  1. We found this on the Kaw river west of Lawrence. Been finding fossil horse and camel teeth, but this one is different than anything else we have found. My hunch is that it is some sort of incisor, but unfortunately the actual tooth part is broken as seen in photos. Thank you to everyone in advance!

Peace River carnivore tooth and a jaw

Hello FF, Going through some past finds I have rediscovered two peace river finds that I have yet to identify, both were found near Arcadia (brownville i believe). My thoughts are cougar for the tooth and maybe glyptodont or horse for the jaw piece. thanks all! 1. The tooth 2. The jaw piece, only the one socket where a tooth would’ve been

    Fossil Bone - Femur?

I hate to be a newbie who joins a forum just to get help identifying a mysterious item, but since that's what I'm doing - I promise to attempt to be a valued member in the future! I found this 8.4" item yesterday on a Pacific NW beach. It is very heavy, gray rock - like slate. I know next to nothing about fossil bones, but it just doesn't look like a 'natural' rock to me. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  5. Hi all my first thread here… How to tell if this is a real saber tooth skull? Data I know so far makes me suspicious… Origin: Asia / Hong Kong Dealer: Private CoA: Nothing, only photos. Provenance: bought at a fossil fair in 1980 (so, nothing to validate here…) The skull was prepped with a liquid to prevent sucking up water from air. Kind regards flashy
  6. Hi this is posted online. I was hoping to get input on its authenticity. How can you tell new material and composite for older material? Stated it is from Hippareon layer Gansu province Would this be considered a good better or best specimen? Are the sabers all original? Thanks for the help! On a sperate note there are a few on a local auction house that come from China, Taiwan and Korea. Are these commonly fakes?

    Small toe bone

Life is good. I go out tomorrow to the Peace River. I was also there Monday.. There were a few nice finds. I found 1/2 of a carnassial, maybe dire wolf. Seems like I found a mostly whole one in early February. Here is an interesting toe bone. Back 10 years ago , I found a Toe bone, identified as Jaguar 39 mm Medial phalanx by TFF experts. Note the recess to accomodate a retractable claw in the left of the 1st photo.. Then Monday, another toe bone, only 25.5 mm in the sieve. BIG smile. I think once again it is a Medial phalanx. So, is it a Feline Medial Plhalanx (from a smaller cat than Jaguar) OR Maybe a Medial Phalanx from Holmesina floridanus, another candidate from the Florida Pleistocene. Photos below from online. and most of all, what do you see in the photos to choose one over the other... Thanks for all comments and suggestions. Jack

    Identification, mammal teeth

Hello ! For my first post I want to show you some mammal teeth. I don't have a lot of informations about them, probably from North Africa. I don't know their age but all are mineralized so not that recent. I can add the sizes if it's very necessary. Some of them are very characteristics so I hope that an ID is possible. There are I think Rhinocerotidae, maybe Camelidae and others... I'm not good with mammal, all the infos are welcome ! Thanks for your help !

    Big cat distal radius?

I found this radius a while back in the Brazos river in SE Texas. This piece is about 6.5 inch long. It looks much like cat radii I see online but I'm looking for other thoughts. @Shellseeker @Lorne Ledger @Harry Pristis @garyc
  13. Without being able to get hands on with a light or up close inspection - does anyone see any red flags here? Seems legit to me - but it’s a potential big purchase so I wanted to hear some thoughts. Always dreamed of picking up a saber skull one day. ~35cm in length. thanks so much for any input
  14. I know to be skeptical of anything coming from China/Asia, but what are your thoughts on this partial skull. Thanks in advance

    Indiana Mammal Tooth

I found this tooth in my backyard creek along with several deer teeth and fossil bone fragments. This tooth was the odd one out and I just think it's not a deer.
  17. Hello every one, does anyone can help me identifying this vert? It seems a thoracic vert, but I can't identify the animal, it was fished in the north sea so it's from pleistocene sediments. Maybe it's from a big cat? (that would be a Dream ahaha)

    Smilodon tooth ID help

This is the tooth I mentioned in last email. Has serrated edges on side and back 11” long.... I know if it’s real it’s very rare as I have researched a lot and have a good idea what it came from if it’s real but I haven’t got a definitive answer.

    A possible cat claw?

Hi guys! I have something new here and it's very interesting, i think i found a cat claw. You already know that i found in my garden many stuff from Neolithic Vinca culture, such as figurines, pottery, stones tools, microliths and animal bones and teeth as well. So again, i found some cool bones as this claw, but i'm unsure if it belongs to some bigger carnivorous mammal. I compared it with Felis silvestris claw core but it's bigger. I don't know much about carnivorous mammals from Neolithic period but i think that they are the same as today like wolves, bears, lynx, jackals ... If someone would like to help me out identifying this claw it would be much appreciated. Btw, near the claw is i believe some paw bone as well ... Both are quite small and smaller than this battery which i put as a scale . Please help ! Darko

    Mystery Jaw

So I have a new mystery. I found this jawbone in miocene gravel. I found mastodon enamel right next to this. I believe this jaw to either be a cat of some kind or raccoon. It shows signs of being both fossilized and not. It's hard a little heavy and sounds like stone when hit against other stone objects, with a slightly less hard tink sound than that of my sharks teeth but it still sounds like stone. The teeth are still white though, however the two smaller teeth have hard sediment still attached to them and the larger tooth has similar sediment stuck in the part of the tooth that is missing. It's hard to tell if this is a fossil or not. Is it possible for something to be half fossilized?

    Fossil Mammal Skull ID

Hi, I recently purchased this fossil on everyone's favorite auction site. The seller didn't know where it was found or of its provenance. I was thinking it could be by its size and teeth, however I would like input from others on the site. I've been collecting fossil for some time now and haven't seen anything like it. Thanks!

    Pogonodon platycopis

This is an amazing Pogonodon platycopis skull from the John Day Formation in Oregon. These are some of the most rare of the Nimravidae, as well as some of the oldest. See also Eaton 1922, Fremd et al. 1994, Macdonald 1970, Matthew 1910, Scott and Jepsen 1936 and Thorpe 1920
