Was down at Big Brook NJ today. Found a lot of the usual suspects. One though eludes my identification. Has enamel on it and is banded. Little bit larger than diameter of nickel.

Hey all, Was looking through some older finds today (from Big Brook NJand was curious on if anyone could shed some light on these. The one tooth I originally thought to be of enchodus, but upon looking closer I am not 100% sold. I could see it being an enchodus worn down or something new entirely. In regards to the second, my thoughts originally were potentially bone fragment from potentially sea turtle? Any input helps!

Mammal tooth found in Big Brook, NJ (rodent molar?) Is it a fossil or modern?

Just found what appears to be some kind of rodent molar in big brook, New Jersey. I know that there are both pleistocene and modern mammal fossils at this site, is there any way to tell if this is a fossil or a modern animal?

I recently found this really cool double Agerostera mesenterica at Big Brook in New Jersey (Late Cretaceous; Navesink Formation). After I finished cleaning the fossil, I noticed these tiny encrusters on the larger of the two oysters. They don't look like your typical Serpula tube worm trace. I am not quite sure what they are. They almost have the shape of being some other type of bivalve. Any help is greatly appreciated. Some close-up photos using my digital microscope

So guys basically my neighbor’s friend has big brook running through their backyard, and they found this recently. They are pretty young, and at first they told me they found a dinosaur jaw or bone or something. So I was real skeptical and expecting it to be a deer jaw. But they sent me a picture, and though not a dinosaur jaw, it’s not quite a deer jaw! It seems pretty big, has a few molars still intact, and has the shape of a bison jaw but I’m not sure. Please help me identify it! This is a picture of it in my neighbor’s friend’s hand so I don’t know the exact size but I will ask.

Hi Everyone, New to the forum here but thought you guys might be able to help me ID some finds from today. Was out today for a few hours with my daughter and we found 2 items that I think might be Dino material but maybe not. I was thinking maybe a hadrosaurus tooth and a long shot on a worn dryptosaurus claw. The claw is interesting because it is definitely not coprolite as it’s rock and not sandy.

Hi everyone, I was at the Big Brook Preserve lately, and in amongst the usual batch of oysters, shark teeth, belemnites, and an ammonite fragment I found one piece which I can't quite identify. I initially thought it was a piece of Enchodus jaw, but when I got it into better light I wasn't so sure. It seems to have definite bone texture to it and I am almost certain it's fossilized, but it doesn't quite match with anything I can think of. (Sorry if the pictures aren't great, I tried the best I could with my desk lamp.) Thanks!

Hi again, hoping this time I have something. From Big Brook, NJ. I cannot find anything like it on extensive research. It's not modern bone. Sorry for the US quarter as I have temp misplaced my tape measure. The black smooth area on the top in the first pic is concave but not uniformly so. In one of the photos I put a pebble in there to try to show some depth it its not noticeable. Thanks again for any help!

Hi, found this at Big Brook NJ and trying to determine if it's possible a Mosasaur or Croc tooth or stone/other. It's about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2" long. Thanks for any info!

ound this vertebra yesterday at Big Brook. Concave on both sides, but one side is smaller than the other, giving it the shape of a truncated cone. If you need other views or macros, please let me know. IMG_1867.MOV IMG_1867.MOV

I found this weird thing this past weekend while out fossil collecting in Big Brook. As many know, Big Brook has a lot of pseudofossils - rocks and other geologic material that look like fossils - so there is a very real possibility this is just nothing. However, it caught my eye and curiosity enough to think to bring it home to look at it closer under my digital microscope. It has an interesting pattern of tiny bumps. Any thoughts on what this could be are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I hope you're all having a good start to 2021. Tonight I'm sharing a fossil which has been in my possession for a number of years. I found it on my first trip to Big Brook in Monmouth County, New Jersey when I was only 11. Some veteran fossil hunters took a look at what I found and told me it was a dinosaur bone. Being a novice I took their word at face value, however after a number of years dinosaur hunting out west, I was able to see that this ID was incorrect. When I showed it to a paleontologist at my local university he did not think it was bone at all and perhaps some plant material. At this point, however I am confident it is actually bone, and most likely from a marine reptile. An interesting comparison I made was with a piece of dugong rib I found on Florida's Peace River. I found that both were quite dense, with small outer pores and minimal spacing in the cancellous tissue (especially when compared to true dinosaur bone). Additionally, the presence of apparent bite marks suggest to me that this is not a concretion or plant material. The fossil is about 6.4 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter. Hi everyone! I found these at the Big Brook Preserve in Colts Neck, NJ in May of 2020. This was my first fossil hunt so I'm pretty sure I was at the wrong exact location but I was nearby. I found them directly in the creek and had to use a sifter. This was also after a rainstorm. I'm not sure if anything here is a fossil, but I figured I'd ask the experts! Found this today out at the brooks, stumped on what it could be - never seen this kind of patterning on anything from the brooks before. Perhaps some sort of armor plate?

