  1. Hello! I asked this question in the Facebook group so I apologize if any of you are seeing it for a second time, but it was buried in a comment chain so I’m hoping to get a few more expert eyes on it. I received this beautifully prepared Keichousaurus today and it’s truly awesome to see it in person, but now that I’m able to inspect it more closely I’m thinking it may be a composite. There are a few things making me lean that direction: 1) There is an obvious mismatch in the patterns on the matrix, both front and back, when comparing the chunk that the body is on to the chunk that the skull is on. For example, the partial fish fossil on the righthand side just abruptly stops at the seam (last photo, blue arrow) … but it’s maybe possible that this is due to variable flaking/weathering and reattachment 2) The head is dorsal while the body is ventral … but I know it’s possible for this to happen naturally if the neck is twisted 3) The white “veins” that appear to run across both plates (skull and body) are, I think, true calcite veins in one plate and scratches intentionally placed to match on the other. For example, the red arrow in the last photo points to a junction where a true calcite vein from the body plate should cross the skull, but no vein is visible in the skull. A “vein” reappears above the skull but I believe this is just a surface scratch. On the other hand, the skull is perfectly sized and aligned to the “horns” (retroarticular processes) present on the body plate. This seems incredibly difficult to achieve in a fossil of this size. This specimen was prepared in the US and I have no reason to believe the skull is fake, but the uniform spacing and shape of the teeth also looks off to me. That may just be due to incomplete preparation of the area, I can’t tell even under 10x magnification. In any case it’s beautiful to look at, I was just a little disappointed to see that it may be a composite. What are your thoughts?
  2. Hi, I'm new to the site. Can you help me determine if this "Oviraptor Egg" is authentic? It was purchased from a popular auction site and received less than a month ago. It is claimed to have been purchased from a Japanese collection which originally purchased the egg from its original owner in Mongolia in the 1980's.
  3. Hello. I found these fossils for sale and thought they looked interesting. I am new in the hobby and this is my first time I am thinking of buying an eurypterus. I wanted some opinions before I proceed if they look alright and which of these two in your opinion seems nicer (I know it is personal the matter of opinion but I would love to read your opinions).
  4. I need some reassurance about some trilobites I want to buy. I believe in my rookie eyes that they look alright but as people told me before in this forum I want also some opinions before I proceed as I am new.
  5. Hello to anyone reading this. I want to know if anyone has been involved with AAPS and if anyone has purchased anything from their members. If a fossil dealer is a member of AAPS can I have confidence that they're selling genuine fossils? I would like opinions from anyone who knows more about this. Thank you.
  6. Hi there, Currently I'm in position to buy a keichousaurus. Unfortunately I'm not an expert and would like your opinion on the following: is it authentic and how good is the preparation that was done? I have a few photo's to share. Hopefully you can help me out. Many thanks in advance. Tim

