Hello all! Like my other finds, this was found in northeastern Nebraska in a creek that runs through both the valentine and ash hollow formations, which are Miocene, as well as some Pleistocene rock. I’m stumped on this one- some animals pieces I’ve found in the creek include bison, rhino, tortoise, horse…but the modern cow gets thrown in there a lot. This is fairly mineralized… anyone have any idea?

Hi I found this on the beach at lake mcconaughy in Nebraska which means it could be Pleistocene or Miocene but most likely from the Ash Hollow formation. I’m pretty clueless when it comes to bones and could use some help figuring out what this is. Thanks! P.s. I did the flame test and it’s fully mineralized.

Got this jacket into my prep lab yesterday night, and couldn't stop myself from starting in on it today. The specimen is likely a Gomphothere scapula, with most of the articulating end intact. The matrix is a very poorly cemented sandstone, when exposed to surface conditions it becomes essentially loose sand but a few inches deep it gets decently solid. Most of the prep I did today was just using a dull small chisel to push away the matrix

We got back out to the scapula jacket yesterday! The jacket we put on during a lull in the blizzard held exceptionally well. Fair weather for a change this time, the rancher had been joking about inviting us over whenever his land needed some rain (every time we've shown up before we've been rained our snowed out). We took our sweet time undercutting the jacket just to be on the safe side, then got it flipped and in the car in about an hour and a half of work.

Finally got a chance to take a break from school check out some land I got permission to collect on back in December. The site was pretty well documented in the Caprock member of the Ash Hollow formation, basically on the contact with the Valentine formation, and was known to produce Gomphothere. We made it out there and had found some bone within a few minutes of digging!
