My daughter and I made it out to Big Brook today. A few fellow hunters out there but for the most part we had our area to ourselves. Water was still cold but new hip waders with thick socks were a nice addition to my kit. Found some of the typical items. Belemnites and Oysters (Agerostera mesenterica Morton & Exogyra costata Say). Also a few nice shark teeth and my first snail.

My daughter found this at Big Brook today. It has enamel on it but it doesn't strike me as a shark tooth. Some slight serrations on the outter edge. Any help identifying would be greatly appreciated.

This is a Big Brook, NJ find in Feb. 2019. I'm new and still trying to figure out fossil from non-fossil. I thought this looked like a piece of bone.

Laying thick in the mud after a torrential rain. I'm certainly not proficient but was thinking Mosasaur tooth with root? Any ideas?

I wanted to post a couple pics from this weekend. I found a few teeth and things I am happy with. I could use a verification on the identities though. Thanks for looking!! Andy I think these 2 teeth are both Cretolamna Appendiculata. A very nice fish vertabra? And finally my favorite bivalve to find in the brook. I can't identify it for you though. It reminds me of the giant clam that tried to eat Batman and Robin back in the 60's.

Just wanted to post a pic. I've been to Big Brook a handful of times over the past year and found some nice shark teeth and other trinkets. This Winter I found a really cool tooth I was very excited about...and then sad about...and then was happy again to have it...even though it was broken. I think it may be a pretty unique find and even though I go for the shark teeth, this one is my favorite find so far. I'm sure you guys will recognize it! Andy

Hello ! I just pulled this strange looking item out from the big brook river in NJ the other day.. Its about a 1/2" in size and that's all the information I have on it. I know for a fact it's not a concretion like my last post! Thank you all for advancing this new comers knowledge & passion for fossils that has recently been ignited .

I believe these are parts from a crab I found in NJ, from what I see I think the large one is from the shoulder or bicep from a crab, is it possible to identify anything else about the animal?this side is fairly flat with the bottom edge protruding out.this side is round but in pretty bad condition.side view of the piece.

Here is a fossil shell I found on a fairly recent trip to big Brook nj, towards the right there is a burrow that looks very straight and in the end of one some kind of dark conical figure is located, not sure what it is, any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I found this piece on my first ever trip to New Jersey and knew it was something, but was unable to identify it due to my inexperience at the time. 6 years have passed since then and I now recognize the pattern on the specimen to resemble a crocodile scute, if this is accurate I believe it would be my first crocodile specimen from the state. What do you think? It's about 2/3" long.

Went on a trip to Big Brook in August, finds weren't amazing only shells and belemnites and absolutely no teeth but we also found these two rocks that look highly unusual I want to see if these are fossil and if so what they could be.

Been going to the brooks of NJ for over a year now so once I go through my phone I’ll post some more pics on top of my better finds from there. Today I was fortunate to meet @Trevor and do a little hunting with him. Thanks for showing me some new spots and techniques. Didn't have the best of days but went home with quite a few. Not quite sure what this is. I think it might be a part of a ghost shrimp but could be a concretion. Hopefully @Trevor will post his finds from today in here. All are more than welcome to share experiences and their trips in here also. Thanks for looking - Paul

Hey all, Made it to Big Brook Preserve today with my daughter. Water level was a little higher than last visit and water starting to get cold. We found some decent teeth. Nothing large which is typical for this area but some nice specimens with great coloring along with partials. Toss in a few Belemnites and it was a good last trip to Big Brook for the year.

I had a great day today sifting with my mom. We started at Ramanessin but the finds were far and few between so we switched to big brook. I found this in one of my last sifter fulls. It was sitting right on top after I sifted the sand out. I was wondering if this is most like Pleistocene or more modern and what kind of animal it might be. Thanks!

Headed out to Big Brook tomorrow. We have a few hot spots for belemnites and oysters but not so for shark teeth. When we explore this area we always head downstream of the bridge. Is it worth exploring upstream of the bridge? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, I just returned from a summer in northern New Jersey and had the chance to fossil hunt at the Ramanessin Brook site near Holmdel, New Jersey. We went on 7/28 after a series of heavy rainstorms, so we knew we would have an easy time at finding recently exposed material. We found the usual cretaceous shark teeth fossils, and then perching on the river rocks was this beautiful lower jawbone. I have included a photo of how it was found and the general site area. The jawbone itself does not appear fossilized with minerals and looks quite porous, while I am assuming the dentine in the teeth was well fossilized and has unique hues of blue, red, and brown that are difficult to capture in the photo. The size and specialization of the teeth remind me of a more modern mammal like a raccoon, but I am from Texas and unfamiliar with what is possible to find at this usually marine cretaceous locality. Is it possible that a more recent mammal's jawbone had fossilized and become uncovered in the same area? I am excited to see what you experts are thinking, and thank you in advance! I would be happy to take more photos if needed.

Hello! i am new to this forum and will use this opportunity to introduce myself. I am from. NYC and made my first visit to Big Brook in Monmouth County NJ because my two children (4&6) are very interested in ancient sharks and reptiles. We were so excited to learn how easy it is to find fossils locally. Could anyone assist us in identifying the tooth shown below next to the goblin shark tooth? I just realized I didn’t include a scale reference, but I know that the goblin shark tooth is slightly longer than 1”. I apologize if I haven’t followed certain board etiquette. Please let me know and I will be sure to adhere in the future. Thanks!
