  2. Hi guys I decided to rescue and acquire a new unlabelled specimen. It appears to be a rugose solitary coral that can possibly come from the Devonian of south western Ontario. Can anyone give me any leads on the species level??
  3. Hi guys so today I came across a new shop that popped up in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. Anyway long story short I bought what appears to be Silurian coral fossil that originated somewhere on the Niagara Escarpment in Ontario or the State of New York. This fossil came from a peculiar museum that liquidated its collections in Niagara of Ontario and closed but the fossil didnt come with a label. Can anyone help me pin down what it is? I have never encountered a fossil like this on the Niagara Escarpment of Hamilton, Ontario. Also this was being sold along with other/what appears to be Silurian corals from the local area of the Niagara region of Ontario/New York.

    Upper Devonian Rugosa ID

    Hello guys I collected this Rugosa coral from the Upper Devonian of Charouine, located in the Ougarta ranges, Algeria. I wonder if someone can help ID the genus and species properly! I appreciate your efforts.
  5. This all started over a year ago. I was selected as Member of the Month and a couple of TFF members from Texas invited me down to the big state to collect. I primarily collect in my home region, the northeast, but I've taken fossil forays to New Mexico, Kentucky, and Germany and was willing to consider a trip to Texas and the opportunity to visit some classic fossil sites and collect fossils that are outside my usual focus. I began planning this about ten months ago, contacted potential fossil collecting partners and did my own research on fossil sites, geology, and the types of fossils I would likely encounter. I had never been to Texas let alone fossil collected there. From the Forum I knew there was a lot of great hunting. Then there was all of the logistics, what to stay, what to bring. Since I wanted to bring back a lot driving appeared to be my best option, but I hadn't driven that far solo in over thirty years. Timing of my trip; mid-late September, came right after my daughter went away to college and I was in the middle of moving to a new place. So things couldn't have been more hectic. Finally, early in the morning on September 8th I set out. Things went okay until I was in Kentucky. Just as it was turning nightfall, torrential rain hit, traffic was stopped on the interstate for two and a half hours, and the last two hours of the trip I struggled with wet conditions and poor visibility. I finally arrived at my parents' house just after one in the morning. The next day on my way over to my sister's I took a small detour and stopped at an outcrop I was well familiar with in Leitchfield, the Upper Mississippian Glen Dean Formation.

    Osha Canyon Formation

    Visiting the Osha Canyon Formation in the Jemez Mountains, New Mexico. Upper part of the formation. The massive sandstone is the Sandia Formation. Underneath is the Pennsylvanian Osha Canyon Formation. FInds: Crinoid stem segments, a rugose coral, a couple of echinoderm plates, and a worm burrow cast. Whole bed of brachiopods: Composita brachiopods? I was shown this site by a semi-professional geologist who calls it The Nursery because there are huge numbers of unusually small brachiopods. Spirifers? some are silicified

    A few Fossils from recently

    Hello everyone, thanks for letting me join the site! I'm an amateur fossil hunter from Toronto who has made a few expeditions in the past months. I've found a few fossils of interest that I'd like some help identifying. Below are links to photos of the fossils in question on my iNaturalist page, along with some additional details. A piece of vegetation?   10. Taking advantage of my time spent home, I finally got a couple of glass display cases to showcase fossil specimens from my collection. Finding ones that were affordable and blended with the style of our home, was challenge, and I took my time choosing. Despite a bit of criticism I receive from some of my fossil collecting friends, I am a generalist collector who doesn't specialize in anything. Having said that, my collection does feature some rare faunas; Devonian and Cretaceous bivalves, Lower and Middle Devonian brachiopods and gastropods, Cretaceous vertebrates, etc. The focus is largely on fossils of the Northeast (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, and Eastern Canada), but a number of trips to the Ohio Valley, Texas, out west, and Germany have expanded my collection which is about 90% self collected with remaining fossils primarily gifts from generous friends. There is only one purchased fossil in the display and one I traded for. I ended up with twelves shelves- ten devoted to animal life (seven of those are invertebrates), and two for plants. I was seeking to emulate the old style of specimen display that one might encounter in a 19th century museum, when displaying specimens was the priority. I didn't and couldn't display my entire collection which is too large, so I picked representative specimens to tell the story of the vast variety of prehistoric life on earth. Some of my best specimens didn't make it into the display. These are the cases which are situated in our finished basement:

