    Southern Maryland Miocene Bones

    On the last two trips my son and I have made down to one of our favorite spots near Saint Leonard, MD we found these specimens. I've some guesses about what they are but would appreciate some corroboration. All were found along the shore of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland in the Choptank formation.

    Barnacles? And something else

    Hello good people of the forum, I found some fossils along up a Chesapeake Bay beach north of Calvert Cliffs. I am curious about this one which seems to have some kind of pattern and I wonder if it is a fossil (It’s the first two photos which are both sides of the item). I am also very curious about this collection of what looks like big barnacles. If anyone had any information to share about either of these I would be very interested thank you!
  3. I thought a quick update on the scene along the west shore of the Chesapeake Bay might be informative. We've been going down there using Airbnb for the past few years; this allowed us to stay in Chesapeake Beach in 2021 and access Brownie's Beach a.k.a. Bayfront Park, where the Shark teeth are abundant and even the kids could find them in the surf. Chesapeake Beach has closed all short term rentals post-Covid and getting to Brownies is now very difficult without a boat and taking advantage of the high tide laws in Maryland. (They can block access to the beach, but cannot prevent you walking or boating to the beach as long as you stay below the high tide line.) North Beach just north of town has a beach practically devoid of fossils and too many docks between the two beaches to wade it; you could possible rent a place in NB and canoe or boat to Brownies. Calvert Cliffs State Park is almost 2 miles walk from the road and picked clean to death in summer. This leaves one to get creative if hunting the west shore is your goal. The two aforementioned locations are imho the best in terms of fossil quantities if not quality, public access in the case of the Calvert Cliffs, and generally an easy outing sans the walk to get to the beaches. However... Two options we had great success with recently were the always-faithful Matoaka Lodges and Airbnb rentals in southern Calvert County that get you into some of the other beaches. Shark teeth are not as plentiful in either case. Driftwood Beach is loaded with turitella and various snails but not much else. The cliffs on either side however are loaded with Chesapectans and some other species of clam-like fossil. They continually wash out and are well preserved. Matoaka Lodges on the other hand can be picked to death in the summer as well but normally a small walk north along the surf with reveal both cliff and beach areas with fossils. Loads of Chesapectans here too. Occasionally small shark teeth in the surf. NOTE : I found some weird white fossils in the cliff at Matoaka which are pictured below. Still have not identified it. Some of the chunks were as large as your hand and would flake off identical layers. Anyone with any thoughts please weigh in, much appreciated.

