  1. Hello! I found this piece in Portsmouth RI this weekend on a shale beach (picture attached). I'm just not sure what the shale is attached to--- it *looks* like a piece of bone, but I've been doing some image searches and cant find anything really similar. Sorry for my hand in one- I couldn't get a clear shot of the edge otherwise. Thanks so much in advance - I appreciate any insights into what this might be! Emily

    found on a beach

Hi all--I'm new here and this is my first post. I'm here because I am interested in identifying something I found, but I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy hanging out here. I found this on a beach in North Carolina while shark tooth hunting. This is from "the point" at the west end of the Bogue Banks at the Bogue Inlet, in the town of Emerald Isle. I've scoured the internet for matching photos and I can't figure out what it might be...the closest I've gotten is some kind of duck-billed dinosaur tooth. But I'm sure that's wrong. It doesn't look like anything I've found before. I appreciate any insight folks can provide! IMG_9749.HEIC IMG_9751.HEIC

Is this beach find a fossil?

Hi all - I just discovered this today on the beach and have no idea if it’s a fossil or a useless piece of garbage lol. Found sitting in the sand, nestled among rocks on Youghall Beach in Bathurst, New Brunswick (Canada). About 10 feet from the water line, but near the high tide mark.. so would have washed up there with the tides. There is a bit of crusty sand still on the front - I’m worried to try and scrape it off. Just curious if this is ‘something’ or should be tossed out. Any ideas are appreciated!

    Help ID a sea creature

I found this on Ocean Beach in SF. It looks like an echidnoid to my uneducated eyes, but there may also be something else. Any help appreciated-thanks.
  5. Hi ! So I've found on the beach in french Brittany thousands of those stones (fossiles ? Thingies ?). I started to search the internet to ID them and I stumbled across this website via this post : So basically they look a lot like wormcast you typically see on a beach but they are solid and look like limestone. I don't know much about fossils so I can't really tell but they definitely feel like limestone and other fossiles I've found before. Another information that might help with ID is that basically I found them amongst litterally thousands of those but there was no other place were I could find such things anywhere else on the beach. They were in a place with a lot of other seashells, covering an area of maybe 2m² . I find all of this very intriguing. Do any of you have an idea of what it is ? Have a good day

    Megalodon tooth?

So, hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico removed a lot of the sand from the beaches by pulling it back into the ocean unearthing artifacts and other objects. On my trip I found a lot of these in one specific area of the beach while a was walking where the water touches your feet and the sand is wet. This one was the biggest I found (3.5” tall and 3 1/4” wide), and the others were about 1.5” tall. I only took this one. They all looked the same/similar and that caught my attention. Thicker on one side and thinner on the other half. So, were they all megalodon teeth? The surface looks like a rock with sand encrusted in it. If it is, My guess is because it was buried in deep sand and got like these instead of the nice black ones a see online? Don’t know. Let me know what y’all think

ID plant fossil found on beach

First time poster. Found these on a Canadian Beach on the east coast and they all seem to be from the same plant. They all have a very distinct triangular ridge on the side. Included photo is from the pieces with the best defined ridge.

    Hawaii Modern Bone Beach Find

Bone is 6 inches across and was found on a beach in Hawaii.

    Tooth, teeth, or something else?

Edit: sorry somehow the images got out of order. Just to make it more challenging, I guess. These are some other items I have found looking for shark teeth near Venice Florida, in the surf. I'm not sure if the first four are similar or not. All conical, and show worn or broken off layers. One is slightly corkscrews, and one has a bump on one side. The second batch are all similar, with ridges around a cusp, and a smaller end. The last looks like a human incisor, though I would guess it is from a deer or something similar. I found a couple pieces of fossilized antler in the same area. Any help with identification is greatly appreciated.

    Fossil tooth - bovine, horse?

We found this today at the beach near Venice, Italy (Adriatic Coast). So far we've determined it is a tooth from either a cow or an equine species. We burned it with a lighter - it does smell burnt, so probably not fossilized. Does anybody know the species?
  11. I thought this looked like a tooth crown, but there is nothing but the crown if that is what it is. Might well be something else. Found on a beach near Fort Pierce. About 3/4 inches square. Not so high. Thanks for your help.
  12. Hello, this was found along the beach in Maui, Hawaii and my boyfriend and I are curious if anyone might know what it could be? =) It has distinct ridges all along. Maybe a crab claw fossil? Thanks for your help!

    Fossil Tooth From Florida Beach.

