Found in central pa. Approx 3"x 2" feels too perfectly round and "spiral" for a rock. Pretty heavy for its size about 6.5 oz. Could it be an ammonite and if so how would i go about preparing it without ruining it?

I have several specimens that look similar, the best of which are attached. The margin of the leaves have deep dentation (is that the right term for it?) or very long fine notches. I found them in central Pennsylvania, in a Pennsylvanian period coal strip mine. Any idea on a genus or species?

Another Foss-ilarm ..... oolites in Cambrian Gatesburg Formation
SteveE posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I visited an area with little exposed rocks after a major wind event. The root balls of the toppled trees graciously exposed some of the Gatesburg including this sample. I naturally got super excited, believing I had found an egg nest of some oceanic creature, but a friend told me what they really are. Another "Foss ilarm".- 4 replies

First off, sorry for taking a “field photo”. I took a photo of this and then we left it back at the pit (it’s pure chaos trying to keep 3 kids in order lol). We found a good bit of these darker things near the top of a shale pit in Mifflin Co (I think we’re still in Mifflin, if not it’s the southern tip of Centre). That one on the left by itself is around 2 1/2 inches long (~63mm). I tried to do some research and I think there was also some burrows in the shale in that area, but I’m a total noob so maybe I’m just seeing what I want to see (I’ll get photos of them next time we go out). Hopefully that’s enough info to get started. Let me know if I can add anything else or get more photos when we go back!

Prior to today, the sites I have checked out were from the Devonian in the Mahantango Formation, but had heard of a spot around Centralia (yikes) PA, and decided to venture out. Carboniferous, not sure what formation? These were the most interesting items I found and wasn’t there for a very long time. Any help at ID would be great, there is a lot of leaf patterns in the slabs but they, for the most part seem identical, and also what appears to be a stem or bark of some sort. Thanks!