    Shelling Along the Chesapeake

    Inspired by trip reports by other members on the fossil shells of the Middle Miocene Choptank Formation, especially @I_gotta_rock's report from 2018, over the past several months I have made a couple trips to Matoaka Beach Cabins in Maryland to collect some of the incredible invertebrate material exposed along the cliffs and in that way draw the quizzical looks of other collectors there combing for shark teeth. It is a lot of fun to just park myself along the beach and break down pieces of talus with a screwdriver to uncover hundreds, if not thousands, of shells. Unfortunately the shells are incredibly fragile so a lot of effort was taken to wrap the fossils in aluminum foil on the beach and to meticulously expose them with dental tools and toothbrushes and consolidate them with glue at home. Despite my precautions, many shells were lost, both on the beach and at home. I found everything along the beach and in talus falls, except for the large piece of the sand dollar Abertella aberti. On my latest trip to the Chesapeake Bay a man collecting shells along the beach asked me to identify a few things that he had found washed in by the tide. He asked if this fossil was a piece of turtle shell and when I told him that it was instead a piece of sand dollar and that it is rare to find a piece that large, he asked me if I wanted to have it. I of course graciously accepted his offer. I offered a couple of other fossils later on, but he seemed satisfied with what he had already found. There are so many fossil shells to be found along the cliffs of the Chesapeake Bay so I will try not to bore you with all of my finds. I think the gastropods are really cool so I have included all of my gastropod finds. Without further ado, here are my favorite finds: The only vertebrate fossil I found was this Aetobatus sp. ray tooth that was found lodged inside the opening of an Ecphora shell What is a post about Miocene shell collecting without a big Balanus concavus barnacle. This one was found in about six inches of water at low tide on my first trip. About the same time I found the barnacle I found this awesome chunk of Astrhelia palmata coral, which even has some bryozoan on it A couple crab claws found while searching the excess matrix compacted in the shells The aforementioned piece of the sand dollar Abertella aberti Now for the shells. First off are a couple Chesapecten nefrens. I love to find ones that have barnacles still on them. This was my largest one, measuring about 6 inches across. I found one that had both valves, but sadly one of the ears is missing Chesacardium laqueatum blackwelderi Atrina harrisii Stewartia anodonta Dosinia acetabulum blackwelderi Timothynus subvexa Ostrea carolinensis The largest shell found along the beach is the geoduck clam Panopea americana You can also find another species - Panopea goldfussi. I love how this one preserved in life position. All I had to do was dig some of the matrix out and glue the rest in. Glossus marylandica Mercenaria cuneata While finding the big gastropods was the real draw, I also really liked finding the tiny gastropods, which I only found at home after screening extra matrix or breaking extra matrix down by hand. The first of the tiny snails to show off are these three species of Calliostoma. From left to right is Calliostoma aphelium, Calliostoma philanthropus, and an unknown species of Calliostoma. Perhaps my favorite tiny gastropod - the predatory murex snail Typhis acuticosta I believe this one is Surcula sp. Perhaps the smallest fossil I have ever found- Teinostoma calvertense. Can you see it in the photo on the right? Terebra sp. Cymatosyrinx limatula Mariadrillia parvoidea Nassarius peralta Nassarius peraltoides Neverita duplicata The moon snail Euspira heros is by far the most common gastropod. I found a dozen of different sizes. Here are only a few. Mariacolpus octonaria Turritella subvariabilis Crucibulum costatum Crucibulum multilineatum Scaphella virginiana I love this juvenile Busycotypus rugosum whelk shell Spinifulgur spiniger oslowensis

    Maryland Miocene Shells

    I collected these micro shells during a recent trip to the Middle Miocene Choptank Formation near Matoaka Beach Cabins. I have consulted a couple publications and yet I am a bit stumped on these last nine fossils. Any help further narrowing these down would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much! #1- Calliostoma sp. but it doesn't seem to fit any in the publications #2- Drillia? #3- Busycon? #4 #5- Parvilucina crenulata? #6- Caryocorbula cuneata? #7 #8 #9
  8. Here is a brief report from one of our latest forays into Calvert County, MD. The well-known stretch of shoreline along the western Chesapeake Bay is loaded with Miocene fossils, with the Calvert, St. Mary's, and Choptank formations progressively exposed along a ~24 mile stretch of beach and cliffs. We found an Airbnb in Lusby, MD which was not too far from Matoaka Lodges, which seemed the best bet since the nearly 2 mile walk to the beaches at Calvert Cliffs State Park is impractical for our family at this time. Covid-19 and Maryland's onerous private land regulations can make it tough if not impossible to access some of the other municipal beaches along the coast. For example, Brownies Beach, Dares Beach, Cove Point, and Flag Pond are all restricted in some way to town or county residents only. Matoaka Lodges however will grant day-pass access for a small fee, and the beach is from my experience very diverse and productive in its fossils. We spent a total of 5 hours there, employing an 1/8" sieve and also simply walking the surf line. The largest tooth pictured here actually washed up at my feet as I was surreptitiously bending over at the same time. Most of the rest were found with the sieve. Most of these are shark or sting ray teeth and a few turtle shells plus some of the smaller items I could not identify. A local told me that porpoise teeth can be found there also. This lot comprises the smallest fossils found; in addition to these (mostly) teeth and shell fragments were found a large and diverse sample of vertebrate fragments, corals, miscellaneous other fossils (snails, mollusks, etc.) which I will post in the follow-up report to this one. Having spent some time at some of the other sites along Calvert Cliffs this summer, I would say based on the diversity, number of fossils, and time spent collecting, that Matoaka is definitely worth the return trip.