    Please Help Identify these fossils

    I have lived on this property in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee for over 35 years. I have been noticing these fossils while working in a shade garden on the property. I believe they are some form of fossilized coral. I tried to find help in the Audubon Society Field Guide and by searching on line, but did not find anything that completely matched my samples. I have selected several pieces that I hope my help identify the fossils. The pieces I have found are usually 1-1 1/2" inches in diameter, and somewhat spherical. Many of the colonies are shaped like a 5 pointed star and appear in somewhat parallel rows. I have found only one example that has geodized. Please excuse my ignorance that prevents me from entering a more specific description. I hope the photographs will help.

  13. I found this in a sand pit near Kalkaska Michigan as a kid. It was in the vally wall around lake Skegamog. Next to it were a number of sand stones containing shell fossils. I don't know if it matters, but the pit wall I dug into was about 75 feet below the undisturbed grade. The stone I believe to be a sponge is approximately nine inches tall and weighs approximately 9.5 pounds. The chamber's are not uniform in size so I doubt it's being coral. The fact that there were no igneous rocks present makes me doubt pumice. I apologize that I could put up more pictures and close ups, but there was a limit on the upload size.

    Back to the Ohio Valley

    Hi Everyone, I took a 2 week trip to the Ohio Valley, arriving back in New York about a week ago. It was primarily a family visit since many of my relatives now reside in the Elizabethtown, KY area. However, the Ohio Valley, as some of you know, is very rich in Paleozoic fossils and I just had to make a few stops on my way there and back as well as between family engagements. I will try to share enough to give you all a gist of it: It was a long day's drive from the northern suburbs of New York City to Richmond, Indiana where I spent the first night. The next day I was headed down State Road 101 to Garr Hill, to collect in the Upper Ordovician Liberty Formation. It was my first time at the site and everything I found was collected from loose rocks at or near the base of the outcrop. A couple of pictures:
  15. Corals Fossil found in a base camo when I climbed mountain at an elevation of 3200 metres, to ID~ The corals looks like Liangshanophyllum or waagenophyllum but not quick match the character of Tetracoralla~ Also some Mollusks, maybe Amphineura?

