I recently had the opportunity to do some butt scootin in the gravel banks along the Bear Creek washes looking for crabies and artifacts. Yeah, I found a couple of whathca-ma-call-em artifacts but there are fossils to be found as well. Croc scute, Ammonites Calycoceras Tarrentense & Metengonoceras Dumbli, Gastropod sp. ? Artifacts and my first shark tooth from that location. The other items are just some peculiar stones that strike me as take me home specimens. John, these were found directly below the area that I took you to. It was the same area I found that other crab you are interested in. BTW: I will be getting it back soon.

A muddy but fun NSR trip. I found a nice variety of fossils & artifacts. Some pretty good size baculites this time. @GeschWhat will probably appreciate the coprolite. It's full of bones under magnification.

Hello everyone, So I recently became serious about my collecting, but have had a few fossils for years now. I keep them in my room in an open bag (for now). My room is small and I usually have the door closed. I just learned some fossils could have uranium which could produce radon gas as it decays. Being someone who is paranoid about everything connected to the big 'C' word, I was wondering if my small collection poses any health risk. I have two fossilized shark teeth, two amber specimens, an alleged dinosaur bone fragment, a trilobite, an ammonite, a cephalopod, a mammoth tusk shard, a dino eggshell piece, and some non-fossil artifacts. It's a very small collection in a very small bag. But...being quite paranoid due to my father passing from cancer (he smoked A LOT) I became kind of scared and it actually made me want to stop collecting fossils altogether and just focus on artifacts. Anyone know anything about the safety of collecting?

Are there any brave souls who live in New York, or will be in New York Wednesday December 28th that would be interested in going on either a fossil and or Artifact hunt? Of course this is somewhat weather permitted. I will go even with snow on the ground as long as it is in inches and not feet. I will go if it is above 30 degrees. Sound crazy? Not really. I know of some spots that the snow doesn't seem to accumulate enough to hinder fossil hunting. And I'm bored and tired of looking at other people finds lol. If anyone's interested please let me know as I would like some company. We can discuss the different options, though I willsay I have been thinking about going to Spring creek in Alden New York for pyritized fossils, especially ammo's. Dave

I found this along the Loire River in central France. It was half-buried in the bank two weeks ago. There has been record heat in the area, and the river was running unusually low. I found a number of fossils, including tree branches and possibly bone. This piece looks to me like fossilized cloth. Input?

Why are we aloud to keep fossils but not artifacts?

I'm curious if anybody has located a pritable geologic map of Montague county Tx? So far I have not located one that I can print larger than a single sheet of notebook paper. The area is rather diverse, almost a jumble of geologic zones. I am starting to sort them out a little and a map would be of great help. My folks live there and I of course devote some time to picking up artifacts and fossils when I get the chance to do so. Next week the grand kids are out of school for spring break and we are going to spend a few days there. We hope to locate an area that is good for my kiddos to easily pick up a few fossils. We will be near the Wise-Montague border off of 287. Any known areas we could check in Montague county or nearby in Wise county? I would appreciate any input. Wfrr
