I found this today on the Brazos River in SE Texas. At first I thought it was a chunk of a vertebra. After washing some mud off I was surprised to see teeth with roots extending to the broken ends of a mandible. Based on the shape of the teeth I think it is a xenarthran, but which one???

  19. Hi Everyone, I found an interesting large bone fragment in the Brazos River, outside of Harris County, Texas. The fragment has a thick sidewall, so I am guessing it is from a large mammal, possibly mammoth. The thing that I can't wrap my head around is the odd pocket-like texture exhibited on one side of the bone. Could these odd pockets help in the identification of this fossil? Also, I have attached a picture of 2 antlers from the Brazos. They both look like they are whitetail deer antlers to me. One is much larger than the other, possibly due to age and nutrition of the animal? Thanks for checking them out.

    Dog?

When I picked this up I assumed it was modern domestic dog. However, there is a little bit of cancellous bone on the labial side that does not feel spongy at all. It is fairly mineralized. I’ve tried comparing this between domestic dog and coyote And see similarities to both. Please help if you can!
  22. garyc

    mammal bone id

I have seen nothing like this bone before and have no idea how to start attempting to identify it. I've been through the gallery of @Harry Pristis and seen nothing there. I can't tell how complete it is, but I think there are some good diagnostic features there.

    Glyptodon fossil or the like?

ok found this but never took a really good look at it but upon looking at it a bit closer today I found it really resemble a Glyptodon scute. my question is is this what it looks like or is it another bust? If this is what it looks like that would be a cool find. it is 2 inches across and an inch and a quarter thick found in a gravel load west of Houston Texas from the Brazos River
  24. thinking these may be a pair of really worn starfish impressions not sure I caught the right light to see the impressions though found in gravel load from West of Houston Texas from Brazos River.
