A seemingly simple question with an answer I can't seem to find. How were the colors for the Geologic Time Scale decided? Recently I created a quick Geologic Time Scale to scale, shown below, and got curious as to how those colors were decided. Who decided yellow and orange would represent the Cenozoic or purple to represent the Triassic. Were they all decided at the same time by the same person or were they chosen over time? Did a single paper attempt to standardize all geologic maps by creating the color code we know today? And for how long have these colors been decided? There are probably many different color systems but the one I'm most interested in, is the one the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) has here.

Hey everybody. Ive ran into some opalized belemnites that I bought about 25 years ago. I don't know what kind of lighting is best to show the colors of them? I did a google search and got everything under the sun except for what I was looking for. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much RB

I know that what determines fossil color is the chemical composition of the rock, but why the many colors in this coral fossil I found today? It's especially noticeable on the top and bottom of the fossil. Anyway, I'm curious. EDIT: Oh, and upon further cleaning I noticed it sparkles.... the mystery deepens haha

I have a fondness for fossil teeth that have unusual coloes to them. I think it would be nice to see some of Yours. Any type of tooth will do as long as it has atypical color(s) to it. Here are a few from My Sharktooth hill finds.... A porpoise tooth.. And some shark teeth (front and back views... Looking forward to seeing what Y'All have! Tony

I am always looking for backgounds to use when taking pictures of various sizes of fossils. A while back I was walking through my local home improvement center and I walked back the paint section. There I noticed all of the different sizes (8" by 10", 4" by 5", 3" by 3") and colors of swatches, and they are all free for the taking. If you ever have an issue with glare when taking pictures, try a different color swatch.

Once again found this in our creek in Michigan . It's Very different from the others I have found. It has different layers on one side, and the other side looks bumpy but isn't. What could this be? Thanks once again.
