The only descriptions I can find of these are just that they are fossil shells and have "uncertain affinity", whatever this means. Is it simply not known what organisms they were, animal, plant or otherwise? Are there some speculations?

This is our 6th-8th grade fossil program. I was not going to start running these until the fall of this year but thanks to an awesome donation and a few identifications from @Boesse , I am going to do a few with these with displaced students from Paradise really soon. They need creative education and I need a few opportunities to do the lab and make tweaks. I am super excited and extremely nervous about this lab. Marine mammals are so well adapted to an aquatic life that they really present a great opportunity for presenting complex scientific concepts to kids. The difficulty in using fossils

So I've been reading about paleontology for awhile now, I've read all sorts of books and articles and theses, but the one thing I don't understand is what is the complete list of levels of classification? The average example usually shows eight, in this order: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. But since this is only basic taxonomy there are more than just eight; the ones I know are: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Subphylum, Grandclass, Class, Subclass, Infraclass, Legion, Cohort, Grandorder, Order, Suborder, Family, Subfamily, Tribe, Genus, Species, and Subspecies; b

When trying to classify fossils where the species is unknown which do you use? For example is it Tyrannosaurus sp. or Tyrannosauridae indet.? Edit: Using Albertosaurus as an example, I now believe it is something like this. Since Albertosaurus is hard to differentiate from Daspletosaurus and Gorgosaurus any finds should be labelled 'Tyrannosauridae indet.', but if you could identify it as Albertosaurus and didn't know the species (sarcophagus etc.) it should be labelled 'Albertosaurus sp.' until the species is known.

Are you finding cladistics and taxonomy confusing and complicated? Well, that's because they are, but to help you clear up some of that confusion and find your true place in the classification of life there is a new series of videos out that is still being produced but becoming available very rapidly. Episode 15 of "Systematic Classification of Life" is just out and if you start now watching the first 15 episodes maybe the next one will be available by the time you're done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXQP_R-yiuw&t=8s

Where to look for Order, and Family for my fossils?
Mediospirifer posted a topic in Questions & Answers
I'm looking to add a specimen to Collections (my blastoid, seen at this link: LINK), and I'm hung up on Order and Family. My field guide gave me the genus and species, and Wikipedia gave me the Class, but I can't seem to find any sites online that routinely show Order and Family--except TFF's Collections, which doesn't (yet!) include any blastoids. Can anyone point me to a resource where I can find this info for a variety of Devonian and Ordovician fossils?- 4 replies

Hello forum members Do different stromatolites have classifications/individual Latin names? I can't seem to find much on the web. I've been given these stromatolites which came from Morocco and I'd like to label them. Thanks John

Pattern Recognition Software For Use In Identifying Fossils?
smileylizard posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hi, I'm new to The Fossil Forum. I've noticed surface features on dinosaur bone fossils that exist on species without regard to the scale, mineral makeup, or geophysical location of that item. Striations, bumps, curvatures, texture, etc. I was just wondering if there is a recommended application or graphics viewer which contains an algorithm which could be used to more easily identify and confirm various fossil discoveries? I started looking at DigiKam, but decided to ask here before going down a potentially immersive tangent. even outline of shape would seem beneficial to me at this point...- 17 replies