    Quick Calvert Cliffs Trip

    It's been awhile since I've posted...but the good news is that I've been able to make many trips to Calvert Cliffs since my last post. Yesterday was my most recent trip down. The predicted tide and swell forecast looked good and I had visions of megs dancing in my head during the 2.5 hour trip down. I arrived by 6am and after a nice nature walk I was beach-side by 6:30. The tide was high as it usually is during the summer, but it never really went down at low tide (~11:00). That being said, there was very little beach to search and not much being kicked up. However, it was great weather and I spent about 6 hours enjoying the Chesapeake Bay before I called it a day (I usually stay until 5:00ish, but with no beach to search I decided to skip the traffic jam on 695 that is inevitable between 4:00-7:00). I found about 50 small teeth, some bay glass, half a cookie, and saved a few fish & horse crabs. My find of the day and total trip maker is below. Besides some large (for the area) meg frags, it is my largest tooth to date. I couldn't believe it when I saw it sitting along the high tide line, and even forgot my phone in the water when I examined it after snapping a few pics and filming an uncovering video (thank goodness for waterproof cases). Anyway, below are a few pics as found, unearthed, and dried. Although I didn't score any megs, it was a great day to enjoy nature by myself without seeing another person other than a family on a boat that anchored and was enjoying the bay themselves. Any help on ID and scarcity would be great. I'm thinking either lower isurus oxyrinchus/desori (mako), carcharodon hastalis, or possibly carcharodon plicatilis. The exposed formations at this location are Calvert and Choptank, with possible wash from St. Marys.

    Mammal Bone/ Peccary Canine?

    Hi everyone! I recently went to the Matoaka Cottages in southern MD where I found a mysterious looking object, the Choptank formation is exposed here and from what I can tell it is bone of some sort, as it still seems to have bone marrow inside of it. My second guess of the object was some sort of tooth, I had my bets on a peccary canine but my main guess is still bone. If someone could help me identify this it would be a huge help!

    Rare dog tooth

    I found a rare tooth from my local miocene exposure in calvert county md. Found along the choptank formation. Believed to be carnivorous dog. But not positive. Any help with a confirmed id would be appreciated

    Miocene Mystery Shell

    Okay, here's a weird one for any shell people out there. Found this on the Potomac's beach where the cliffs have Eastover, St Mary's and Choptank FM exposures. At first, it was a blob of clay with what looked like a hinge showing at one end. I chalked it up to oyster or mussel. Brough it home, cleaned it up most of the way and said, "What the heck?" The texture is really strange. It's convex where I would expect it to be concave. It's lumpy, but not heavily sculptured. I took it to some people who were more familiar with the spot and/or knew something about vertebrates, in case my mollusk assessment was totally off. No, looks like invertebrate of some kind, they said. I've identified and catalogued over 70- species from the cliffs, pouring over the same references for countless hours. There are a few approximately the right shape, given how broken it is, and have similar parallel growth lines, but the texture and lumps???? And that weird ridge 1/2 of the length from the beak? Multiple shells overlapping? Again I say, "What the heck?"

    Mini Miocene Marine Mammal

    I found this a few days ago along the Virginia side of the Potomac River along a miocene cliff. It's mostly if not all Choptank formation. Any ideas about a genus? Grid is in inches. Looks like maybe mature dolphin tailbone, but it's so small???

