    Crab fossil maybe?

Hello! My brother and I have gone to Big Brook in NJ a couple a times, and stumbled on this. My brother is convinced it is a crab, while I am still on the fence about it. I've done some searching online and never found any records of a whole crab shell, so it'll be nice to get some identification. Thanks!

    Bone with Bite Mark?

I'm looking for the collective experience of this group to help me determine if this is a bone fragment with a bit mark in it. Or is it just a rock. Here's several photos of the piece in question. Hopefully the quality is sufficient to make a determination.
  4. Hit the Big Brook area the other day. It was awfully hot but at least the brook offered some relief. Hardly found any shark teeth (I never do) but Belemnites were plentiful. Lot's of different bivalves as well. Sad to see that people were aggressively digging into the river bank when it's posted not to do so. Once the land owners bring up collapsing river banks due to fossil hunting I wouldn't be surprised if there were more restrictions implemented.

    Trip to Big Brook, NJ

Based on the advice of many on this forum, I went to Big Brook in New Jersey to look for some shark teeth and belmenites. It was a great experience, fun wading in the river/stream and sifting through the dirt and stones. Some decent finds, limit is to take 5 only, so i opted for shark teeth that i found, as belmenites were few and mostly broken. Here are some pictures from the place and the teeth. Anyone with IDs or any comments, glad to hear them! This is the view from within the stream

    Big Brook Preserve NJ

Took our first trip to Big Brook Preserve in NJ. Great day finding small shark teeth and inkpens. Came across this tooth/claw. No idea what it might be. If it is a tooth there is no enamel left. Thanks

    Big Brook NJ Vertebrate Fossil

Took our first trip to Big Brook Preserve in NJ. Great day finding small shark teeth and inkpens. Came across this bone. My first thought is that it is a modern day vertebrate, even thought it looks like a face lol. It is light in weight as well. It looks to have matrix attactined it some areas, but it may just be clay from the stream bed. Any input would be helpful. Thanks
  8. I was supposed to go on a guided trip to Big Brook yesterday, but heavy overnight rain and flash flood warnings caused the group to cancel the trip. Bummer. Anyway, I am looking for advice on what equipment I should take along, minimal is best, and different locations along the Brook. Thank you!

Hello all, I found this last summer while at Big Brook in NJ. A guy I bumped into there said it was a coprolite, but I want to be certain. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

    Bone or Stone?

I see a lot of stone or bone (??) like this in my searching. I usually toss them aside but I wanted to see what you guys thought. They are heavy like stone but come in these odd channeled forms and also just in odd shapes. Just curious what they look like to you. Thanks. Andy

    My weekend finds

These are my weekend finds I think I found my first Squalicorax pristodontus, and maybe even a Squalicorax kaupi, a couple vertebrae (??), and a couple brachiopods and snails (??). I'm curious about the snails so any more details would be great. Also, the lone tooth tip at the bottom of the picture. It has a wider angle from the point than all but maybe the Squalicorax pristodontus but it is also much thicker from front to back. It leads me to believe it would have been a relatively large, full tooth. Any ideas what it was? Lastly, It looks like I found at least one shark vertebra (on the left), but I was wondering what the other 3 items came from. Obviously the one on the right is very unique. It is deeply dished on both ends and has some structure between the ends. Thanks for looking!! Andy

My 1st Haul. Id ideas please.

Hi, I may have met some of you in the New Member area tonight. If not, Hello from NJ!! I went to Big Brook Saturday and actually found some teeth (who would have thought!?). I felt like a bit of a scientist out there all by myself with my camping shovel and gravel screener. There aren't many sharks to choose from in that area (at least not as far as Fossil Guy's website shows). I would be happy to have some ID opinions. Here are the 3 that looked like teeth to me. They all seem to be from different shark types based on color and shape/style. But beyond that, I would be guessing. One of them is a whiter color than the others and has one cusplet still attached. I would guess Mackerel Shark. The other tooth with a more common looking root attached is also more triangular, with no cusplets, at least not any remaining on the root. Maybe a Mackerel Shark as well but missing the cusplets? The other tooth appears similar to a Sand Tiger or Goblin, less the full root. But it doesn't look broken or worn down at the root, so maybe it is a fish tooth?? That one tooth looks like it came from an Acorn Shark These were all in the silt bottom or in the gravel. I'll leave it at that for now. I have some others to show you guys but I'll try not to wear out my welcome yet. Thanks for any ideas or information. Andy
  16. I think first is coprolite if anyone can confirm and any help on other 2

    Hello. New guy

Hello, new to the forum. Took the kids to Big Brook NJ. Had a great time. We have since been back a few times. Really enjoyed discovering history. Wondering if their are any groups or clubs that get together locally for hunts. I'd be looking to stay realatively close to home in South Jersey. I had a few finds I couldn't match up with anything I'm going to post in the ID section. Good hunting everyone, Jason

    Cretaceous bone

Recently I purchased a collection of shark teeth from Big Brook, NJ. This specimen came with it. I think it is a reptile humerus, however, it doesn't look like turtle/crocodile bones. I have no idea who it may come from - mammal/lizard/dinosaur? Sorry for the image quality.

    ID needed, please, newbie

I am aware that many of the weird lumps and bumps of the iron heavy rock formations in Big Brook make some things that look like fossils that arent. Probably the bulk of these are such. However, im very new at this and I would like to know if any of my guesses are correct. I would be grateful if anyone would help me ID these. ( keep in mind that these are from several trips to Big Brook and this is the entire groups' ( 5 ppl 2x) fossils. We are law abiding and only took the limit each visit, we'd like there to be fossils for people to find for a long time there) fossil one: because of the shiny black on it and its weird shape, i thought it may be a fish tooth? like a drumfish. but it looks wrong. fossil two: really degraded squid guard? fossil 3: probably nothing. i thought it was something because of the uniform breakage in the back fossil 4: i thought this was nothing until i cleaned it off and saw the greyish stuff under the clay fossil 5: again i thought it might look like a drumfish tooth but then i bought it home and looked at the computer images and im pretty sure its not a thing. fossil 6: is that a tooth? fossil 7: is this just a clump of rock and mud? fossil 8: I saw mentioned somewhere on the forum a similar find and someone said it might be like shrimp poop? is it? fossil 9: piece of squid guard? fossil 10: idk what it is. it looks like burrows. but not. fossil 11: a tooth, for sure but not sure what? fossil 12: nada or the tiniest squid guard eva ( included bc its a six yr olds find) thank you in advance for any help you choose to lend me.
