  1. Hi all. I'm looking to hang/display some small fossil pieces (most under 5 inches) and, based on what I've read, Rikers boxes are recommended for that. I asked for a 16x12.75x.75" case for Christmas. I like the size (actually need something deeper), but they don't feel super sturdy and the lid is secured by two clips that you have to completely remove to open it. What Rikers boxes (or other display cases) do you recommend for hanging "framed" fossils on a wall? Specific links would be the most helpful.
  2. Have you helped your kids or grandkids put together a Fossil Collection for School? Do you have any pictures? Please share!!!
  3. Hello everyone ! I wanted to ask you where I could find "silhouette" images of the species to put on labels for my collection. I am in fact making an inventory and cataloging all my fossils and I would like to create labels on the style that I am attaching to you at the bottom. Is there a site or any stock images of this type? From the images it would seem that they all belong to the same "style". Thank you in advance and have a nice week!
  4. I find skulls one of the most interesting pieces of fossil you can ever own. So here I'd love to see all of your fossil skulls, or parts of one. Here is my Pleistocene era skull of a Ursus arctos. An ice age brown bear. Very very uncommon find.
  5. Share your favourite ICE AGE era fossils, I love to collect them myself This is my favourite fossil: Coelodonta antiquitatis lower jaw Length: 42CM Weight: 3,557KG Location: Permafrost, Siberia
  6. Here is a view of my green river formation collection. Most of these fish were found at @sseth's quarry, American Fossil. First up is my prize fish, a partial Eohiodon I also have this Priscacara that I've been on and off prepping. A piece of wood from the split fish layer. A partial Phareodus from the split fish layer A (i think fairly rare) stingray barb that had come out of the matrix A Knightia that also has a partial crocodile tooth in the matrix that I had removed. And a view of the whole collection
  7. Let’s see everyone’s rarest fossil specimen(s). Time for a lot of envy!
  8. Theres no way I'm the only one, but I think a fossil display with models incorporated take display and immersion to the next level. The creature alongside the evidence it left behind, makes such museum like feel in appearance and enhances the appreciation and wonder. Heres a thread to post any fossils you have on display alongside a model, statue, or toy. Here is a display from my collection of one of my favorite prehistoric creatures postosuchus alongside a giant 10inch+ chirotherium pos/neg footprint.
  9. Hello everyone, I'd like to share my extreme budget collection of exotic megs/shark teeth so far, I've have been collecting shark teeth and other for a little over a year and a half now on an extremely tight budget and have been surprised by what I was able to get a hold of so far. Condition doesn't bother me hence the budget but I have been able to find some megs from from interesting locations over the short period of time I've been collecting with a little bit of luck. Locations include Puerto Rico, Cuba, Japan, Hawaii, Morocco, Mexico, Peru, and The Phillipines. Anyone else out there with extreme budget rare finds especially shark teeth (or from generally exotic locations), feel free to share and I'd love to see! In order of pictures: 1) Two megs and a hemi from Isabella, Puerto Rico 2) meg from Hawaii (Restored) 3) great white from Japan 4) meg from Morocco 5) meg from Cuba (unfortunately stuck on a wood plate but still a lovely display piece) 6) meg from the Phillipines 7) cubutensis from Peru 8) 2 Makos from Mexico 9 & 10) Heavily and horribly restored 5.9 inch Chilean meg (funny story with this one had an even worse restoration on it with made it look no different from a replica, was suspicious and bought it and when attempting a horrible derestoration process and a few slight touch ups of my own a large chilean meg was hiding under the mess, still needs a tad bit of work but I still love I was able to snag a large one cheap in this day and age ) @WhodamanHD Here we go uploaded !
  10. I'm running out of room on my little shelf, so I was curious how you guys display YOUR fossils! I could use some ideas, as well as an excuse to see your guys's awesome collections!

    databases

I want to start an actual computer database for my collection. I want to find a free downloadable database. Does anyone out there have any input? At work I use FileMaker Pro. I designed the database for our collections and it works well, but it costs 500 plus bucks (300 for academic use, which is what we paid). I do not want to pay that sort of money, or any if possible. I looked into Specify, but they seem to be only for actual museums and not for home collections, or so it seems on the download page. What, if anythng do you folks use?
  12. The title was blunt to the point, & I was thinking. Let's hope this is far away, but still the fact is not going away. Ok we all know we have a passion for certain things here & have a collection going on. I'm curious what is others plan for their collection, once .........gone ? I know the simple thing is to will it to kin, though do they appreciate it ? And would they pawn it off as soon as they get ? I would assume if over time if need be you'd sell off to pay bills etc... Though what if your kin is not so much into your collection & you were not able to sell it off. Do you will it to a museum where many people can appreciate it, if its of interest an worthy for that museum. Or just say I don't care where it goes I'm dead.
  13. Does anyone keep extant shark teeth in their fossil shark teeth collections for comparison and reference? Is it poor form to ask for an ID on this forum of an extant tooth to see if it is related to a fossil tooth?

    The best of.....

Hello, I am quite curious as to what your prized possessions are. You can post about 2 images. I will start with mine. My personal favorite is my Tethysaurus vertebrae, it was either this or my Keichousaurus but I felt like this was more "special" than my Keichousaurus.
  18. I’m looking for somebody to hook up and do a little bit of fossil hunting I got intrigued with this back when I was a kid and I used to do a lot of deer hunting with my dad and seen many fossils on our trips in Utah I’m now in Southern California Camarillo area anybody interested in hooking up and doing some exploring let me know
  19. I found a unique fossil cluster. It has a bone cemented into it! It has barnacles, and it's formed on a Jefferson Scallop. I found it in Virginia, United States.
  20. The Fossil Forum has reached an important milestone: we now have 1,000 fossils with pictures and descriptions in our collections section. We beat our fellow paleontology website MyFossil to the 1,000 mark even though they had a big head start; they started in November 2014 while we started last September. Check out the quality fossils and posts at MyFossil: http://www.myfossil.org/. I encourage everyone to help create the best online digital collection of fossils in the world. Take a look at your best fossils and see if we could use a picture of it in our digital fossil collection. I have seen a lot of fossils in FF posts that are worthwhile to add to our collection.
