Hi everyone, I have this opal bivalve for around a year now I think, but I didn't really bother to look for an ID before. But I recently ordered an opal belemnite so I am thinking on making some new ID cards and I would like to make one for this bivalve as well The bivalve was found in the Bulldog Formation,Coober Pedy, Australia (Early Cretaceous, 135 mya) I am not sure if the photo's are clear enough, but it is the typical bivalve you see often from Coober Pedy, just can't find anything on them. My wife Tammy and I have been touring Australia for our anniversary (we chose Australia as our honeymoon destination oh so many years ago). Part of our tour of the southern and western parts of Australia that we didn't have time to visit on our first visit is a side trip from Adelaide—Coober Pedy. We'd read articles and seen television shows about this quirky mining down in the outback of Australia—midway between Adelaide and Alice Springs in the red center. We decided that we couldn't pass up a chance to visit such a unique place. I started a posting with some photos in another thread so anybody reading this topic might catch-up on our trip through this link: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/46914-nature-photography/&do=findComment&comment=731419 We had a chance to tour a working opal mine which also supplements their income by schlepping in busloads of tourists to the non-operational portions of the mine for tours (and sometimes lunches underground in some of the larger dugout rooms). We got a more personal tour with just the two of us. Pretty cool to see the vacuum devices invented in Coober Pedy for sucking out the mullock (loose matrix) from the working face of the drive (horizontal working tunnel). The textures inside the mine made by the automated excavation machinery provide an interesting effect on the multicolored stone. Cheers. -Ken
