My wife and I went on a 7500+ mile ramble to break out of our COVID doldrums. Due to the virus we had to change up many of our original plans... which conversely added a number of additional fossil hunting locals as they allowed us to mostly avoid our fellow humans and maintain social distancing by many many miles. As part of our trip preparations my wife sewed us a number of masks, including a whole series of fossil hunting masks for me. Originally we were supposed to stay in Chicago, but we elected to avoid staying in the city, so we only got to do a drive by We started the trip with a bonus dig, meeting up with fellow forum member @minnbuckeye for a guided Ordovician hunt in Fennimore, Wisconsin (THANKS MIKE!) Unfortunately I neglected to take pics of the site so I will only be able to share a farm pic we passed on the way. Mike was a gracious host who kicked off the visit with a gift of several fossil samples from his home turf As with all of the fossils from this trip, all finds are as they arrived back home, no prep. Some of our finds from Fennimore:

Belated trip report from Big Cedar Ridge near(ish) Worland, Wy
RandyB posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
This report is long overdue, but I thought might be worth posting based on the response to the rolling auction items currently up for bid... In the early summer of 2017 my family and I set out on a 7000+ mile roadtrip through 21 states. The trip gave me the opportunity to collect at a couple of famous sites like the Kemmerer's green river formation and wheeler shale in Utah, but one stop combined fossil collecting with some of the most beautiful countryside I've had the opportunity to experience. Big Cedar Ridge is a late cretaceous deposit near Worland, WY. The plant fossils are plentiful but delicate in a light gray matrix, I say "in" rather than "on" because the fossils were the result of a large ash fall that buried the foliage where it stood so the fossils are often in 3 dimensions rather than simply found on horizontal planes. To say it's off the beaten path is an understatement, but it's well worth the effort. Make sure you pay attention to the weather, pack appropriately and make sure your spare tire is in good repair... just in case. We started out early from a bed and breakfast at the base of Devil's Tower (thanks to @minnbuckeye's recommendation). After a 3+ hour drive we got to a spot where I thought the road should be a little past Ten Sleep, but there were no road markers to be found. We went a little further before turning around and taking the unmarked dirt road we initially passed. We didn't see another car once we made the turn so make sure you have everything you need. The drive is 15 miles of dirt roads through BLM cattle grazing land.- 50 replies

I will be taking the family on our trip to Kemmerer the 2nd weekend of June. This is the trip sseth offered up to auction back in Nov/Dec. My 4th had to back out due to a family issue so I posted the open slot under the rolling auction if anyone is interested in joining us out there under sseth's guidance for 2 full days of eocene rock fishing the green river. I will also be hitting Big Cedar Ridge in WY for some cretaceous plant fossils on the 6th and U-dig in UT for some cambrian trilobites for a couple of hours on the 12th in case anyone's looking for digging company that week. I tried reaching out to both Black Cat Mountain and Thiessen Quarry in OK looking for a solo trip on 6/15, but I haven't heard back from either. If anyone has a lead they would be willing to share I would appreciate finding a way to connect with one of them before we go. It's shaping up to be one heck of a trip and I look forward to sharing pics of our adventures when we return. Let me know if anyone is interested in trying to coordinate times at any of the locations.
