Hi Everyone, New to the forum here but thought you guys might be able to help me ID some finds from today. Was out today for a few hours with my daughter and we found 2 items that I think might be Dino material but maybe not. I was thinking maybe a hadrosaurus tooth and a long shot on a worn dryptosaurus claw. The claw is interesting because it is definitely not coprolite as it’s rock and not sandy.

Hi everyone, I was at the Big Brook Preserve lately, and in amongst the usual batch of oysters, shark teeth, belemnites, and an ammonite fragment I found one piece which I can't quite identify. I initially thought it was a piece of Enchodus jaw, but when I got it into better light I wasn't so sure. It seems to have definite bone texture to it and I am almost certain it's fossilized, but it doesn't quite match with anything I can think of. (Sorry if the pictures aren't great, I tried the best I could with my desk lamp.) Thanks!

Hi everyone! I found these at the Big Brook Preserve in Colts Neck, NJ in May of 2020. This was my first fossil hunt so I'm pretty sure I was at the wrong exact location but I was nearby. I found them directly in the creek and had to use a sifter. This was also after a rainstorm. I'm not sure if anything here is a fossil, but I figured I'd ask the experts! Please let me know if you want closer pictures or other angles of any of them. Thanks for taking a look! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Found this today out at the brooks, stumped on what it could be - never seen this kind of patterning on anything from the brooks before. Perhaps some sort of armor plate?

I’ve had Big Brook and Ramanessin on my shark tooth hunting list for a while and finally made it up to both today. It’s a 6-hour roundtrip drive from where I live and with the days still pretty short this time of year, I had originally planned to spend my limited time just at Big Brook. After an hour-and-a-half of mostly striking out on shark teeth there, however, I decided to head over to Ramanessin, which both @Bob-ay and @PaleoNoel had recommended. Luckily, the two spots are only about 10 minutes apart, so I didn’t waste much time in transit, and I was rewarded with much better gravels at Ramanessin than I’d found at Big Brook. Some pictures of my trip and finds are below. While I’d hoped to find more intact shark teeth in the Cretaceous streams today (nearly all that I found were partials), all-in-all, I had an enjoyable trip and found a decent variety of things for my first time in the area. I look forward to returning! I parked at and entered Big Brook via Hillsdale Road. Unfortunately, there weren't a ton of exposed gravels there today (I was walking in the direction of Boundary Road, though I stopped about 2/3 of the way there). My first fossil find of the day: Belemnitella americana. These are pretty common and I had a couple from Big Brook already via a trade with @butchndad but this was my first belemnite find ever! I found this Enchodus petrosus fang on one of the first decent gravel bars. It measures 36 mm long and turned out to be my find of the day. This was the only (mostly) compete shark tooth (it's missing the very tip) that I found in my hour and a half at Big Brook. I believe it's a small Cretalamna appendiculata. I only found two other fragments of shark teeth in the time I was there. Photos from Ramanessin coming up...

Ramanessin or Big Brook for First NJ Cretaceous Hunt?
bthemoose posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I’m thinking about heading up to NJ tomorrow for my first Cretaceous hunt, and would love any advice from more experienced members, both generally and for this time of year (other than dressing for the cold of course). I was thinking Ramanessin as I’ve read here that it’s better for shark teeth, but I’m open to Big Brook as well if you think it’s better for a first trip. Along the Calvert Cliffs I mostly surface collect—is that also an effective strategy at Ramanessin and/or Big Brook, or is sifting likely to produce better results? Any advice on where to enter/park would also be helpful. If I do go to Ramanessin, I’ve read that there’s limited parking on Holmdel-Middletown Road across from the elementary school (I’m assuming parking at the school itself will be a no-go since it’s a school day, though I’m not sure if they’re doing in-person classes). Thanks in advance for your thoughts!- 3 replies

Beautiful day (60 degrees) but the brook was still too cold for my feet. I think I found my best Enchodus Petrosus tooth and jaw by far 1.75 inches by 1.4 inches. 2 carinae. Hoping for confirmation from you folks. Thank you

My 29th trip to Big Brook may well have been my best yet. Instead of my two usual entry points I entered by an unnamed tributary I found on a map. It was small and narrow and overgrown and clearly not the “road” most traveled. Probably the least shark teeth I’ve ever found: photo of 5 below. Picked up several broken bottle bottoms with writing which I get a kick out of including an unbroken Vicks Vaporub! I found a bunch of bone most of which I probably deer but the dark wide one is likely not. Below is a photo of what I think is the first bear footprint I’ve ever seen there. Probably wrong but it had me looking around! Photo of what Of what I thought were an Enchodus jaw and two teeth and a large crab claw but am waiting for help on the ID where I’m being told maybe something’s even better. Picked up a whole bunch of “maybes” which I need to take a closer look at. And finally I got to cross one off my BUCKETLIST!!!! My first arrowhead (have also been told it could be a knife but either way yeah). May well be my last trip for months because my feet despite 3 pairs of socks plus waders were still painfully cold. But if so it will have been a great way to close out my first year of fossil hunting and I am absolutely hooked.