  17. Spring of 2020 We took advantage of the time off and the break in weather to hunt one of our favorite streams here in Western New York. This was just a spring scouting mission to see what was exposed after the ice and snow has melted. Some of the more interesting finds were a crinoid crown (very rare for this locality) possibly Logocrinus, Spinocyrtia granulosa open with both valves, Orthospirifer marcyi, a large Megastrophia concava cleaned by nature with epibionts, and 3 small nearly complete Greenops. We also found many small Favosites coral colonies, large Heliophyllum corals, and 8 different species of brachiopods. Happy Collecting!
  18. A new study shows that stony corals, which provide food and shelter for almost a quarter of all ocean species, are preparing for a major extinction event. Researchers identified an increased prevalence of certain traits found with previous extinction-survival characteristics among corals. By studying the fossil record of coral skeletons, they were able to determine that corals are showing some survival traits that match the last major extinction event 66mya. These traits include an increase in deep water residence, cosmopolitan distributions, smaller colonies, non-symbiotic relationship to algae and higher resistance to bleaching. The study also discusses in detail the comparison to primates and discusses how primates don't show the same survival characteristics that some corals do.   19. Hello! Finally, I have some time to post this fossil hunting trip from a warm and sunny day in October, 2019. Introduction The Miocene Styrian basin in Austria is mostly filled with various clastic sediments, e.g. fossil-rich “Florianer Schichten” around St. Josef. The “Mittelsteirische Schwelle”, a north-south trending high-zone of palaeozoic, slightly metamorphic rocks, however, is, in a very literal sense, the base of various biogenic carbonate rocks (“Leithakalk”). The individual carbonate bodies are of slightly different age – spanning the whole Badenian (about three Million years) - and composition. The younger ones to the north around Wildon are characterized by coralline algae and often oncoidic limestones, corals are extremely rare there. To the south, corals became locally an important part of the limestones, besides the coralline algae. No really big coral reef structures have developed, though; coral carpets and small coral batch reefs are characteristic. These corals are witness of tropical to subtropical temperatures in this area about 15 Million years ago. Coral development is considered to depend on local factors like sediment input or (non-)exposure to severe wave action during storms. Coral diversity is relatively high, with at least a dozen of genera described or mentioned. About four years ago, I have prospected the area north of Heimschuh several times for corals. My goal was to find some good coral sites. Fossils in the wild are not super-abundant in this formation, but I succeeded to find a few good spots. Corals are by far the most abundant fossil group, bivalves etc. are much rarer. (Note: there is a very large, active quarry for portland cement fabrication in Retznei nearby, that is famous for all kind of marine stuff, incl. Meg teeth and other large vertebrates.) I will present two sites that I have visited again at 10/17/2019, but already also four years ago. One is at Kittenberg in the woods (1), the other one is a small outcrop along a minor road called “Hötzlweg” (2). Continued...
  20. I bought a new old cabinet last winter and spent several months filling it with newly labeled specimens, most of them now stored in jewelry boxes. I took photos of it to show Tim, Fossildude19 and he suggested I post them in the Members Collections section. I followed his suggestion. The collection started in 2011 with a few fossil purchases off a well known public auction site. By the early spring of 2012 I was collecting in the field and the vast majority of my collection was self collected in that manner from sites, primarily in the Northeast and Ohio Valley as well as ones collected on trips to Texas, Germany and out west. There are also some gift specimens that I own thanks to the generosity of a number of friends, most of whom are on the Forum. The top of the cabinet is occupied by miscellaneous specimens, some that wouldn't fit in the drawers, some slated to be in a glass display case I hope to eventually get, and my collection of fossils found in New Jersey just above the Iridium Layer.

    Coral crazy

    Today I was pretty stressed out, but it was also my day off work so I figured what better to do than go out for a hike. Usually around this time of the year Truman Lake's water level drops, and more spots are accessible to hunt for treasures or to journey and site see. I wasn't looking for fossils but instead I was looking for fishing lures, (You'd be amazed how many you can find when the water drops) but I always keep an eye out for fossils as well. I ended up finding a nice little exposure that is usually underwater, and boy it was worth the search. It was about a hour and a half walk to where the exposure was from my car, and I didnt have long to search before the sun set. I probably had a good 40 minutes of sunlight to search and came up with a lot. So much infact, I still have a lot of cleaning to do! Some of the solitary and colonial rugose corals are geodized, or have lovely crystal lining on the inside. I didnt get to take many pictures which I regret, and my few pictures don't do the lovely crystalized coral justice. I suppose I'll share a final photo when I get everything cleaned up.
  22. I am back from my trip to morocco. It is a 14 days trip and I got 4 days for fossil hunting. It was so imagine, fossils are everywhere and even though I won't be able to dig, I still get plenty to bring home. Since my guide doesn't speak good English, I am not be able to ask him must so I need help to identify the fossil. On the first day, my guide took me to a place near Erfoud to search for dinosaur teeth. It is very close to the highway. We found a well that the local people dig to get Spinosaur teeth and bone. My husband went down to one but couldn't find anything because the well is new and it is not deep enough. We didn't want to try the deeper one so we decide to bought some spinosaur teeth from the local people there. This tooth is a little over 4.5 inches and I think there are some prepare but I can't tell how much. I also bought 3 smaller teeth and was giving the broken one which I don't know what it is.

    Cretaceous corals

    Hi everyone. Here are some specimens from an Upper Campanian - Lower Maastrichtian reef in the Catalan Pyrenees, which species’ diversity amazes me. In fact, they are collected in a 30 meter-radius point. I’ve only been able to approximate their genus (thanks to @Pachy, mostly) . So, I’ll strongly appreciate any help. Well, let’s start with the tiniest ones: Heliopora sp. (=Polytremacis), an Octocorallian: Columactinastrea sp.: Synastrea ? (Only my guess)