    Matoaka Beach 11/07/18

    Hi all, I finally made the trek to Matoaka Beach, a fossil collecting site along the Calvert Cliffs on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The beach is accessible to the public for $5 per person per day. Once we arrived, we reported to the front office where the property owner and his adorable newborn daughter were happy to collect our fee and give us access to the beach along with advice on how to best hunt the grounds. He advised us to head North (left of the entrance), which was what I had also read online. Apparently, the farther North you head, the better the fossils tend to be. So my dad and I made our way down the stairs to the foot of the cliffs, and began searching. The beach is very wide, so it's difficult to decide where to walk. I was finding fragments of Chesapectan shells left and right, but nothing quite worth keeping. But then, after maybe 5 minutes of hunting, I looked down at my feet and saw a large, complete, Ecphora staring back at me. I could hardly believe it. At a site where invertebrates dominate the matrix, a nice Ecphora is just about equivalent to finding a Megalodon tooth. And yes, I am aware that Meg teeth can be and have been found at this site before, but the find that I was after that day was certainly Ecphora. It was a gorgeous specimen, much larger and more complete than any other I'd found before. And there it was, just laying out in the open, a couple hundred yards from the entrance. I excitedly showed my dad the find, and promptly continued hunting, although I knew there was likely no beating what I had just found at the very beginning of the day. As I walked farther North, I marveled at the cliffs, which were absolutely chalk full of invertebrate fossils. It was incredible, and unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I kept finding crushed shells and small pieces of fossilized coral, but nothing spectacular. That is, until I stumbled upon the section of the beach where many huge chunks of the cliffs had fallen. I decided to look for large shells sticking out of the cliff falls, and very quickly discovered the best method for finding fossils at Matoaka. Immediately, I began finding giant Chesapectan every couple of inches in the cliff falls. After unearthing about a dozen, I decided to head North again to see if I could find another similar section. I walked at least a mile farther and found next to nothing, so I turned around and headed back towards the digging site. When I arrived, I saw that my dad has discovered the falls and was digging through them just as I had been. We both set down our gear and decided to spend the rest of our day there carefully excavating shells from the matrix. This was certainly different than the fossil hunting I've done in the past. It felt more like the traditional "dig site" hunting that most people think of when they think of a paleontologist or archaeologist. It was really cool. At one point, I saw a familiar spiral structure just poking out of one of the falls, and quickly recognized it as a small Ecphora. I plopped myself down on the ground next to it and spent the next 20 or so minutes cautiously excavating it. I foolishly forgot to bring a digging kit, so I resourcefully used broken fragments of sturdy shells around me to dig out the specimen. Although I chipped off a few pieces of it, I managed to extract it from the matrix mostly intact. With that, we headed back towards the entrance. We decided to sift for a bit to try for some shark teeth, and eventually I found one and my dad found three. Matoaka is unrivaled for invertebrate fossils along the Cliffs, but it's definitely not a top spot for teeth. Overall, I was incredibly pleased with my first trip to Matoaka Beach. From the friendly owners to the beautiful scenery and wildlife and the fantastic fossil finds, Matoaka Beach is a must for any fossil hunter in the DMV area. We ended up finding a ton of Chesapectan, ranging from "itty bitty" nearly the size of my hand, some stunning Ecphora, fossilized coral and barnacles, some Turritella, and a few shark teeth as well. I already can't wait to go back to Matoaka. Thanks for reading my report. Hoppe Hunting!

    Unusual coloration. Typically these are red, sometimes with buff patches, but not usually all buff. The broken areas show the buff color to be a layer on the outside as there is red showing through the breakage. Collected from fallen cliff matrix in the bay containing index fossils of the Drum Cliff Member, Shattuck Zone 18. Donated to the Delaware Museum of Natural History

    Can you believe I found this just sitting there, sticking out of a block of landslide material on the beach and wiggled it out with a screw driver? Never found even a suggestion of one before and this is only one of two I found in three days of carving through that block to discover the rest of its treasures. The other, sadly, is not in as good a shape, but still a treasure! Found at Matoaka Beach, St Leonard, Maryland.

    Geoduck Clam

    Sometimes you just get lucky. This geoduck (pronounced gooey-duck) was sitting with its mate in living state, filled with matrix, under a pile of landslide rubble at the water's edge. The exteriors of both shells were almost completely clean of matrix. Most other specimens were badly cracked in the matrix and would never have survived the fall. This shell was donated to the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

    I excavated this from matrix that fell out of the Drum Cliff Member of the Choptank Formation in Calvert Cliffs. I have looked at all the books and online resources I have to find a species, but nothing quite matches. If anyone has a species, I'd love to hear! This is the only specimen I've ever seen, let alone found. This one, like most other shells in the matrix, is extremely fragile and would not have survived exposure to the elements long.

    Panopea goldfussii pair

    A recent landslide revealed an ancient bed of these paper-thin shells, all in pairs. They lived buried well into the sand and extended long necks up to the water to feed. Consequently, the shells did not get moved, just filled in and stayed in pairs after the animals died. They can be extracted mostly whole with some great care.

    Cup-and-Saucer Snail

    Due to the extremely fragile nature of this specimen, and the species in general, I was loathe to clear out any more of the matrix from the interior of the shell, so bits and pieces of other shells are present. The large central piece is the inner "cup," which attaches to the "saucer" at only a very small point in the tip. Collected from landslide material in the bay. Donated to the Delaware Museum of Natural History.
