I found this peculiar looking formation while rock hunting. It was wearing a coat of minerals and resembled all the other rocks in the area, however, the shape was slightly different than all the other rocks so I picked it up and brought it home. I used a bench grinder on one side to see if maybe it was gold ore. Once I held it on the grinder for a small amount of time, I realized it wasn't any rock I've seen here in Washington state . I've been using a soft but some brush on it, removing the black that's between what appears to be bones. I'm not sure really what it is. It's been quite a conversation piece among myself and my company friends and coworkers. I do hope it's a fossil of course, an egg pot will be really cool. However if it's not, I'm very sorry for wasting your time, and I do appreciate you reading this and helping me figure out what it is. I was looking at getting a chisel for extracting fossils from limestone and slate. I was presuming masonry chisels are "best"... however, most of the masonry chisels I have seen are quite large, and I wanted one smaller. Are cold chisels suitable?

Following the naming convention of others before me, I had the 1st hunting trip of the new decade (at least at Big Brook!). I was the only one in the parking lot 1/1/20. I think I've actually hunted all three holidays this season, and enjoyed the nice time in nature. Here are some of my finds. Andy

I know little about compressors and I am thinking of putting a compressor in an unheated garage. Is that an issue? Winter temps in there could be minus 25-30 F. Also, is distance from the compressor to the work area a problem? Mike

Ocean down our way has been pretty rough, so time to hit the beach again. Main mission was to get some nice bone for a side project but good crabs are always priority. @Doctor Mud couldnt make it due to flying from Australia and getting back before work on monday was a "bit of a mission". Only a couple of photos sorry because it started *raining sideways* and my phone was getting covered in sand and water and popped up with a warning that the plug hole was getting wet. The Cliffs have been moving and with some really big rocks that rolled 10 meters or so out across the beach so I was very cautious around the cliffs. I know its probably not, but this looked to me like a shark tooth negative... I'm sure I've seen this one before... I threw this feller out onto the beach for my return journey incase I didnt come across anything better - however I didnt pick it up on the way back. Anyway after here it got too wet for the camera, and even my hunting wet weather gear was starting to soak through so no more photos. The beach was not good, churned up but a lot was buried - then I came across an old friend. I found him a few months ago but had a full backpack. Have tried to find him on a couple of trips since but no luck. But - 150 metres to the north of when he was last seen - my back moaned as I flipped the rock and I knew I was committed. You cant leave one behind when nature has done such a good job already.. @mamlambo - I see your 23 KG and raise you 10KG

This past Sunday Mrs.SA2 and I ventured out for what was going to be my last opportunity to fossil hunt in 2018 due to my work schedule. Sunday's weather forecast was for upper 40s F, light rain - mist, 15 mph Nor'east winds gusting to 20 mph, 3 foot waves and water levels along all the rivers running double normal for this time of year due to all the recent rain and snow melt. Obviously, not ideal for fossil hunting along any of eastern VA's swollen rivers but it was the last day I could hunt this year, so we were going to make the best of it. Mrs.SA2 is quite the trooper and always up for an adventure. (I think she was just humoring me since she's off work from Christmas Eve till after NYs and plans on doing lots of fossil hunting with some of our fossil friends.) We hit the beach at high tide and hoped we would get at least some water level drop moving towards low. No such luck, wind picked up and waves started crashing the beach. We spent about 5 hours walking what little beach there was and found plenty of (several hundred) small sharks teeth, but nothing exciting, not even large broken teeth. I did manage to find a worn dolphin periotic, which are always nice to find and we pulled out quite a few Chesapecten nefrens from recent slides/falls, but that was about it. Nothing worth even posting photos of on TFF. Before hitting the beach we had discussed the cliffs being super-saturated from all the rain and recent snow, and the need for us to stay together and to pay particular attention to the cliffs as we moved along. There were even a few places we walked out in the waist deep water instead of under some nasty looking spots. On our way back to the entrance point, we stopped so she could put the teeth she was "hiding" in her mitten, into a plastic bag, as we knew we were approaching one of the spots where we needed to walk in the water. As we did that, 10 feet in front of us the cliff broke free and dropped about 4 dump truck loads of material and 2 very large trees down on the beach. Photo below from the upstream side. Thank goodness we were on the downstream side at the time it fell since you can see the trees covering the beach on the upstream side. Downstream side looked much more dramatic with all the cliff material, but smaller falls were still occurring there, so we went into waist deep water and moved around the danger area fairly quickly yet carefully. Eastern VA has experienced its wettest year on record and it's still going. We are forecast for another 1.25 - 1.75 inches of rain tonight through tomorrow night and 2 more significant rain events before years end. It will all be storm runoff as the ground can't absorb anymore water. There is standing water everywhere. I can only imagine what the Freeze - Thaw Cycle will do to all the cliffs and bluffs this winter given how saturated the sediment and stratigraphy is. This made the 4th cliff fall we have seen since March along various VA rivers.

Last weekend we went on a spontaneous trip to NC and found some cool stuff. It was quite a cold boat ride in the morning but what a great time and with good people! Thanks @SailingAlongToo for the opportunity but sucks you had to work. It was good to see Theresa back out and about and hanging out with @Daleksec . Hopefully the pictures are decent. Found an epic poo and finally got my full theropod tooth!!
