I dug this out of a creek bed in eastern Iowa about 9 years ago. I saw the top sticking out of the dirt. The creek bed was probably 20' down +/- a few feet. It was near another rock I dug out the same day that was just a 20lb rock of quartz. There's a couple spots that chipped off showing the white inside making me think it's just quartz. But the shape of it looks like a mushroomed bullet like it impacted the ground. I don't know a lot about how rocks are formed but I don't think quartz is ever pliable enough to form the way this thing did. A friend of mine saw it the other day and got really excited. He asked where I got the dinosaur vertebrae. I never thought about it being a vertebrae till then. When I Googled a dinosaur vertebrae it looks like it could be. I just hope I haven't been keeping a 30lb petrified turd in my living room for 9+ years. So if anyone has any ideas on what I have please feel free to let me know.

This piece is completely petrified (if it’s bone). It appears worn, as well. I’m assuming it’s a partial since the narrow end (picture #2) shows what might be a marrow chamber. Picture # 1: Broad end…5.5 in wide x 2.75 in high. Picture # 2: Narrow end…3.75 in wide x 2.5 in high Picture # 3: entire piece from the narrow end…it’s about 4.5 inches long Picture # 4: entire piece from the broad end I realize it’s equivocal. I have other pieces I’m positive about, but I can’t make up my mind bout this one. Don’t worry, I won’t be disappointed if this one’s just a rock. Thanks! Melanie

Wondering if anyone can tell me what this is… looks like a bone not sure if it is a fossil or not. Pieces fit together perfectly. Found near Canaan, NY.

Good evening folks! I’ve had this specimen in my collection since April 2013 when I first visited Big Brook in New Jersey. I have a separate fossil from the same trip that I am more thoroughly convinced is bone which is highly dense and has probable scavenging marks. If it is a fossil then a more reasonable answer may be burrow cast. I may have slight delusions of grandeur with this piece, but I think it’s worth discussing!

This looks like a claw to me, but someone suggested possibly an alligator tooth. I was at the understanding that most alligator teeth are round and hollow.

I live in Northern Wisconsin in an apartment complex, and the pathways outside are decorated with various rocks. I found this among them, and the closest thing I can think of is that this is a femoral head that is very encrusted in crystal. I'm not an expert, and I've only found one real fossil in my life; I'm also not sure where else to show this to possibly get some information, so any guesses would help out a bit. There is some black crystal inside of it, so I'm also wondering if this might just be some odd geode, but the shape just has me baffled. There is also some sort of pattern near the white portion that looks brown and has a sort of line pattern going up/down from that white portion. Thank you to whoever can shed some light here. Hello. I have been working on properly cataloguing my old fossil material and was wondering if anyone might have any ideas about the origin of these two fossils from Point A Dam near Andalusia, AL. I know they don’t have many descriptive features but figured I might try. Based on shape, I think 1 might be part of a ray mouth plate, lost on 2 completely. Also, my apologies about the image quality; hopefully getting a phone with a better camera soon. Thanks! 1: 2:

Hi all, I'm new to fossil collecting and would love to know any leads on any of the items here. I think I know what some are (I believe there is an enchodus fang, mososaur tooth, bone, etc) but am looking for some confirmation. All have come from Holden Beach, NC. Thank you!

I found this piece at Calvert Cliffs Maryland on the beach and it seems too irregular to be just a rock and kind of looks like it could be part of an animal, possibly a whale or porpoise. Can anyone help ID this?

Hello! I stumbled across these bones while fishing in southeastern Minnesota. My guess is that they are human. I only ever have stumbled upon small marine fossils in the area. I picked it up assuming it was a cephalopod but notice quickly that wasn’t the case. Any ideas? After a quick rinse and some pictures I put them back where I’d found them, eroding out of a rocky bank.
