    Large fossil identification help

These were found in a North MS creek. The cut of the creek is down to the hardpan and fifteen feet below ground level. There were numerous fractures on and beyond the exposed portions of the fossils. To accommodate for this and to maintain their integrity, both of them were removed along with hard pan, as a shelf. The smaller of the two fossils was found less than an inch away from the main body. As with the larger fossil, it was fractured and fell into four pieces--the nub, the main body, a shoot, and a tip--and these can be seen in the lower right and the upper left corners, respectively. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

    Unknown Gainesville Creek Fossils

Hello everyone, I recently went fossil hunting in Rattlesnake Creek of Gainesville, Florida (Late Miocene) and uncovered many different fossils but three of them I am unsure of the identity of them. I believe one may be a type of vertebrae, but the others I can not place. The creek is shallow, relatively fast moving with a sandy bottom but many areas where gravel, fossils and stones accumulate. The first 4 pictures are of the same fossil, the next 3 of the the second, and the last 3 pictures of the last fossil. I would appreciate any attempts to help identify. Thank you very much!

    Trilobite?

I found this around 2 years ago in a creek in North Alabama. I'm pretty sure it's a partial trilobite but I'm not sure.

    Unknown bone

So was in one of my usual ditches where I usually find whale bones, and shark teeth varying from Angustidens to Megs. Came across the strange bone that to me looks like a beak of a bird or something. The strange formations or cup like pattern is what threw me off. Found 25 miles inland from Charleston SC and guessing Miocene, Chandler Bridge formation. Any ideas?
  5. My sons and I went out to Catoma Creek to look for cretaceous fossils yesterday. We got some nice sea urchins. My sons have great eyes and can find the little bitty shark teeth that I can't see... but I lucked out and saw this one sticking point first out of the dirt. Is this a goblin shark or what? I was really happy to see it, is the biggest one we have found at this site so far.
  6. Here is a very nice little gastropod fossil I found in a creek about 10 miles east of Dallas recently. Once I washed it off well I was shocked by the detail, and even colored stripes! Can anybody give me more info on this? I will post it to the Gallery with more info. Is it very common to see color in fossilized gastropods? Thanks again! KP

    Mazon Creek: Round 2

Hi all, I recently worked up the nerve to hit mazon again. I have some suspicions on what a couple of these might be but was wondering what other people thought. 1 2 3 4
  8. My son found this in a creek LOADED with cretaceous fossils (shells, sea uchins, shark teeth). Is this a fossil or just a rock?

    SC Lowcountry fun

Thought I posted into this discussion earlier but instead slapped it into the SC forum. Heres all the pics from a recent walk I took in a creek after Irma's rains roller through. Couldn't do much in the way of digging, shoulder injury wasnt having any lifting going on. So I took a nice walk, enjoyed nature, and found some teeth along the way (along with a baby copperhead, some friendly turtles, and one squirrel that decided to follow me around). Anyway, scored a beauty of an Angustiden, horse tooth, ray mouth plate, small megs, makos, small verts, just a little bit of everything. Sorry for all the insitu pics, im a sucker for em.......

  24. Here's our finds from two trips this month (9/3 & 24). When Mrs. Beachbum and I want to go out for a couple of hours, we head up to Gainesville to our go to creek. It's not very wide, maybe 4' tops, and it's pretty shallow ,a couple of inches. If you want a work out, this is the creek to go to. It has plenty of sand , a few gravel bars, limestone close to the surface and a few spots that are knee deep. Working a long handle shovel through the sand to get to the gravel in this creek is hit or miss. These last two trips have been a hit for us as you can see. We ended up with some really nice finds. A whale vert, whale tooth ( thanks to macrophyseter and fifbrindacier for the id) , deer tooth ( thanks to harry pristis for the id) , a nice mako, a bunch of hemi's , my best meg to date from this creek, pieces of ray barbs and more. Who says you can't enjoy the outdoors while tooth hunting.

    Mississippi Cretaceous period

I found the following samples today in northeastern Mississippi at the Cretaceous park site. I'm curious what the little fossilized designs in item 1 are. And I'm thinking item 3 may be a tooth of sorts? I also found this tooth and was wondering if it was a modern deer tooth, or fossilized something? Does anyone have any advice on how to tell?
