    Kem Kem Pterosaur and Fish Teeth?

    Hi all, Wondering if you could help me identify these teeth found from the Kem Kem group. The top row I believe are Pterosaur teeth (am I correct in saying that they can only be identified as Ornithocheirid indets.?) The second row, I'm not too sure. Could they be fish? Thanks in advance, Josh

  3. Hello, Just wanted to ask for opinions on whether this is a female mosquito in Burmese Amber? I’ve attached some pictures below and closeup (best quality I can get) From what I’ve been told, this particular mosquito is a female using the branched antennae to identify it as a female. Males have a much more plumose (feather-like) antennae. Female mosquitoes are known for drawing blood to produce their eggs, hence this mosquito would have been capable of drawing blood. Please note its long proboscis it would have used to draw blood. It also has fine hairs on its wings characteristic of true mosquitoes (aids in producing the buzzing sound). And also that novices may sometimes mistake some gnats and midges for mosquitoes. A closer examination will reveal the differences. Male mosquitoes have very plumose (feather-like) antennae and do not bite; they feed on nectar and other plant juices. Females have only a few short hairs on the antennae and with their long proboscis are blood-sucking. Appreciate any opinions, thanks in advance!

    Help on ID for Lance Formation Fossils

    Hello, I've got some fossils from Niobrara County, Wyoming in the Lance Formation that need some ID if its possible. The scale bar is in inches (top) and centimeters (bottom). Thank you for your time. #1 I'm confident is a skull piece but I was wondering if anyone knew what bone or perhaps what group of animals it belongs to? I see a hole on the inner side that was most likely a passage for a vein, and there are smaller holes on the outside as well. I'm hoping it's identifiable because one of the edges is not broken and is natural. #2 At first I thought was warped gar scale. After cleaning it however, I found that it seems to have an articulation point on the end. I haven't seen any gar scales like that and I'm wondering if it's another fish I'm not aware of. Or maybe its not a scale at all?
  5. Late last year I received some micro matrix from @Notidanodon that he collected from the Isle of Wright (UK) out of the Greensand Fm. near Yaverland. This material is Lower Cretaceous, Albian aged. I have picked through much of it and have some questions on what I have found. I am not well versed in the fauna from this area and some internet searching has led me to some suggestions, but I'm hoping Will or some of our more experienced collectors from this area such as @Welsh Wizard, @Yoda, @Bobby Rico, and any others that I cant think of off the top of my head, can set me straight. #1. One of the more common (relative term) items I found were these small teeth that belong to some Chondrichthyian, but I am not sure which one. My first guess, based on what little bit I'm familiar with, was some sort of Sclerorhynchidae but I had some doubts due to a total absence of a root on these, then I saw some Hybodontidae (Lonchidion/Lissodus) were found in this formation and some looked similar but not exactly the same, and then otheers reminded me of some Rajiformes with the small lingual face that you can see on some of them. So here I am. They were relatively common so I'm sure someone will recognize them right off, even if the pictures are not ideal. These are about 2-4 mm at their widest. There could be several different types in here, so if you can just get me started with a genus or group, or want close-ups of a particular one, just let me know. #2. Next up are a bunch of shark teeth partials, most are probably too worn or fragmentary to ID, so that's OK. I just wanted to show what else was in the sample. Again, total width of the container is 2cm, so these are all less than 4mm. #3. I believe these to be a fish scale and found many references to Lepidotes, now known as Sheenstia, from this section and they look somewhat similar, so I just would like to confirm that. The largest one has a max. dimension of just under 5mm. #4. These are some other small teeth that may of may not be identifiable. 2-3mm #5. Next up is a small jaw fragment. I know it needs cleaned up some more, but it is somewhat fragile and I didn't want to poke at it too much just yet. Is this fish, something else, or impossible to say? Length is about 4mm. #6. And finally, some fish vertebrae. Again, no ID requested, just wanted to show what else was in the mix. I know reptiles and amphibians are found in this formation, I'm not sure I'm qualified to try and separate those out, especially since may of these are highly phosphatized (is that a word?).     New Jersey Nodosaur Osteoderm

    Recently I visited paleontologist Ralph Johnson. Ralph gave a tour of the MAPS (Monmouth Amateur Paleontologists Society) collection and shared his extensive knowledge of New Jersey Paleontology. I also brought a few of my finds from the late Cretaceous of New Jersey hoping Ralph could identify them. One of which was a piece of bone with an interesting texture and shape. Ralph identified this piece as the second nodosaur osteoderm found in New Jersey. We compared it with a cast of Ralph’s nodosaur scute and it was a match. Here are some photos of this specimen. I'm thrilled to have this piece identified.

