I found this gorgeous crocodile tooth along the Calvert Cliffs and it looks like it has some strange white staining on it. Rinsing it with warm soapy water doesn’t seem to do anything. Is there a good way to clean off the stains or is that just how the tooth is. Thank you!

Recently, I found some mammal fossils right next to a river. The bones were buried in clay but the water had removed some sediment so they were visible although they were broken in tens of pieces. Later, I cleaned the soft clay from the bones and placed the small pieces together using normal glue because I have found out that its results are nearly as good as fossil glue or at least it doesn't have visible differences. Although the bones are almost complete, there is still a lot hardened red clay that doesn't go away with water or brushes. What should I use to clean the fossils completely without damaging them? (with household items if it's possible) Here's a photo of my 2 favourite ones.

I found this gembone and want to get the algae off. I soaked it in hot water and dish soap, then scrubbed with a toothbrush, but the algae is really stuck on there. Any tips?

I went to St Leon Indiana, and I had a pretty good haul!!! Spent the day out there I have several fossils that are from the Ordovician time period and they’re in limestone, limestone shale. Does anyone have any good tips on washing them? Do you prefer dry? Just with a brush? What about any rusted stuff, do you use oxalic oxide? What about algae? Do you prefer water? Soap and water? Hydrogen peroxide? I’m afraid and don’t want to ruin any. Thank you! Jessica

Help - How do I remove this coarse tar-like substance?
Mr.dogdad posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
Hello, I am hoping someone can help me! I have a Daspletosaurus tooth from the old man formation. It was found with a coarse, tar like substance stuck around the tooth (shown in photos) that won’t come off. I’ve tried rubbing acetone but that didn’t work. I tried picking a piece off but the enamel came with it. Are there any alternative methods I can use without risking any damage to the tooth?- 10 replies

How easy is it to damage a fossil? I've gathered some interesting possible partial fossils from a couple sites adjacent to a river, so of course there's mud to be removed. I was (I thought) using gentle methods that I don't think would cause damage, but perhaps they're incompletely fossilized (if fossils in the first place)? I rinsed in the adjacent river 1st, dried with microfiber cloths. Later, noticed some changes in appearance... Well, before cataloguing my sins, let's start off with what one should or should not do? Thanks

Is there anyone in Ontario that can direct me how to better expose more of this fossil or who I can pay and mail it to for revealing more of the body of this guy? Please? I suspect he’s almost curled ATM and the bottom of the rock is his back with a lot of magiexi between his and his mouth and covering him completely. Is it even possible to expose more of his body/limbs?

Hello- My son and I recently found this Tully Monster. I am wondering what everyone's thoughts are on cleaning this, and what approach may be best? I have cleaned jellyfish and some other white calcified looking material from these types of concretions using vinegar for a few minute soak, but have heard that it may not be a good idea since it removes some of the material that helps define the imprint. The Tully we have was found in two different scenarios. The first image, the side was facing down in the dirt a the top of a hill. The second was found face up in a pile of leaves at the base of a hill. The side with the darker green black seems to be the one with the most potentials for cleaning but I am no expert so wanted to check to see if we are better off just leaving the sides as is. thanks in advance, -tom