Found this tooth on a beach near Fort Pierce Florida. It is almost exactly one inch long across the crown and 3/8 inch wide. The width is very irregular as you can see. Thanks for your help.
  14. Hello! So I found these three fossils and was curious to know about them... one i think is to be a bryozoan branch the tooth i believe to be a cow tooth not sure how old it may be and the last one is a type of small brachiopod its super tiny but again I don't know much about fossils yet but I am ready to learn more ! So if any one knows anything about these fossils that'd be a great help! First 6 pictures are from the riverbed and the last two are from the beach in Lübeck,Germany Thanks!
  15. I found this fossil at Caspersen Beach Florida, while snorkeling please help me identify it, ill go crazy if i don't find out what it is.

    Fossil on Barrassy beach

I found this fossil on Barrassy beach in Ayrshire Scotland. It looks like a shell on the outside with a mesh of white and grey rock inside. I haven't seen any other shell fossils that look like this though. It's partially burnt on the top, I found it next to a fire pit so it has probably been scorched recently. What do you think this is and how old do you think it is?

    Skull from the beach?

I found this on the beach in Englewood Florida. I have 2 of them but this one is a bit bigger.
  18. Found this fossil on the beach, any idea what it could be?

Sharks teeth ID from Oak Island, NC

I recently found these beginning on June 2021 on the beach at Oak Island, NC. Curious as to what exactly a couple of these teeth actually are. I have some suspicions but I defer to the resident experts. Thank you! The two isolated on the first two pictures and the bottom 5 from left to right on the 3rd row (Mako??)

Found on a beach, English east coast

Good day all, hope everyone is well and having a great day. To start, I have absolutely no clue about anything fossil related. I was just curious as to what this was, there isn’t anything big and scary in England with teeth this large so it’s just strange to me, it’s probably nothing so I am sorry if it’s obvious. It was found on a beach that fossil hunters say is fairly notorious for just sharks teeth but even I know this isn’t from a shark. Thank you for any help

    Beach find, fossil?

Hi, I work at the nature centre on the Isle of Islay. We had a school visit today and a little girl brought in the rock/fossil pictured. She found it on a pebble beach near Bowmore on the Isle of Islay. I had a quick look at our fossil books and couldn't identify it. Apologies for lack of scale, is about 10cm long. Any help much appreciated. Thanks

    Muliple IDs from Cape May

Heya~! I recently returned from a trip to Cape May, NJ and spent most of my trip on Sunset and Higbee beach picking through the rocks and shells looking for cool stuff. I really want to get into rock hounding/fossil collecting, but I didn't really know what I was looking at so I just grabbed a bunch of stuff that I thought looked neat or interesting. I'm really happy with my haul but I was wondering if any of you nice folks could tell me if I have anything of particular interest? This photo has two that I'm sure are coral fossils, but I don't know what species. The other things looked interesting but I'm not familiar enough with types of rocks to know if any of them are something special or just a cool looking weather worn rock: In this photo, I have some that I thought may be fossils, or that at least had interesting patterns on them: In particular I thought these 3 seemed interesting: Lastly, a few with cool patterns on them. I don't think any of these are fossils but I was wondering if some of these may be petrified wood or something else interesting? Bonus! Rocks, shells, and sea glass that I just thought looked neat! I don't necessarily need an ID on these unless you see something of interest; just wanted to share~! I'm not expecting anything to be mind blowing but if anyone is able to help me identify some of these, or point me towards resources I could use to do it myself, I'd really appreciate it! Like I said I'm very new to all of this so I'm not totally sure what I'm looking at. Really, any help at all is SUPER appreciated. Thanks in advance! PS: I can definitely take more angles of some if you need! I had so many that I didn't want to take pictures of all of them.

    Random Beach finds

I just finished going through some fossils I'd found on the beach here in eastern North Carolina, and I don't know what any of these are. If y'all had any idea, would you please let me know? Thank you! The last picture is of a couple of my favorite finds I have found; a tapir tooth and what I believe to be mouthparts of a porcupine fish.
  24. Hi everyone, Found these two on Milnerton beach, Cape Town. I’m hazarding a guess that it’s cetacea, possibly flipper phalange? I did find a paper on pliocene cetacea found about 10km further up the coast (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/331004600_Fossil_cetaceans_from_Duinefontein_Koeberg_an_early_Pliocene_site_on_the_southwestern_Cape_South_Africa). Tried to contact the author but no answer yet. I don’t know much about fossils so anything you can tell me about these would be greatly appreciated!
