Big Brook : Root, Rock or Mosasaur?

Big Brook - New Jersey: Marlboro. Is this a root, rock or mosasaur? Edges where you would expect it. Forgive the dirty nails came from the brook.
  4. Hello, and thank you for your help and interest. I have collected from Big Brook in the past, but this time I was finding items of similar composition in the same general area of the stream bed. There had been recent heavy rainfall and the stream bed seemed layered differently. I have been tricked before, and could be getting tricked again, because after a while I trick myself into thinking everything is a fossil. After reading "When Dinosaurs Roamed New Jersey," I went back to Monmouth County with a renewed excitement. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated if any of these specimens could be fossils. I placed the numbers under the specimens, and a standard ruler at the bottom, hoping that could assist. I changed the angles of the specimens. Thank you for your time and have a nice day! Bill

    Big Brook - Fossil Id

Big Brook, no cutting edge, worn. Different then rocks or concretions in the area.
  8. I ventured to the NJ brooks last weekend and made it to both Big Brook and Ramanessin Brook (Cretaceous, mix of Navesink and Mt. Laurel formations I believe). I found a few goblin and crow shark teeth, but need some help with ID for a few other finds. Thanks in advance for any help! Here are some detailed images of each. #1: concretion, or tooth? #2, definitely looks like a vertebra, but for a fish or shark? #3 also looks like a vert, or is it another concretion? #4: I found a few like this, but can't tell if it's just a weird concretion or some kind of plate or scute? #5 Looks like something in matrix #6 looks like some kind of small reptile tooth to me. It's a little hard to tell, but it does have a worn enamel appearance and some worn ridges on two sides. #7 of course is a pretty large shark tooth, but it's a bit worn and hard to tell from what genus/species. Looks a little like a goblin, but the base near the root is so wide. #8 might just be a concretion, but it did have a terestrial animal tooth appearance to it #9 looks like a tooth, but I can't place whether it's a fish or reptile? #10 looks like part of a vertebra? #11 looks like part of a plate or reptile shell? And last #12, pycnodont? bone?

    Big brook toe bone?

Just dug from Big Brook. Think it's definitely a bone...but is it modern or fossil?
  12. Hi all! New member and very novice fossil enthusiast here. My family and I just got into fossil hunting this year and I wanted to ask for help identifying some of our finds. We've been exploring the formation in Big Brook New Jersey for a while now, and we've found plenty of shells, shark teeth, and belemnite that are easier to identify. We've also found our fair share of tricky concretions and other fake-out fossils in the brooks. I'm still learning what to look for and how to tell the difference between bone and rock, but I've made some good progress! Anyway, I wanted to ask about some of the trickier pieces in our little collection so far. I have a guess or two for some of them after poking around google, but mostly I'm stumped. Part of me is just looking for confirmation if they are anything at all, even if a specific ID isn't possible. I would absolutely love to hear any opinions or advice about them and what traits to look out for in the future! (will post some close-ups in the replies) 1 & 2: They don't seem like teeth really, but they've got some interesting patterns and a pair of pronounced seams(?) 3: I'm 99% sure its fossilized bone, but might be too small of a fragment to tell what kind 4: The shape makes me curious, but could easily just be rock 5: I'm getting turtle vibes? No idea 6: The texture and shine make me think maybe Coprolite? 7: Much like 4, the shape is curious, but might be nothing. The texture is less rock-like than 4's, though 8. Sort of claw shaped? Maybe just rock 9. The hole pattern seems similar to some turtle or crocodile scute I've seen others come across 10 & 11: Skeptical, but not confident enough to rule them out 12: I've found a few concretions that have very similar inner/outer sections like this, but some of the patterns on the outside of this one make me uncertain if it's just rock I'll follow up with some more close-ups, but thanks for any and all help anyone has to give Some close-ups of 1, 2 & 3 The 'seams' on 1 & 2 have me stumped 3 is probably too small to tell much about, but it's the first piece I've found (aside from shark teeth) that I've been pretty certain is bone and not rock

Big Brook NJ Possible Fossil ID

Hi, I went looking for fossils at Big Brook park recently and found this. I'm unsure of what it is? To me it definitely looks like a fossil maybe a sawfish tooth but I'm unsure. It doesn't really match anything I've seen on any sites.
  14. Hi all, hoping I found something with these 3 pieces but thinking prob one or more are those tricky concretions I'm not too experienced with yet. Thanks for any help in advance!!!

    Rock or Fossil?

I found the item pictured a couple of weeks ago in Big Brook in Colts Neck, NJ. I have seen photos of Pychodontid fish teeth online and am wondering if this could possibly be one, or if it is just a rock with a similar shape. Hoping an expert can let me know.

    Plant or shell?

I found the fossil below last week in Big Brook in Colts Neck, NJ. I know it is not terribly impressive, but I am curious to know exactly what it is. The imprint is VERY tiny. I assume it is of a shell, but could perhaps also be a fan shaped small plant? Can anyone tell me exactly what kind, or more about it?

Big Brook Tooth and fossil ID

Hi I recently went looking for foss il at Big Brook Park, New Jersey. I'm wondering what species the shark tooth is from and what the other tooth/fossil is from. I'm not entirely sure what it is?
  23. Found this mineralized bone at Big Brook Nj and on researching it, it looks very similar to photos of both Plesiosaur and Mosasaur vertebrae. About 1-3/4" long. Any help greatly appreciated!

    Big Brook, NJ - Bones

Beyond the shark teeth I acquired these two bones from a recent trip looking for fossils in Big Brook, NJ. Not sure how to differentiate if this is recent or from the Late Cretaceous associated with the others fossils found in the brook.
  25. Hello everyone and thanks ahead of time for any help you can give me. I've researched this fossil I found in Big Brook NJ extensively and cannot find anything listed like it or close to anything I've seen anyone find. It's about 3/4" and completely cone shaped. Not flat on any side. The lines do not appear to spiral. Any help greatly appreciated!!
