Took my brother out this Sunday to do some fossil hunting in Monmouth County, NJ. Rainy day, but it didnt stop us from spending a good 5 hours in the water. We started out at Big Brook, and spent most of our time there. Everything from the Belemnite down were my finds, which included a Crow Shark tooth (Squalicorax), a few Gobblin Shark teeth (Scapanorhynchus), several Enchodus teeth, a small section of Ratfish jaw (Ischyodus), couple crustacean claw pieces, a Mosasaur tooth fragment and an unidentified jaw fragment (brown piece, bottom right). Coin is 21mm. The items left and right of the coin were found in a different area in Monmouth, with deposits from the Eocene and Miocene. This was my first time here and I had a great hunt despite being there for only about an hour. Definitely need to go back and spend more time here. Big thanks to another collector for helping me with ID's. I believe the large teeth are Sand Shark (Carcharias). The teeth L & R of the coin are Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo) and the smaller tooth to the left Lemon Shark (Negaprion). Unsure of the small tooth to the right. The Sand Shark tooth to the left is my largest tooth find to date, despite missing the root, measuring in at almost 3cm. Gives me hope there is are complete examples that size in the same area. Hi All, Thought I'd share some of my finds from a couple hour trip to Big Brook Preserve in Monmouth County, NJ (Monmouth group). Started off the trip stumbling upon a living fossil, who I let do his thing and swim on by! Found some pretty amazing non-living fossils as well. A mix of shark (Crow and Gobblin), Enchodus, Belemnites, few crustacean bits (likely Ghost Shrimp) and a few types of mollusks (Exogyra, Pycnodonte). Thanks for looking, and feedback good/bad is always welcome. Scale - Coin is 2cm/21mm or 7/8".

Found this strange fragment of cretaceous cephalopod- i found many others today, and in the past as well. However this one had a strange fragment that has been fossilized within. I cannot identify it, nor figure out why it is inside this small bit of cephalopod cast. It is rock hard, and i cannot break or bend the bits off that are sticking out.

Finished a fossil hunt at Big Brook, NJ! Need help with some ID.

The first images are of a bone i am almost certain is non-fossilized but i could always be wrong! can anyone ID the species? Next images are of what i assume may be petrified wood, any chance it is? Its quite heavy for its small size, and has a wood-like texture. Then i have this black shell-like thing, unsure of it’s species but it is certainly something. Lastly i ID’d this tooth as a cretaceous thresher shark tooth- am i right? thank you for your help!

Hi All, Had some time off from work this past Friday, and decided to take a drive out to Big Brook to do some hunting. Had a pretty successful outing, finding some of the biggest shark teeth (Goblin) I've found in my handful of visits to the Brook. Would have been very happy to leave with just those few pieces. The best find of the day was a piece of a Mastodon tooth. I'm still learning, and at first didn't realize what I had, thinking it may be part of a turtle scute (still new to all of this). Thanks to a couple members of the "Fossils and Native American Artifacts (NJ and surrounding areas)" Facebook group, they were able to pin an ID. Compared it to some photos of other examples and it definitley looks like Mastodon. Totally blown away by this find!! Had a few other nice pieces photgraphed below. Last piece of the day was what appears to be a rib bone. Could very well be modern White Tail Deer, as the brook is rich an iron, and can stain the bone pretty quickly. I found the Goblin Shark teeth in the same deposit, but also found a partial of a more modern deer jaw. Jaw was partially white and brown (didn't save as I could tell it was modern). In any case, not sure if it's anything but a modern deer rib. Feedback good or bad is appreciated. Thanks! Calm day @ the Brook. Couple sifts in, and pulled this tooth. Good start!

Hi, Discovered this bone today in water, in Big Brook Preservation in Colts Neck, NJ. Site is known for late Cretaceous period deposits. Haven't a clue as to what animal this may have been (deer or beaver?), and was never good at anatomy, so I'm not even going to take a guess at which part of the body the bone came from. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can provide more photos if needed. Thanks in advance!

