    Amiopsis lepidota (Agassiz, 1833)

    Taxonomy from Fossilworks.org. Etymology: Lepidota (Greek), a form of lepidotós, scaly. Grande & Bemis 1998, p.490: “ Originally described as †Megalurus lepidotus by Agassiz in 1833:146, and listed that way by numerous authors over the next 100 years or so, but †Megalurus Agassiz is a junior homonym--see generic list for †Amiopsis Kner, 1863, above. Also referred to as †Urocles lepidotus by Jordan (1919:567); Lange (1968:32); Lambers (1992:295); and others." Grande & Bemis 1998, p.493: “Emended species diagnosis-†Amiopsis lepidota differs from other species of the genus by the following adult characters A through D (note there is a range of overlap between some species for characters B, C, and D). (A) The opercle is wider than in other species of the genus (0.96-1.00 compared to 0.77-0.83 in †A. woodwardi, 0.91-0.92 in †A. damoni, 0.82 in †A. dolloi, and an estimated 0.80 in †A. prisca, based on our study sample). (B) There are seven to nine procurrent epaxial caudal rays (versus five or six in †A. damoni, and three in †A. dolloi; the count in †A. prisca is unknown, and the count of †A. woodwardi is within the range of †A. lepidota). (C) There are 61-65 total centra and 48-52 total vertebrae in post-juvenile stages (versus 58-61 centra and 45-48 vertebrae in †A. woodwardi, 59-60 centra and 47 vertebrae in †A. damoni, 56-57 centra and 46 vertebrae in †A. dolloi, and 70-74 centra and 55-56 vertebrae in †A. prisca).   2. I've always loved living fossils, especially the fish. They are relics of an age long lost, offering us a glimpse of an incredible prehistoric world. Some are enigmas that survived countless extinction events since the Devonian. Others are majestic predators that swam alongside the dinosaurs. Let me present my collection of living fossil fishes from the Mesozoic and before. I will begin with one of the most famous of all - the coelacanth Coelacanth Species: Whiteia woodwardi Age: 252.3 - 251.3 mya | early Triassic Formation: Diego Basin; Middle Sakamena Formation Locality: Ambilobe, Madagascar First appearance: Eoachtinistia foreyi was found 360 million years ago in Australia Paddlefish Species: Protopsephurus liui Age: 125.5 - 112.5 mya | early Cretaceous Formation: Yixian Formation Locality: Lingyuan City, Liaoning First appearance: This is the oldest known species Sturgeon Species: Peipiaosteus fengningensis Age: 125.5 - 120 mya | early Cretaceous Formation: Jehol Biota Locality: Chifeng, Nei Mongol First appearance: Multiple species e.g. Yanosteus longidorsalis found since 125 million years ago in China Pipefish Species: Hipposygnathus sp. Age: 28.1 - 13.8 mya | Oliogocene - Miocene Formation: Monterey Formation Locality: Santa Ynez Valley, California, USA First appearance: Solenostomidae species were found 55.8 million years ago in Italy Note: Although most of this collection only includes fishes that existed since the Mesozoic or later, I made an exception for the pipefish as their order, syngnathiform, existed since the late Cretaceous

    Bowfin Jaw Section?

    After looking through some of the material I brought back from this past summer's trip to Wyoming's Lance fm. I realized I had an odd little piece which I recognized as a section of jaw from something. After some digging I believe it's from some variety of amiid fish.

    Taxonomy from Grande & Bemis 1998. Species diagnosis from Grande & Bemis 1998, p. 189:" Amia pattersoni sp. nov. differs from all other known amiine species in the following adult characters A through H. (A) The number of subinfraorbitals (four or more) is higher than in any other amiid. (B) The gular is longer and narrower than known in any other species of Amiinae. The center of ossification of the gular lies within the posterior half of the bone (indicated by ornamentation pattern) unlike †A. "robusta" where it lies in the middle of the bone. (C) The frontals are narrower than in any other species of Amiinae (width-to-length ratio = 0.31-0.36, Table 41, compared to 0.47-0.65 in A. calva, Table 2; 0.43-0.49 in †A. scutata, Table 21; 0.36-0.37 in † "A." hesperia, Table 31; and 0.40-0.55 in †Cyclurus, Tables 50, 60, 70, and text). (D) Mandible is longer than known for any other species of Amiinae (mandible as 7322 percent of head length is 69%-71%, Table 40, compared to 56%-68% for A. calva, Table 1; 59%-66% for †A. scutata, Table 20; 62% for t "A." hesperia, Table 30; and 51%-65% for †Cyclurus, Tables 50, 60, 70, and text). (E) Number of dorsal fin rays and radials differs from that of any other known Amia (45-47 segmented rays and 44-48 proximal radials, Table 48, compared to 48-51 segmented rays and 49-52 proximal radials for A. calva, Table 16; 51-53 segmented rays and 51-54 proximal radials for †A. scutata, Table 28; and est. 40 segmented rays and 39 proximal radials in † "A." hesperia, Table 38). (F) Fewer abdominal centra are present than in any other species of Amia (30-33, Table 45, compared to 38-40 in A. calva, Table 11; 33-34 in †A. scutata, Table 25; 32 in † "A." hesperia, Table 35). (G) The absence of the lacrimal notch. This notch (for articulation with the first subinfraorbital) is usually present in all other species of Amia. (H) The posterior margin of the opercle is sigmoidal, bulging convexly along the lower half and slightly concave along the upper half, unlike all amiines except for †A. "robusta". Diagnosis for the subfamily from Grande & Bemis 1998, p. 450: "†Solnhofenamiinae subfam. nov. differs from all other amiid subfamilies (Amiinae, †Vidalamiinae subfam. nov., and †Amiopsinae subfam. nov.) in the following adult characters A and B. (A) There is only a single subinfraorbital, and it is slender and rod-like (versus either a series of two or more subinfraorbitals or a single deep subinfraorbital bone, in all other amiids). (B) There is a higher number of epaxial procurrent caudal fin rays than in any other amiid (12 to 15). Both A and B are discussed further on page 596 and pages 582 and 583 as characters 43 (character state 2) and 44. Also, like †Amiopsinae subfam. nov. but unlike Amiinae and †Vidalamiinae subfam. nov., †Solnhofenamiinae subfam. nov. has a suborbital bone and a relatively low number of dentary teeth in adult-sized individuals (12 to 13 versus 15 to 17 in adult-sized †Vidalamiinae subfam. nov. and 14 to 21 in adult-sized Amiinae)." (C) The gular is relatively shorter than in any other species of †Cyclurus (gular length is 32-33% of head length, Table 60, compared to 36-38% of head length in adult †C kehreri, Table 50; 37-40% in †C efremovi, Table 70; and 39% in †C. valenciennesi). (D) There are more dorsal fin rays and dorsal proximal radials in this species than in any other species of †Cyclurus (44-46 segmented dorsal rays and 44-47 dorsal proximal radials, Table 68, compared to 36-39 segmented rays and 37-38 proximal radials in †C kehreri, Table 58; 41 segmented rays and 41 proximal radials in †C. efremovi, Table 78; 39-40 proximal radials in †C. macrocephalus; 39 segmented rays and 38 proximal radials in †C oligocenicus; 38 proximal radials in †C. ignotus).