I’ve had Big Brook and Ramanessin on my shark tooth hunting list for a while and finally made it up to both today. It’s a 6-hour roundtrip drive from where I live and with the days still pretty short this time of year, I had originally planned to spend my limited time just at Big Brook. After an hour-and-a-half of mostly striking out on shark teeth there, however, I decided to head over to Ramanessin, which both @Bob-ay and @PaleoNoel had recommended. Luckily, the two spots are only about 10 minutes apart, so I didn’t waste much time in transit, and I was rewarded with much better gravels at Ramanessin than I’d found at Big Brook. Some pictures of my trip and finds are below. While I’d hoped to find more intact shark teeth in the Cretaceous streams today (nearly all that I found were partials), all-in-all, I had an enjoyable trip and found a decent variety of things for my first time in the area. I look forward to returning! I parked at and entered Big Brook via Hillsdale Road. Unfortunately, there weren't a ton of exposed gravels there today (I was walking in the direction of Boundary Road, though I stopped about 2/3 of the way there). My first fossil find of the day: Belemnitella americana. These are pretty common and I had a couple from Big Brook already via a trade with @butchndad but this was my first belemnite find ever! I found this Enchodus petrosus fang on one of the first decent gravel bars. It measures 36 mm long and turned out to be my find of the day. This was the only (mostly) compete shark tooth (it's missing the very tip) that I found in my hour and a half at Big Brook. I believe it's a small Cretalamna appendiculata. I only found two other fragments of shark teeth in the time I was there. Photos from Ramanessin coming up...

Ramanessin or Big Brook for First NJ Cretaceous Hunt?

I’m thinking about heading up to NJ tomorrow for my first Cretaceous hunt, and would love any advice from more experienced members, both generally and for this time of year (other than dressing for the cold of course). I was thinking Ramanessin as I’ve read here that it’s better for shark teeth, but I’m open to Big Brook as well if you think it’s better for a first trip. Along the Calvert Cliffs I mostly surface collect—is that also an effective strategy at Ramanessin and/or Big Brook, or is sifting likely to produce better results? Any advice on where to enter/park would also be helpful. If I do go to Ramanessin, I’ve read that there’s limited parking on Holmdel-Middletown Road across from the elementary school (I’m assuming parking at the school itself will be a no-go since it’s a school day, though I’m not sure if they’re doing in-person classes). Hello everyone, My name is Steve. I live in NY. I've always been interested in fossil hunting but only learned of and started hunting sites in NJ as of November 2019. Overwhelmingly I've collected at Big Brook, though I've made a few (underwhelming) trips to Shark River recently. I'm a forensic scientist by trade, and as you might expect, I find interest in all things science. Once I learn how to use this site a bit better I'll share some of my finds. I've had a few days where I recovered some nice size goblins in great shape. Same with a few mackerel teeth. I'm currently at 20 different identified animals (many at the species level, others I think as far as family.) Nice to meet everyone. Will try to have a profile pic up later. Steve

I’ve spent most of my collecting time in Big Brook hunting for Cretaceous shark teeth and other fossils. Unfortunately the water is just too cold for my feet even with 3 pair of wool socks. So as a substitute I have been combing the beach on the New Jersey side of New York bay. Horseshoe crab, oyster shells, wood and a very cool wall hanging of the Hindu god Ganesh. My favorite finds have been iridescent coal which can be quite beautiful (photos of a couple of pieces below). Does anyone else collect iridescent coal or am I the only idiot?

Beautiful day (60 degrees) but the brook was still too cold for my feet. I think I found my best Enchodus Petrosus tooth and jaw by far 1.75 inches by 1.4 inches. 2 carinae. Hoping for confirmation from you folks. Thank you

I recently found this at Big Brook in NJ, USA. I am not sure what this is. The outer layer appears to have a spiral formation towards one end. It's just about 1 inch long (maybe a little less). Thanks for any help!

My 29th trip to Big Brook may well have been my best yet. Instead of my two usual entry points I entered by an unnamed tributary I found on a map. It was small and narrow and overgrown and clearly not the “road” most traveled. Probably the least shark teeth I’ve ever found: photo of 5 below. Picked up several broken bottle bottoms with writing which I get a kick out of including an unbroken Vicks Vaporub! I found a bunch of bone most of which I probably deer but the dark wide one is likely not. Below is a photo of what I think is the first bear footprint I’ve ever seen there. Probably wrong but it had me looking around! Photo of what Of what I thought were an Enchodus jaw and two teeth and a large crab claw but am waiting for help on the ID where I’m being told maybe something’s even better. Picked up a whole bunch of “maybes” which I need to take a closer look at. And finally I got to cross one off my BUCKETLIST!!!! My first arrowhead (have also been told it could be a knife but either way yeah). May well be my last trip for months because my feet despite 3 pairs of socks plus waders were still painfully cold. But if so it will have been a great way to close out my first year of fossil hunting and I am absolutely hooked.

Posted below are photos of what I think is an Enchodus jaw and two teeth and also what I think is a partial crab claw but much bigger than any I’ve found before. I also think I found my first arrowhead. Any info greatly appreciated.
