I am clueless as to what this is (more so than usual). It doesn’t look like the usual concretions. It doesn’t look like the usual shells. It doesn’t look like a fossil and I’ve never seen coral from Big Brook. It’s 1.75 x 1 inch and the bottom is concave

After 20 trips to Big Brook I have several hundred shark teeth (but can you really ever have enough?). I’ve got a fair number of belemnite and oysters. Enchodus, Ratfish, Sawfish, Cow-nosed rays and more. Lately I’ve been into finding modern bone and old bottles but I only have 2 Mosasaur teeth and I was determined to find more today. For the first time in a long while I returned to the spot where I found them. Diligently digging and panning for hours but the shark (and amphibious reptile gods) were against me and it was not to be. No MOs, no shark, no nothing! still a great day in the brook and with a new phone I was finally able to take some photos and share Big Brook with you

Good morning another good day in The Brook. My best find which I was able to identify was an iPhone 11 which I reunited with it’s owner. Photos below are of a humerus. Most of what I find is deer but this one is substantially smaller. Is it a juvenile deer or something else? As always, thank you for sharing your expertise

Yesterday I took my boys down to Marlboro for our first trip to Big Brook Preserve. Overcast and humid seemed better to me then humid and full sun. We only came with a metal strainer and a few old spoons. I wasn't really sure how to start or what to look for but we had a great time...the boys splashing in the water more then looking for fossils! I found a few teeth, many concretions and I'm unsure of my other finds. I can't wait to go back! Would love any suggestions or possible id's on any of my finds!

When I saw it in the screen, I honestly thought it was just an acorn or something, but I did the sound check and sure enough, it's got that bone bell sound. Not really sure about this one, any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Location: Big Brook in NJ Date Found: August 2020

Pressing my luck but is anyone able to tell me anything about this big brook bone fragment. Perhaps just whether mammal or reptile or other. And I know my photos don’t make this any easier but an iPhone 5 is all I have. As always, thank you for sharing your knowledge

Picture this; he enters the brook at 7am. The sky is dark and thunderstorms are forecast. The canopy of trees darkens the stream. The water is dark and murky. something catches his eye. He pulls it out of the water and it’s dark and smooth and that shape. It cant be could it? that horn! A Steg? A Trice? for one brief moment time slows and stops and he stares in awe ah pareidolia

hello all sorry no photos yesterday was my 19th trip to Big Brook and i decided to brave the elements despite the forecast (actually i look at 2 weather sites and their forecasts were completely different) No lightning and only 45 minutes of rain i have been looking at alternative ways to access Big Brook beyond just the Preserve. Yesterday i hit the Kovalski Tributary and a couple of even smaller streams feeding that. The highlight of my search was my first coprolite. A few shark teeth, crab claws, a fragmocone, and a bone fragment but definitely not good pickings compared to Big Brook within the Preserve. What i found the most of was garbage; metal, plastic and mostly glass and i must have carried out 10-15 pounds. But, bottom line, any day there is a good day. 7am til 12 noon and did not see or hear a single person. Perfect Covid activity. 45 minute drive each way, just me and the Grateful Dead. Just costs gas & tolls . And i get to forget politics or work or any other distractions and be "totally in the moment". Already looking forward to next saturday's trip and daydreaming about the great stuff i will find

Good morning all ive never found coprolite as far as I know. I’m wondering if either of these two are. If so, of what and if not, what are they? Note the hair or fiber of some sort in the lighter colored one. As always, thank you for sharing your knowledge

My daughter and I found these two “teeth” at Big Brook Park yesterday along with a bunch of cool shark teeth. It was our first time ever searching and we had a blast. Would love to know what these are? Thanks! Mark

Hey guys, it’s me... again lol. Have three finds from good ole Big Brook that I could use some help with IDing. The first one I’ll choose is just a small bone. ~1.5 inches long. Not sure of the age, did do a burn test and didn’t smell any burning hair, so possibly a fossil? Might be too small to ID but I think I’m getting better at finding bones over concretions so I’ll show it off anyways, lol. Second one is a “swirly” formation I keep running into. This one is the biggest I’ve found, ~1.5 inches long, although I’ve noticed them popping up in my sifter more and more. I originally thought something man made or a concretion. My stepdad really wants a good ID on it though and asked me to post it, I figured why not? IF it is some sort of fossil, I’d guess some kind of coprolite mayhaps? Sort of reminds me of fish poo lol. Now the last one has me stumped. I thought it was a tooth because of the signature “enamel sheen” it has, but on further inspection instead of the striations going up/down, they swirl instead. Like a fingerprint. Not sure if it might be a fossil still. It is tooth shaped, the pattern is what throws me off. There’s also a hole on the top of it. It’s small, maybe half an inch. Worth a shot putting it up here though. As always, thank you for the time and experience!

Picked up in big brook: a stone that looked vaguely bone-like. Dried up at home and surprise it’s bone. 3 x 2 inches. Can you tell me what kind of bone and of what animal. I’m guessing not my usual deer bone. Thank you all. Is this a job for Harry Pristis?

Hello all another Saturday morning in Big Brook. Explored the Kovalski tributary which was not very productive. I did find a couple of old broken bottles that I posted about it “trips”. I did find this tooth, 1 1/8 inches which I believe is Enchodus and if not then other fish, not shark. Thank you for your expertise as always

My 18th trip to Big Brook this morning. Trying to get to other spots not just the same honey holes. Explored the Kovalski tributary today. A lot of downed trees to climb over or under. Unfortunately not very productive. My most interesting finds were a couple of broken bottles; one Hunyadi Janos Saxlehner Bitterquelle circa 1900 and the other the bottom of what looks like a wine bottle but very thick and clearly not made in a modern bottle factory. My most plentiful finds were the garbage - metal, plastic and mostly glass - which I pick up and carry out. I’ll be back next week and already psyched to go

I’m still learning to distinguish the different types of Big Brook shark teeth. Yes I can tell Crow from the others and am pretty clear identifying anterior Goblin but do get confused with other Goblin vs Sand Tiger vs Mackerel. Hopefully someone will confirm that this what I think: posterior Mackerel. And if I’m wrong what is it? Slightly more than a half inch wide. I'm fairly certain this is an Enchodus tooth, please correct me if I am wrong. Found this beauty scanning a gravel bar with majority of black rocks, it stood out shimmering in the water. I'm really astounded by how defined the cutting edge still is on this. I seriously comes to a pin point that is just as sharp.

Hey guys, me again! Went again today to Big Brook, found a lot of neat stuff. Got my largest crow shark tooth yet, a couple small shark teeth, a ghost shrimp claw, and a perfect tiny shell impression. Picked this up as well just because it looked different. Hollow, conical, with a cutting edge that’s black and shiny. There’s no visible striations except for one line down the middle of one of the sides. About 1/2 inch long. From the tip it’s slightly prismatic in shape. Of course, it could also just be some funky rock formation. Anything helps me learn how to ID actual fossils though Thanks in advance all! Loving this forum, learning a lot!!!

I realize this is a long shot for a Hadrosaur tooth but what do you all make of this? The composition keeps befuddling me, its so smooth but not like slag and not concretion. Any ideas?
