Last Saturday our geology club “Lithos” planned a trip to the “Musée de l’iguanodon” in Bernissart. https://bernissart.be/index.php/tourisme/musees/musee-de-l-iguanodon Apart from the usual exposition there was also a temporary display of the geology of the “Hainaut” that was made by the local geology club of Bernissart ( C.G.H. ) As a bonus we also had the opportunity to visit the club rooms and collections of the C.G.H. in the buildings next to the museum. Their collections included lots of regional fossils, minerals from all over the world an minerals from Belgium. The expo from CGH: Fossils from the former coal mines: Some of the museum displays: The real deal a genuine specimen from the famous site of Bernissart: some of the display cases in the club rooms from the CGH:

Land near Bernissart: Chances of finding anything?
IguanodonGhost posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Let me start by saying I don't know the first thing about fossils and the like, so I admit this question is probably a bit silly, but humour me please. I recently inherited some land near the Bernissart coal mine. (For those who don't know it, that spot is famous due to the discovery of over 40 Iguanodon skeletons in 1878 at a depth of 332m.) The land itself is situated less than 5 km away from the mine (as the crow flies) and is about 12-13 square km. The terrain isn't really worth much since it's classified/protected forest (not sure what the proper term is in English). I have to make a decision whether I want to keep it or sell it, so the litlle kid in me was wondering what the chances would be of finding dinosaur fossils there? And I mean a major discovery, not just a small tooth or so. I obviously realise that digging 300 meters deep isn't very feasible (and possibly not allowed due to the status of the land anyway). But would there be any reason to keep it? Is there any easy way to know if the land holds any secrets deep down? (Ground-penetrating radar or things like that?) Cheers- 9 replies

The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (Brussels): A tour by Ziggycardon
ziggycardon posted a topic in A Trip to the Museum
Hi everyone Last Thursday I went to visit the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels as a little pre-birthday trip. I have visited this museum several times in the past few years, but this time I took my camera with me and thought it might be fun to do a photo tour of the museum for this forum Beware, this will be quite a big topic that might take a few days to complete as I took nearly 750 photo's in the museum (a lot will have to be sorted out though due to blurry quality, photo's of only name tags and doubles) as I wanted to show pretty much all fossil displays Especially the Hall of the Dinosaurs, the hall of the Mosasaurs & The Hall of Evolution will be quite complete tours Starting off with some snapshots of the hall of the minerals. ziggycardon posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hi everyone, I was just scrolling facebook a few moments ago and came across a few posts by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and saw that there is a new documentary series about the museum itself on Canvas, the series is called "Er was eens" and the first episode that will air today at 19u will be all about the fossil collection including the Iguanodons of Bernissart & Plateosaurus Ben. So maybe a tip for everyone that has the network "Canvas" in Belgium & the Netherlands. https://vimeo.com/297901181?fbclid=IwAR2F5eIbYwzRKCAtfwcYIG8EZsXwZZF2nUhtUPw3dIYAQem_YrSLLP-t3TQ And the museum also posted that the science magazine EOS will do a 82 pages big special on the iguanodons of Bernissart, maybe another tip for all the belgian & dutch member, I'll definiatly get myself a copy!- 1 reply
