Found this on the surface in a small area of exposed layered greenish and purple decomposing sedimentary rock at the base of Comb Wash west of Blanding, Utah. The layers of rock were below a steep cliff and of Wingate sandstone and I assume the time period to be Triassic but I could be off by a few hundred million years. The fossil is a clump of round nodules approximately 5mm in diameter. They have raised lines separating the balls. It could be a clump of seeds compacted in a dinosaur's gut and defecated or maybe fossilized soft tissue like lung alveoli. Thoughts and questions are very much welcome!

Hi again. I have no idea about this rock that I found on the Beach at Lyme Regis. It stood out initially due to the unusual colour. It is rusty brown, whereas all the surrounding material was grey or shale. I thought it was manmade before further inspection showed up fossil rocks embedded into it. Then there are layers that look like wood, but stones would not be in wood. I thought maybe a coprolite, but not like any coprolite I have ever seen. Can anyone help identify this? so I can keep or discard it, as it's quite big. Thanks, Jes.

Strange unidentified fossils. I live in an area where Ordovician fossils are most common.

Here are three fossils I need help identifying. I found one from last year's summer and two from a couple years ago. Here is a possible goniatite/gastropod. Sorry for the bad quality of the images, but if you look close enough, there is a small ammonite-like shape that has been crushed. I'll see if I can get better pictures if you guys ask in the comments. Right beside the larger one is a smaller one that is facing opposite too it. Both are really flat and their spirals doesn't go all the way in. Their outlines are very hard to notice, not sure if this is a fossil or just some rock formation. A twisting cylindrical fossil that branches into two. It has cracks and resembles very much a coprolite. Might be a rock formation, but I don't think so. Sorry for the bad quality pictures. A little round cone with lines all over it coming from the tip. It is round and underneath it there are more lines coming from the outside. If you guys could identify these fossils I would be very grateful because I could not. I would be glad if these were what I assume they are because they are very rare in my area.- 4 replies

Been working on my fossil ID skills. Need help ruling these in or out, please.

I live North of Portland along the West side of the Willamette river. The house we bought last spring has the most amazing river rock used for the landscaping. As a rock hound I was in heaven. Agates, picture jasper, jade and all kinds of beauties. I also have a lot of petrified wood and bone fragments. I have been finding some possible fossils and have struggled to ID them. Hoping someone might help me rule these in or out as fossils. That will greatly help me classify the things I am finding here at my house.- 2 replies

Hi all, I found an odd, almost perfectly round ball in the desert. At first I thought it was an old ball bearing, but it's not metal. Maybe a coprolite? Or just an average rock that happens to be round... It's 15mm in diameter, found in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. I've found other fossils in the area including petrified wood and brachiopods. Thanks for any assistance, Tekk

Picked this up on the foreshore on Mappleton beach (Holderness Coast, East Yorkshire, United Kingdom). I thought it looked like a poo and wondered if it was indeed a coprolite?

Hello dear forum members, among the collection of my late uncle there was a box of coal fossils, most of which are flat crumbly pieces of plant material. I left most of these in their protective wrappings for now. among the fragments on the bottom of the box I found some nodules, I think these caught my uncles eye and where collected on the same trip as the plant fossils. (from Germany, hard coal, not lignite, thats all I know). The nodules are heavy like ore minerals (pyrite comes to mind) There is one with an interesting texture. Maybe a coprolite?? @GeschWhat? Will post more plant fossils another day, probably after we move in july. Is paraloid adequate for crumbly coal?

Hi! I’ve had these two pieces for about 45 years. I figure it’s time for a better I.D.. I bought both of these in a little rock shop outside of rapid city. Both are supposed to be from s.d. The first piece is supposed to be dinosaur….

I thought I had seen the whole gamut of shapes and materials from the Lee Creek mine spoils, but this tiny (2cm) specimen has me stumped. It looks like a tiny brain with “folds” radiating away from a central seam. The “bottom” has a deeper seam, like the meeting of two halves of a walnut. I have found blocks of milky amber in North Carolina before, but nothing with any symmetry. if it’s a coprolite, what’s the seam? Could it be a little skull cast? I have been staring at this thing for a year. Please help. Frank

I'm not quite comfortable with the possible IDs offered for these three fossils. Again, I sincerely thank anyone who chimes in with even a guess. A0003 -- Myalinella sp. or other bivalve, or something else? It has been suggested this is a Coprolite. C0004 -- Lycopod leaf upper end both halves? The part that looks like Coprolite has a "peanut shell" pattern in the hollow of the half on the right. C0085 -- Cyperites? I'm not convinced. Not comfortable with the taper. Perhaps a spine, either plant, arthropod or marine?

Hi everyone. I went to Calvert Cliffs last week & found an interesting piece of bone. I have dozens of bone fragments from the Bay, but almost all of them are linear. This one is much more rounded. It is slightly bigger than a quarter. It might be too small to identify, but I thought it was worth sharing. It doesn't look turtle-y to me, but I guess that is a possibility.

I've started finding these on my East Texas property recently. Pictures of two different rocks are attached. One of the forms in the rocks is crystallized. Picked up off the ground where there's iron ore and hematite. Your feedback is appreciated.

Hey all! Just found this forum after looking for a place to identify this: I'm hoping to find enough of you to disprove or prove that this is or is not coprolite. If not, that's okay too, but damned if it doesn't look like a dino turd to me!

Hi! I'm new here and new to the fossil world. My husband and myself love going to the beach and looking for interesting finds. 2 years ago we found this odd glittery nugget on a beach Dorset, UK and I simply took it as I found it special. Placed it in our collection box and forgot about it. It seems that it cracked in the meantime as it fully dried out and it became easier to crack open. It is quite heavy for its size.. I have no idea what it is and it made me very curious, as I recently read about coprolites. Could this one be a coprolite? I will try and attach a photo where you could see the original shape. Thank you!! This community is amazing!