My 29th trip to Big Brook and I decided to try to get there by an unnamed tributary I found on a map. Got to explore an area with little evidence of usage as shown by the paucity of glass and plastic. Overgrown and thorny and I think I saw my first bear footprint (photo below). Posted below are photos of what I think is an Enchodus jaw and two teeth and also what I think is a partial crab claw but much bigger than any I’ve found before. I also think I found my first arrowhead. Any info greatly appreciated.

Is this a lateral anomoeodus tooth? I have found a number of the medial teeth likely because the shape is more distinct but this would be my first lateral tooth. 3/8 inches. Thank you

Today was my 27th trip to Big Brook. Cold to start but not as cold as last week when I had to give up and leave. Park rules only allow you to keep 6 “artifacts”. So here is what I found. Which 6 would you suggest i keep? And why? Thank you all

I found this 1.5 inch triangular piece of bone in Big Brook. I guess it to be too small to be identified by species. But I am hoping someone can give me some information. One flat side shows bone whereas the other almost has a stone finish. Most striking to my eye is In the 3rd photo (side view) the bone becomes much denser and darker as it gets closer to the flat stone-like outside? surface from photo 2. Any insights greatly appreciated. Thank you

I recently found this at Big Brook in NJ, USA. I am not sure what this is. The outer layer appears to have a spiral formation towards one end. It's just about 1 inch long (maybe a little less). Thanks for any help!

My 26th trip to Big Brook and i had big plans. Previously i had found 2 Mososaur teeth, both in my first 8 trips and both in the same small area. I had returned to that spot before today but without success; no mos and very little of anything else. Today i was going back there determined to find my 3rd (and perhaps 4th). My wife had a hair appointment so i would have 2 additional hours in the water. I was psyched! Success was visualized and i was ready to make it a reality. BUT Mother Nature and the Fossil Gods had other ideas. It was below freezing and my body couldn't keep up with my imagination. After about an hour and a half of freezing and not even being able to pick through my pan, i retreated to my car intending to blast the heat, warm up and go back in. Fumbling to get my waders off and keys out, i finally made it into the car. My hands hurt so much i had face reality and admit this was not to be my day. With my tail tucked between my legs i gave up and headed home. Halloween indeed and the trick was on me. ..... but next week!

Can anyone try to indenting what I think is a jaw fragment with teeth, the large one being broken. Approximately 1/2 by 3/8 inches. I presume it to me modern. Thank you as always
-
For the rank amateurs here is it possible to explain the differences and how to identify these teeth? Of lesser importance I am attaching photos of 3 inch to inch and a half teeth I had previously thought were all Enchodus and then 2 small half inch fragments found yesterday, both heavily striated. As always thank you all

My boys and I went fossil hunting in Big Brook New Jersey and can’t identify this one we found. It looks like a worm inside a Belemnite fragment but was told Belemnite fragments are hollow.

Like all of us I pick up a lot of maybes/I don’t knows. I took this one home for a better look. With the loupe I think I see something and crab is my best guess. The whole piece is 1.5 inches. I don’t want to believe this is geologic. Your help greatly appreciated.

Good evening. Another morning spent in Big Brook. Did ok with the shark teeth. 3 questions: 1) 15/16th inches I think is a sawfish rostal. 2). 3/8 inch piece of jawbone with 2 teeth which I think is fossil fish but have no idea which, and 3) a 1 1/8 inch piece of bone I guess to be modern. Can you identify the animal? Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I’ve had this little find for a few weeks now. It’s about 2cm long. Was thinking some kind of fish tooth, or possibly even plesiosaur. You can see the pronounced striations in the pics. Definitely river worn, though. Thanks in advance!

Hey I found this while sifting and was not sure if it was a vert but i took it home and cleaned it up with a small electric engraver and dental pick and here it is. It looks like a vert but from what? biggest one I have found! Thanks!

A little rain on the drive down didn’t discourage me after not being able to go last week with the Grateful Dead blasting I made it there in 45 minutes. I tried yet two more new places to access the Brook but neither seemed promising so back to my standby entrance. 5 hours in the Brook and I only saw one person, Gabriel who was the one who inspired me to truck out the glass, metal and plastic I came across. I intended to do a little exploring but wound up in an old familiar spot for the whole time (will roam next time). More quantity than quality with the Crows leading the way as usual with Sand Tiger, Goblin and Mackerel as well as Brachyrhizodus, Pycnodont, Enchodus, Belemnite, Agerostera and some that’s likely a rock but I posted for ID. The only bummer was thinking about the impending winter

Sounds better than geologic or vertebrate. The shape is obviously what caught my attention but the surface texture looked like rock so I was about to toss it when the bottom made me think twice. Still think rock but wanted your opinions. 1/2 inch long. Thanks and apologies for the finger nails.

Hello, went fossil hunting at Big Brook, New Jersey. I made this find and I'm not totally sure what it is. I've found shark teeth here before but this was larger and shaped differently. If anyone knows what animal this tooth belongs to it would be much appreciated.