Hey all, went to Big Brook yesterday and found some teeth here and there. One thing that caught my eye was this. I was wondering if I could get a second opinion. My thoughts are it could either be a Mosasaur tooth or simply a concretion that resembles one. The reasons I think it may be are that it is hollow, has some lines running down and is the correct shape. That being said I know there are many rocks in the creek that resemble fossils that are simply rock, as well as I could just be seeing something because I want to see something. If I could get an expert opinion that would be great!

So guys basically my neighbor’s friend has big brook running through their backyard, and they found this recently. They are pretty young, and at first they told me they found a dinosaur jaw or bone or something. So I was real skeptical and expecting it to be a deer jaw. But they sent me a picture, and though not a dinosaur jaw, it’s not quite a deer jaw! It seems pretty big, has a few molars still intact, and has the shape of a bison jaw but I’m not sure. Please help me identify it! This is a picture of it in my neighbor’s friend’s hand so I don’t know the exact size but I will ask.

Hi all, I recovered this split tooth from Big Brook park in Monmouth, NJ (late cretaceous). I've checked a couple websites that give information on Big Brook, and I can't conclude either way if it is mosasaur or croc (or similar to a croc). I included close-ups to show enamel, and held it to show the shape of the tooth towards its root. Thanks, Steve

Tuesday this week (1/19/2021) I headed over to Big Brook Preserve after reading up on it on this forum and other sites. Made for a cold day in the water but ran across some other fossil hunters (both locals and out of staters like me.) I found a few neat teeth, mainly a few goblin shark teeth, as well as some crow shark teeth, and of course belemnites. Nothing spectacular compared to some posts but defiantly made my week! The locals were finding teeth up by the Boundary Rd. access (that is where I found mine) and I was finding tons of belemnites down by the Hillsdale Rd. entrance. The locals I ran into recommended going up towards a school that the brook runs through as they have found some bear claws there, they weren't sure if they were fossilized (over 10,000) or just really old and preserved by the creek. I did not have the chance to check that area out as I ran into them as I was finishing up for the day. Definitely worth your time if you are into shark teeth.

Hey I found this while sifting and was not sure if it was a vert but i took it home and cleaned it up with a small electric engraver and dental pick and here it is. It looks like a vert but from what? biggest one I have found! Thanks!

So I've been meaning to put up a couple threads on this forum for a while now. I am really psyched about figuring this one out because i'm hoping its a {terosaur tooth! Its hard to Id because of a tip fracture, its hard to tell if its just a bone or what. Also I want to get this "coral" quartz rock ID'd and it is tied to another thread i'm making. Link here;

My family and I made the trek to Big Brook in Monmouth County, NJ today, and we found some new-to-us stuff! The shark cartilage/skin (or maybe it is some sort of fish scales?) is pretty cool. The pycnodont teeth are pretty awesome, too!

Took my 4 yo twins to Big Brook, Colts Neck, NJ yesterday for some fossil hunting. They had a blast. Found 2 vertabra; one only partial. Some ID help please.

I find non-Crow Shark teeth from Big Brook quite hard to ID, and this is a grouping that I just can't figure out. In the cross-section they are sort of like an oval, with a pointed edge at either end - whereas Goblin Sharks teeth seem to have a half-moon cross section. Not stubby enough for a Mosasaur, but also not enamelled and curving like the Goblin Shark. They are between 7-15mm long, and up to 4mm wide. Sorry for the mediocre photography.

This was found in Big Brook NJ. It looks most similar to this Thoracosaurus neocesariensis scute on: http://www.njfossils.net/crocodile.html Could it be? It is very light and shell-like. About 2cm x 2cm.

Sea-urchin-like spines from Monmouth County NJ (Big Brook)?

Finally getting round to identifying some finds from over the years at different sections of Big Brook, NJ. I'm going to try and post them in separate topics. The white sea urchin spine is distinctive, but what are these other things? They have similar dots in lines, but the lines are much more spread apart. See that they have pointed ends and one has a wider end. They are about 2-4mm in diameter. Also, any idea or pointers as to what species the Sea Urchin spine could be? I haven't found an easy identification guide on the web yet. -

The piece measures to be .5 inches by .65 inches and I barely noticed the worn serrated edge, anyone have an idea what it is ?
