I am planning my second trip to New Jersey in a couple of weeks. I want to return to Big Brook and/or hit up Ramanessin. Last time I went I had a spectacular time at Big Brook, and one of my fossils is still pending identification with the NJ museum Last time I parked at the Boundary Road lot and walked south to the riverbed, figuring less people probably went that way. Are there better sections to explore or better/different access points? Also pondering Ramanessin just for variety/the heck of it. Shown is the rough map of where I wandered last time.

My family and I just enjoyed a whirlwind, 3 day mini vacation. Tuesday we got up around 5am and left the house by 6 and headed to New Jersey. We arrived at Big Brook by 10:30. The day started off very slow. We weren't finding much and needed to move around a bit. Finally the last gravel bar that we hit started paying off pretty good. My family wasnt into it as much as me so the boys only found a few items ,but better then nothing. I scored a nice amount, of mainly sharkteeth. (Which is fine by me). Here is my haul.

Pushing my luck with a 2nd request today. This from my huge assortment of “maybes”. 7/8 of an inch. Very triangular piece as I hope is shown in the photos. Bone? Fossil or modern? Of what? And I understand those are likely difficult questions based on a small fragment. Thank you in advance on any help you can give me

Hello all i keep finding these and hope they are crab claws or similar and hopefully not just something off a tree. I attached photos of four although I have a number more. At least I’m pretty sure you won’t say they’re concretions. Thank you in advance

I had a fun morning Saturday after the storm. I posted in fossil hunting trips about my find of my lifetime... almost. Along with the Shark and fish teeth I have one tooth I can’t identify. Seem too wide and round for shark or the usual fish. 3/4 inch. Any ideas? Also this 2.5 inch bone fragment that I thought someone might be able to identify from the top. As always thank you for your insight and assistance

I was in big brook early Saturday. After the storm Friday the water was higher faster and murkier than usual. I was walking down stream trying avoid stepping on and tripping in some of the big stones. I avoided a roundish one but noticed some lines on it. Looked again and the lines were not just random. It was 3-6 inches below the waterline and I bent over to look at it more closely. It was a turtle shell. It was bigger than my pan it looked to be complete. Omg! I was so excited. Fossil or modern? I figured modern but was just fine. My concern was that it would have innerds att attached but ok I would clean whatever needed. So I went to gently tip it over to look with my trowel and it MOVED!!! Upstream!!! Touched it again and it moved against the current a bit faster. It had never dawned on me that it was alive. And so I went on to the usual big brook finds and the memory of my greatest find of my lifetime ... almost

Good morning allow me to first say how much I’ve learned from you folks. Admittedly starting from scratch, by reading your posts and then googling words I’m getting a great education. I never knew what concretion or chert or phragmocone meant. I have a long ways to go but I’m learning today’s question is these two photos. They were found in big brook and the longer is one inch long. Chewed up belemnite or ghost shrimp burrow (wouldn’t be porous?) or what?

Great day in big brook from 7am to 12 noon. Whole bunch of shark teeth including the biggest one I’ve found yet; 1.25 inch goblin plus a lot of John Snow teeth. A couple of pycnodont and a couple of cow nosed rays. One small enchodus and a couple of TBDs. Did also find one tick when I got home so be aware

Hello all i believe these are both mosasaur teeth but wanted confirmation by folks with much more knowledge. The bigger of the two is 7/8 inches long thank you for your help

Hello all last trip to big brook was great. Found a lot of small shark teeth and more. On my way out in a hurray I picked this up, forgot about it and stumbled on it today. 3 inches long and the texture sure looks like bone. But I am a newbie and was hoping for confirmation. I assume it’s way too small to guess from what (but if you can guess please do). Major question is whether this is a fossil or modern. Any clues from the photos? Have never done a burn test but am ready to try. Sorry to say but it feels light not heavy tjank you

Hello i found this yesterday in big brook. It is 1 1/8 inches and has 2 ridges the entire length but not serrated. It does have the typical curve of an enchodus but I think it’s a fish tooth. Your help greatly appreciated

Hello again. Ive been to big brook a couple times and have some more interesting pieces! So here we have two raptor teeth, a dwarf mammoth tusk and a dire wolf tooth...just kidding but hoping there as unique as im saying. The "theropod" teeth may just be worn shark teeth or enchodus. And the other two modern? So 4 things in total though. Thanks anyone.

BIG BROOK PRESERVE, NJ. Creek fossil. June 14th I was able to identify all of the fossils we found on our hunt yesterday, including a nice goblin shark tooth, but I found one item that is a mystery! I attached pictures. I originally thought it was Lenni Lenape money... but realized wampum is made of shells and much larger. I then thought it was a Dutch colonial button.. but doesn’t look like any of the ones online. Is possible to be some sort of “bead”? Or petrified wood button? It is very very light in weight.. but solid.. and the imprint on the one side is a perfect thumb fit. Or is a fossil? Is a small fish or shark vertebrate??!?!?! (I didn't think so, because it seems to flat!) Thank you sooo much for any insight and ideas!
