  1. Hiked up to some Devonian Foreknobs Formation exposures yesterday on a mountain in the Jefferson National Forest in Craig County, Virginia. Found some awesome and beautiful ammonoids, cephalopods, and more!!! Now I’ve just gotta find some trilobites and crinoids...lol Some of the better ammonoids I found in some mudstone: Some of the different types of cephalopods along with some brachiopods: And 2 unknowns, not a clue in the world what these are:

    Devonian Identification Dilemma

    Recently I have taken interest in fossil hunting after discovering a plethora of fossils from some farmland in Southern Indiana. It is my understanding the fossils are from the Devonian period. My grandsons (5 and 6 years old) and I have collected several specimens I’ve the last couple of months. I have been searching the Internet for weeks trying to correctly identify our finds and just when I think I have something identified —I find other possibilities. I would like to make displays for the grandkids and label our other collections appropriately. I am in hopes this community would help identify the specimens, and provide advice on how best to label the fossils. I appreciate any assistance that can be provided.     Trimmers Rock finds from Danville PA

    Found these specimens when hunting just outside Danville, PA in a roadcut near the Susquehanna river. The location is Trimmers Rock formation. I'm fairly certain that these are brachiopods but I haven't been able to ID them with any certainty. Mainly at that site we find beautiful Mucrospirifer specimens. However, these specimens appear larger and don't, to me, seem to be Mucrospifier. Most of the research I've done has yielded IDs that seem to be typically smaller than what I found. The first image shows the two parts together, the second shows them side by side with the top piece flipped over, the third shows the bottom piece and the fourth shows the top piece. My best guess is Leiorhynchus.

Making replicas of my fossils has always been something very interesting to me, but for the longest time I wasn't sure about how it should be done, casting although it could preserve a lot of detail can be pricy if you want to make replicas of multiple different fossils and it is something that I am just very unfamiliar with. From that point my attention turned to 3d printing as this technology can allow us to replicate objects fairly inexpensively, but when I started to looking at 3d scanning for actually making the models I found that scanners were not all too cheap either ranging from about 500 dollars into the thousands. This is when I discovered photogrammetry, which allows you to make 3d models of objects with just a number of regular photographs taken from different angles, no need for expensive tools to scan the object. I found a free program called 3DF Zephyr that allows me to upload up to 50 pictures of a certain item and construct a 3d model from them. Yesterday I installed the program and immediately went to find one of my fossils that would be good to start off with, I wanted something where I wouldn't need to scan it from the bottom and something with good surface that would work well with the software. I thought that my Flexicalymene ouzergui from Morocco should be perfect for this. I read that you should take pictures so that every desired point of the object is seen from at least 3 different angles and so I took the bug and started doing that, I used 3 different elevations for the camera and rotated the bug taken pictures from many different angles, I ended up with a total of 45 photos. I then uploaded all of these directly into the software and it used all but 1 photo. It took a few hours to construct point clouds of a bunch of different points on the bug and some time after to reconstruct a mesh from that. What I ended up with looked pretty good and I was really happy with it for my first attempt, especially since I have heard that it may take several for you to get the model looking correct but nonetheless there were some issues with weird floating geometry around the bug. To address that I first selected everything disconnected from the model and removed that, then I took a lasso tool to select and remove all of the blobs attached to the bug that I didn't need. Here is what the model looked like before and after this: Now I saved the mesh as an OBJ and brought it into a different program to fix all the holes in it, make it solid instead of just the hollow shell I got from the scan and smooth over certain parts. This step was very successful and the model looked great, now it was time to print it. I took it into the next program to scale it properly and slice it for printing, I scales it roughly to the same size of the original bug and added all the needed parts to print it. The first print got disconnected and failed but then I made some slight changes to the model and leveled out the print bed, after that it was very late and I went to sleep but woke up today to a perfect copy of my Trilobite, it had some supports holding it up which were a bit reluctant to disconnect but after a bit of cleanup it looked great. Here is the finished print alongside the original: This has been a really fun thing to try out and now I want to do it with some more fossils, I think the next one I am going to try will be a small crinoid and then a more challenging model like a brachiopod where I will need to do some processing with photos as I will be taking pictures from all sides of the object. I encourage anyone interested to try it for themselves, if you want any help or additional information as to how I did certain things here I would be happy to discuss that with you.     Brachiopod Topanga Formation?

    Recently received this Brachiopod that was said to come from the Miocene Topanga formation. No species was listed and I haven't found any documentation that says there are brachiopods from this formation. I know there are some from nearby formations but unsure what those look like.
  7. The Brachiopod here is Gigantoproductus giganteus - well named, as it is the largest species in my extensive collection. The coin is about 2cm. in diameter. The age of this fossil is Lower Carboniferous ( Mississippian).

