I’d like to see the Pliocene fossils from California that people have I’ll start off with some fossils I collected from the Purisima formation at Capitola Beach A vertebra with a shell on the back A heavily eroded whale vertebra with some associated (rib?) bones Some cool clam shells Edited to add: Here’s a clam shell I dug up from the Pinole Tuff formation when I was 7. It was the first fossil I ever found

What are the fossil hunting laws at Capitola Beach in California?

What are the laws around collecting fossils in Capitola Beach, or really any beach in general in California? I want to go fossil hunting but I want to know what’s legal or what isn’t beforehand. -
I found this on the beach in capitola ca right under the cliffs, any ideas what it could be? its approximately 7 inches and it is still covered in a pretty thin layer of stone but the shape is still mostly clear.

My kids founds this fossil in Capitola, as part of the Purisima formation. Curious if it's something obvious enough for you pros out there?

I purchased this large gastropod fossil at a rock and mineral show back in 1991. The location is from Capitola, California, USA and I believe that it may be Pliocene in age. Any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

@Boesse While cleaning shells from the Pliocene deposits at Capitola I came across this dolphin tooth ~17 mm. Any ideas on a more specific identification? Thanks Mike

Found these pieces while beach combing for sea shells last summer. Didnt realize until i got back home and washed the shells that i found these. I know that they are real rough from the sand but i think that theyre parts of shark teeth. I found these in Capitola CA. Am i correct or are they just shell fragments (sorry the pics might be low quality im new and still figuring this posting out)

Need Id on Unknown piece from the purisima fm. Capitola, CA. Miocene- Pliocene. Texture looks similar to turtle/ alligator scutes to me. Thanks

Hey everybody! It’s been a handful of years since I posted on here, but I was in Capitola recently and I picked up this fossil. The low tide wasn’t very low that day, (3.7 I think?) so...not the best day for collecting, but I drove in from AZ so I went anyway. On my way back to the car (giant toddler in one arm, heavy bag of fossils/shells/rocks in the other, I tripped over this guy. I didn’t get a chance to really look at it but It looked like it might have had bone in it so I threw it in the bag thinking maybe it was a partial vert or something. But now that I’m home and unpacked and have had a chance to actually look at it, it seems like it might be some part of a skull? Does that seem right? (Can you tell I mostly stick to invertebrates? Ha!) Also, sorry if this picture ends up being huge this is my first time posting from my phone and I can’t figure out how to change the size. It will only let me attach one photo, so I’m assuming the size is the issue. thanks in advance for your help! Edited to add Capitola makes this Purisima Formation, Neogene Period so Miocene/Pliocene. Marine fossils. (Forgot all the important information!)

Hello, I am so happy I found this forum, I am a very amature fossil hunter. Yesterday I stumbled across the Purisma formation in Capitola, due to the crazy weather we had this year, quite a bit of the cliff has been eroded away. It has uncovered quite a bit of material. I was able to get a decent sized chunk full of intact shells. Does anybody have a good way to preserve, meaning keeping the very delicate shells in place and surrounding compacted sand? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Found on the beach in Capitola, CA. The tooth is wave-worn and fractured lengthwise. Pinniped of some sort seems most likely, although I haven't seen this fingerprint-like pattern of dark blotches and lines on the enamel surface of other fossil pinniped teeth from this locality. It's unclear if is simply mineral staining, or might be a diagnostic aid to identification. Boesse may have seen this before. Length is 43mm x 16mm across the break.

I found these items years ago in Capitola, CA, where the Purisima Formation is exposed in seaside cliffs. They were found in the gravel 'float' at the base of a cliff. Both objects measure approximately 20x15x7mm, and are nearly identical in form. The concave side retains traces of the sediment typical of the Purisima at that location, and the convex side shows rounded ridges approximately perpendicular to the object's major axis. They have a somewhat similar color and density to bone fragments also found that location. It may take someone who has experience with the Purisima, or a trip to UCMP and/or SCMNH to get these objects identified, but I'm hopeful that someone here can shed some light on what they are.

I know it's bone, I'm guessing whale? Can anyone get more specific? Maybe a piece of rib bone?

Hi, My 12-year old son and I were fossil hunting in the Purisima Fm (Upper Miocene; 3- 5 MY) at Capitola, CA for his birthday (today). We spotted what appears to be a claw?? It may have come from a Pliocene/Pleistocene sandstone from above the Purisima, as the boulder was not in place. The "claw" is curved and has a hole in the tip. At the base, there is a ball-shaped structure. Can anyone confirm if we are right, and if so, identify it. If we are WRONG (wouldn't be the first time), please give us the correct answer. Regardless, this was a fabulous B-day present for this paleontologist wanna-be. Thanks, Kimberlite
