Sulphur River

You can also find worked stones from Native Americans at NSR. I'm not certain of the age. This is the first one I've found.
  3. Just experienced my first day trip to the NSR. Beautiful location for some laid-back collecting, and we did pretty well due to the recent rain. My dad found this interesting piece. It's definitely bone, and it seems to have several notches carved into it. On the right side there are 4 distinct notches. The left side appears to have a single notch, though less distinct. The front may have 3 notches, though they are the hardest to make out. I would guess the bone is partially fossilized- it feels dense, yet a fingernail can leave a scratch mark on the back with enough pressure. Any opinions as to whether this truly is an artifact? Any guesses to age? Makes you wonder what they were tallying up back then...
  4. I forgot to post my last North Sulphur River Texas hunt. I found a nice variety of items. The cretaceous fish piece was definitely my find of the day. I had a crop duster buzz me for at least an hour. I found some nice coprolite specimens and a cool reworked artifact.
  5. I spent a few hours each at the North Sulphur River Texas and Post Oak Creek Texas. I had a nice variety of cretaceous finds.

The North Sulphur River was picked over but I still managed to have some good finds.

    Northeast Texas Hunt!

Fun hunt yesterday. I found some huge broken sawfish teeth, shark teeth, enchodus jaw and teeth, mosasaur verts, big heart clam which I've never found in the Sulphur river area and a killer petrified wood Gary point. It got hot around 2PM so I got out early.
  8. That’s what I see but im not and expert(yet). Any info greatly appreciated thanks!
  9. Look like today was going to be one of the last mild temperature days with highs only in the low 90's, before things began to heat up again here in Northeast Texas, North Sulphur River area. Went out to an area I have visited in the past but found a creek that was new to me. I was surprised to find some rather impressive fossils right out in the open. One nice mosasaur vertebrae, fish vertebrae, jaw bone, large bone pieces that may be remains of larger worn vertebrae, and a couple of artifacts.
  10. Took advantage of the unusual cooler weather today to visit the North Sulphur River in northeast Texas. Several rain storms over the last few weeks have moved stuff around but the flow now is pretty slow. Walked the main channel a few hundred feet near the water with no luck, so decided to try the dryer areas hoping something has been missed by previous fossil hunters. Finally came across a few vertebrae pieces and then found an intact Mosasaur vert. However, the finds of the day were artifacts as I went down the river. The last one was the biggest and best one I have ever found on the NSR. The bad news is that it will be hard to top this day on future trips but this is not the first time I have said that!
  11. Especially inspired by this object: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/96343-stone-found-on-beach-in-wales/ but also many others posted in the ID section, I would like to discuss the possibility of construction of a flow chart for "object identification". But I don´t know, if this would make any sense or if it could be helpful. Both for the more experienced ID people or for the unexperienced ID people. It don´t need to be detailed, some "end points" I am thinking of are (of course, it can be deepened endlessly!): Artifact (modern, native American, etc.) Fossil (mollusc, tooth, Dino bone, mammal bone etc.) Rock (limestone, granite, schist etc. Concretion (siderite, pyrite, calcite etc...) Mineral (Calcite, Quartz, others etc.) It would be a long and extensive work. But my interest is more general: Is it even possible and does it make sense? Franz Bernhard
  12. Just for fun... Anyone tried to crack these so called "Native American Indian Game Stone Artifact with patina" open and check if there are fossil crabs inside?
  13. Believe it or not, it was 80 degrees for a high today in the North Texas area. This warm weather made we want to explore the NSR and a new creek that I had discovered on my last visit. There were several deep pools of water in the creek, so this warm weather would help in case I decided to take a swim (not on purpose) while hunting fossils and artifacts. I noticed on my last creek crawling adventure here, that once I hit the first deep pool, the persistent fossil hunting human tracks in front of me disappeared. I wore my waders and headed into the pool hoping for hard bottom and not mud. As I had hoped, on the other side of the pool, the only tracks I found were coyote and hogs. I begin to find small pieces of bone and a few vertebrae and artifacts that were mostly pieces and parts, but they had been worked on by someone. Several others pools of water were challenges but I only got a little water in my waders and at 80 degrees it did not feel too bad. Here are a few pics of the finds and sorry if you are still dealing with below zero weather were you are!

    North Sulphur River

I had a fun trip looking for shark teeth and artifacts yesterday at the North Sulphur River Texas. I found a large Enchodus tooth, nice shark tooth, mosasaur jaw section, other assorted fossils and some cool artifacts. Weather was perfect.
