8th Trip to Chatsworth: Much Lower River Yields Really Good Trilos!
MeargleSchmeargl posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
It was that time of the month again, when I just had to scratch that fossil hunting itch. After the relative disappointment the other week in Floyd County, I decided to go ahead and pay another visit to my all-time favourite site in Chatsworth. When we got there this morning, it was obvious that the Conasauga river had greatly receded since the last time we saw it. In fact, it was the lowest it's been for more than a year (back in Feb. 2018). River on my last visit (Feb. this year): The river today: And a view from river bank: With how low the river was, I had a greater range of movement than I've had for more than a year's worth of visits to the place as a result. This also meant I had a lot more places to find Trilobites! And the Aphelaspis specimens I found were definitely worth the trip! To be continued- 11 replies

As my life in college is imminent (I head to Milledgeville Thursday), I wanted to fit in one last pre-college trip to my favorite bug spot (An idea that was really given life when I heard about a Schwimmer paper that got into PALAIOS about what may be the oldest nesting behavior ever discovered (https://www.georgiasfossils.com/new-2b-a-trilobite-nest-in-georgia.html)). I can say with confidence that yesterday scored in the upper tier of my trip list to the site. I arrived later in the day than I usually would (got there around 6:00 or something), and the river was once again quite low. As a matter of fact, I think it was as low today as I've ever seen it: I went to work right away splitting some slabs from one of the lower layers that seems to give me the best results, and before long, I was getting quality split after quality split. By the end of my relatively brief 1 hour stay, I had quite a few nice pieces to take with me: Cont.

In the midst of the very eventful day 2 days back, I remembered: I helped organize an OA meet to Chatsworth for tommorow! So I emailed my chapter's adviser and my best friend Barret about Chatsworth, and got together some of the boys together yesterday for an expedition. We all met in the parking lot next to our scout hut. We had 3 scouts in attendance: Dylan, Joel and myself. I was honestly surprised that Dylan made it, as he is almost perpetually busy with ROTC. Before we even left the parking lot, we saw something cool happen: a pair of owls swooped into the tree right next to us. (can you see them?) We all rode with my great uncle Frank to the site under my direction. The other guys (including Frank) were incredibly excited as none of them had ever really gone fossil hunting before, so this was a first for them. I was also excited to test out my new hammer & chisels. When we arrived, I noticed the tide was against us. The river was higher than ever. That didn't stop us though, and we went right to work. (Left to right: Frank, Joel and Dylan diligently cracking open shale to reveal the GA bugs) We killed multiple hours in our quarries, accompanied by chit chat. By the end of the day, everyone had acquired a sizeable haul. Dylan actually got the best of the trip out of all of us, showing off some beginner's luck. We all climbed back up the hill with our finds in 3 separate boxes, and posed for a group picture: Cont.