    Megladon real or fake

Hi, my daughter is into gems, fossils crystal. So we have been getting into it too. A few years ago in Canada we came across an antique shop where we bought a Megladon tooth as the owner was a prospector by trade and said he had found it in North Carolina. No certification but looks cool. It is small weighs about 3.3 oz. I was wondering if anyone can tell if it is real or a fake? Thanks for your help!
  8. Ok a website I was looking at is selling what it claims to be pieces of Brachiosaurus Bone. I cannot post photos because I would incriminate the seller, but the piece looks genuine enough. What I want to know is the likelihood of it actually being Brachiosaurus. By my understanding their fossils are quite rare so even a small fragment of the genuine article would not be cheap, these ones are offered at 19 dollars. According to their information, their pieces comes from a Brachiosaurus femur from the Morrison Formation in Utah. The Morrison Formation is the right, and as I understand only, place to find such fossils if this was genuine but it's also a place were other sauropod fossils are found. They also include an image of some fossil bone that I assume the piece was taken from, but it's give no true scale to it or shape. It sounds a little to true good to me, but what do you all think based on the info they provide. I personally doubt it, but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask.
  9. Hi there. I am brand new to this hobby and have been making some purchases on online but I am concerned about authenticity. Here are some pics of fossils I am considering. Does anybody see any obvious issues? I know it is impossible to say for sure if they are genuine from a few pics but any pointers would be much appreciated!
  10. Hello to everyone! This is my first discussion on this forum. I have just started to collect dinosaur fossils and I wanted to learn from all of you. Specially to identify a real fossil from a fake one, if that is possible. I have found an interesting fossil that I would like to purchase if it is authentic, but I have several doubts. The fossil is an Iguanodon Jaw (see pictures attached) discovered in Isle of Wight, UK. The dealer says that this bone belonged to an iguanodon that would have lived approximately 120 million years ago. They also told me that the jaw has been restored from two fragments that had broken naturally; both these pieces are associated and from the same animal. What do you think. Any clue would be appreciate. Thank you so much!!
  11. Came across this one and wondered if it was fake or doctored. I have my suspicions - for one, the legs look disproportionate, but I wouldn't know. I wouldn't mind having one of these if it's real and the price is right. This is the only pic available... maybe not big enough to tell anything for sure? but I know some of you have a pretty good eye!
  12. Hi All Just another novice here looking for some thoughts on whether a Keichosaurus is real or fake or compounded. Any thoughts welcome.
  13. Hi All, I've purchased these two items and am wondering about authenticity. Can anyone provide any thoughts?
  14. Could experts share the primary indicators to check for regarding authenticity of a Mosasaurus jaw specimen? - specifically root / tooth junctures. I’m aware of the sophistication of fakes in the market. Below is a recent purchase - I’d like feedback on details to look for in verifying authenticity. Thank you!
  15. Are these replica or genuine fossil? They look like the same.
  16. I was given this around Christmas. It had a gray "dusty" coating. Upon cleaning/prepping it now looks like this. Here's what makes me question it's authenticity...notice the gray matter down the middle and at the tip. Your thoughts?
  17. Hello guys, hope everybody is fine. today some doubts about the authenticity of some specimens here. At the same time, help on the correct ID of them will be apreciated. In your opinion, is this a composite or just a bad preparation? Thanks in advance, Miguel Pais
  18. Hello, i´m interested in this Nothosaurus Skeleton. But i´m not 100% sure about the authenticity. The dealer has send me photos befor the prep. I hope you can help me. Thank You, Michael
  19. Hello, I recently purchased this Canadian ammolite pendant on eBay, and I'm questioning its authenticity? It looks dark at certain angles. It only looks resplendent when exposed to a significant amount of light. thanks
  20. Could someone help me classify these stones?

    Fossilized Egg ?

I found this on a golf course in MA. It is so symmetrical and resembles other seemingly legitimate eggs here. The continuity of the surface and lack of "inclusions" make it hard for me to think it's a rock. Any thoughts ? I can send better pictures to those who may care..... Thanks. -Bill
  22. Greetings Fossil enthusiasts- My sister brought me a wonderful gift when she got home yesterday. It will always keep its sentimental value to me, but I'm curious if this fossil is real or fake? I've been looking up and down all over the internet and I have no clear cut answer so I'm hoping one of you can help me. I have a hunch it is a fake of some sort- but it's still neat nonetheless. I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you, and have a wonderful day friends. Pictured is the specimen flipped to show both sides.
  23. I've recently bought this fossil from a seller on Instagram and these are the seller's pictures, but after some recent digging, I was introduced to the reality of counterfeit and fake ones. Does this one look real or fake? The seller doesn't have location of discovery and I've been trying to google how to learn whether it's real or fake but I haven't gotten far. Thanks for your time!!

    Gastornis eggshell ID

Hello! I bought Gastornis eggshell with certificate. I am novice so I would like to ask you if I can be certain that it is authentic Gastornis eggshell? I am asking because maybe everyone can create similar certificate and selling fake fossils. I do no know. Can you help me?
  25. Hello everyone, I am a total novice, interested in buying a spinosaurus tooth to start my collection. I have been trying to do my research into reputable online dealers. Generally I have found that a few well-known sites are recommended (paleogallery, arizona skies, indiana9fossils, etc). Recently I stumbled across a site called Fossils Meteorites and More. They also are listed under the same name as sellers on ebay. Their prices seem reasonable but I hesitate to buy without have heard anything about them. Does anyone here know of this dealer? Appreciate the help!
