Hi, I'd love some information about this fossil. I found it in a river gulley in the Waipara River, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand. I've attached a screenshot of the information board at the site. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hey. So today on a whim I decided to give fossil hunting a go. Took my family to the beach at Glenafrik farm, about an hour north of Christchurch, New Zealand. About 30 minutes in I stumbled across this beauty (beginners luck huh). Now I’m wondering, what am I supposed to do to clean/preserve it? Also, my wife found what we think could potentially be a fossilised log? It is very heavy and to our untrained eyes, looks like a log with bark around it. It was quite different from all the other rocks in the area. What do you more knowledgeable guys and girls think? Again, any tips or thoughts on cleaning/identifying it?

Sorry I haven't been very active on here for a while. 2017 was one of the craziest years for me so far, mostly in a good way. Finally, for the last day of 2017 I managed a trip to one of my favourite places - the Miocene sediments in Canterbury, New Zealand. I left the house at 5 AM since low tide was 9:30 AM. I was treated to one of the most spectacular sun rises (sorry no photo!). I am very sore today from lots of boulder flipping and field trimming but it was worth it! Found a split concretion with a string of shark vertebrae. Who knows there could be teeth in there too? The paint brush is 20 cm long. Unfortunately I had to trim the concretion as it would weigh 70 kg (150 pounds). The fossil wasn't harmed but it would have been nice to keep the shape of the concretion.

Dr Mud, 6ix & TinBum - more crabs than you could poke a stick at.
6ix posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
The good Dr is back in NZ and we caught up again. Time to hit the old hunting spot again - and we werent let down! Of course TinBum found the first couple of crabs, but Doctor Mud and I very quickly caught up. In the end, I stopped photographing them all as the battery was going flat... but wow what a blast. Have a look at this vid after browsing the photos....- 80 replies