    Fossil ID

    Dear fellow TFF members, I purchased this one from Creede Colorado but it is likely it does not originate there. I understand not having a definite location will make identification hard. Thank you for your time and expertise. Measures a little under 3 cm.

    Devonian Brachiopod ID

    I have a find from my hunt last Tuesday that has me stumped. As I took a break from pounding rock I took a walk around the site to surface scan the surroundings. I saw a slab with a high concentration of spiriferids. I decided ti try to break the grouping off the slab. This resulted in a Mystery (for me) brachiopods coming out with one of the spiriferids attached as well as some imprints. The item does not photograph well but hopefully someone can make out what it is. It measures 3 inches across. Found in Middle Devonian Hamilton Group Moscow Formation. @Fossildude19 @Jeffrey P
  11. This unusual Brachiopod is Leptodus nobilis. During the Permian there were many examples of 'experimental' Brachiopod genera. This genus, in life, had a greatly reduced valve which exposed the brachidium which supported the lophophore, and so we see the inner workings of this animal. In the picture are two specimens, each about 6cm. X 3cm. They are from the Lower Kamiyase Formation, Kesen-numa City, Honshu, Japan. Quite rare fossils, I think.

In my Secret Santa gift last Christmas from @connorp I received (among other nice items) a very nice little hash plate from the Mifflin Member of the Platteville Formation (U/M Ordovician, Blackriverian, ~453 MY) from SW Wisconsin. The picture below is the plate as it was received and in my 12/20/22 post about getting it I said: “A great hash plate. I already see two or maybe three different trilobite types with a couple of them tantalizingly partially buried and an interesting gastropod that I am not familiar with. I think a little prep work will make this even more spectacular. As an added plus, it represents my first fossils from the state of Wisconsin.” I finally got around to doing the prep I talked about and spent a little time exposing some of the more prominent fossils and giving it a gentle going over with air abrasion to bring out some of the features. I think it looks even better than it already did and I was even more impressed with the wide variety of fossils on the small section of rock. Below is the cleaned up plate: Here is a collage of the plate just turned at different angles to the sunlight in case it helps to bring out any features: There are hundreds of fossil fragments on this one small piece of rock, but I want to highlight the top couple dozen specimens. With the help of some TFF members via previous posts and replies in a couple of ID threads I put out (thanks @Tidgy's Dad, @connorp, @piranha, @minnbuckeye and others), I have identified several trilobites, brachiopods, gastropods, ostracods, bryozoans, and a crinoid and want to show you this wonderful diversity in such a small space. If anyone sees changes to my ID's please feel free to chime in. Some will be very specific ID's and some will be a bit more general. The picture below is the key to where each of the numbered specimens is on the slab (see number in upper left of each specific picture). We will start with the trilobites. Although each is only a partial, there is enough present to get a pretty specific ID on most of them. All are new genera or species in my collection. Here are the brachiopods: Here are a couple of specimens of a really neat gastropod which was new to me. So often it seems Paleozoic gastropods are just internal molds or rather plain forms, but this first one is very nice. Here are a few bryozoans and one very small horn coral. There were several of these small corals, I'm not really sure of the ID, I didn't research them much yet. Just a couple of small crinoid columnals were found. And last but not least are the ostracods. I am used to small ostracods (which some of these are) but there is also this one form that is huge (by ostracod standards) coming in at about a centimeter long. At first I thought they were brachiopod fragments until I looked at them closer. These things are the size of a kidney bean! Note the scale difference between the Eoleperditia and all the others. Most of my ID's are questionable as I was using a reference that is for the immediately overlying Decorah Formation until I can find a listing for the Mifflin Member. OK that is everything for now. I hope you have enjoyed the wonderful diversity of this small slice in time. With a little more investigation, I may yet tease out a few more specimens worthy of an ID. Thanks for looking. Mike

    All sources had says there are only two genus of the family of this particular brachiopod and Protozgya and Rostricellula is listed for Platteville Formation. Protozyga is too different and much weaker ribs structures by comparations.

    Those are the closest specimen I could find that I think is Anazyga lebanonensis. Described as longer in length than the other two Anazyga species from Decorah Formation.

    Brachiopod identification.

    Dear fellow TFF members, I recently acquired this brachiopod and was wondering if anyone could help me with identification. I know not having a location will make the process of identifying nearly impossible but I thought I would give it a shot. Thank you for your assistance. It measures about 2 cm across.

    Lepidocyclus - Decorah Formation only? For me I hadn't found it in Platteville formation for unknown reason - could be locations. Very abundant and highly variable in forms - I suspects quite a few genus and species can be easily mistaken for this one. Part of it is I only find the smallest ones as strongly triangular and more flat with sulcus not as prominent. But all the bigger one are much more inflated. Plus costae is pretty uniform over all species. Transverse growths are sometimes prominent on anterior portion of the shell, usually on adult specimens.