    Mystery Fossil Need ID

    This ‘fossil’ was found on a river gravel bar in Southern Minnesota. Sedimentary layers in the area include Wisconsin lobe glacial till and cretaceous mudstone/sandstone. The centre of this specimen seems to be just sedimentary material that is slightly harder than the surrounding material filling the core. The outer shell seems to be rock. I am totally stumped. eems to be rock. I am totally stumped.
  8. Hey y'all! I am a geology/paleontology student at Texas A&M and I am researching the Austin Chalk. I was wondering if anyone had any good Austin localities near the Waco/Temple area or anywhere near 35 all the way up to Dallas. I’ve researched a few old papers and found a couple of spots but I figured this forum could be a good outcrop resource as well. Would love some help! Thanks so much.

    Cretaceous Shark Tooth?

    Anybody can identify this Tooth? Found in cretaceous, turonian sandy-limestone in Poland (Tyniec, Cracow). I think it's a Shark Tooth, or other fish but I don't know which exactly.

    We have a nice fliy in our collection, coming from lower cretaceous of Liaoning-Region / CN. Really from an old collection..., got it from a dealer who importet it around 1980. I am a bit unsure what it is..., think it might be a plecoptera, but.. Does someone has a name for it? thanks

    Hi friends, I went to Aruma formation area (Campanian-Maastrichrtian) to the Norht of Riyadh city and found this large fossil , 16cm long by13cm what could it? it looks like a T-rex tooth !
  18. As a later summer vacation we decided to do a road trip - Tour de France. France having many interesting destinations and things to do and collecting fossils would be one of them. As we usually don’t plan our trips beyond a few days ahead also the fossil locations were decided on the road. But when reading about Carniol it became clear it was one we had to include. Other non fossil highlights of the trip were Bordeaux, the Pyrenees, Toulouse (great museum of natural history), Lyon and of course Pont du Gard. When finding out about Carniol I did some further reading on how to get there. Apparently the French drive on the very bad (not true) roads to get there like madman (true) at 90 km/h (sometimes true), the cliffs and canyons are very scary (not after the Pyrenees) and parking was also going to be a challenge (it was easy). Carniol is a tiny village and probably the fossil sites are it’s main tourist attraction although calling Carniol touristic is probably very far from reality. Near the village there are two places where the fossil rich clay is exposed and can be easily reached from the road (50-100m walk). The grey clay can be recognised from a distance so it didn’t take us long to get at the site (we only visited the western one but they are supposed to be similar). We were lucky that there was heavy rain in the days before our visit as this exposes the fossils. The downside is that the clay is very sticky and heavy and it forms a plateau under your shoes. As mentioned before the fossils are washed out of the clay and you just need to pick them up. Unfortunately larger fossils are poorly conserved and some nice pieces crumbled after picking them up. But the small fossils are many and diverse. We found lots of what we recognised like Ammonites including heteromorphs, belemnites, gastropods and bivalves like this. As I read that taking some of the clay for washing was of interest (we didn’t prepare for this) we filled an empty 5 liter water container with clay. As we had an appointment for dinner in Lyon and we were satisfied with our finds we left after about two hours. But the rest of the vacation I kept thinking about starting to wash and sort our finds. Back home it became obvious we had some nice finds even before finishing sorting everything. A big tooth my partner picked up but she didn’t recognise as such and she didn’t tell me about (Protosphyraena with a small?). From the clay we brought home, I found a jaw fragment (identified on Reddit as Saurian). Still a lot of material to go through as for now I am just grouping the finds. In due time I hope to get some help with further identification of everything although I will give it a try myself with the information already available here and on other sites.

    Hi we are new quick snap shot father along with young son have the itch after exploring family owned creeks. Attach are a few interesting finds, we have also found coral as well as encrusted oyster shells after large rains. We are in western North carolina for reference.     Which Ptychodus?

    Hey ya'll Here's a small Ptychodus that my step brother found while we were hunting a gravel bed. Still in the matrix... you can say I'm a little jealous. I'm thinking, based off the ID guide that's pinned, that it could be mammillaris. Let me know if more or better photos are needed.

    Hadrodus hewletti (8/22/2021)

    Hadrodus hewletti was a large bony fish of the cretaceous. Finds of this variety in Hadrodus are notably uncommon. The best description I could find about Hadrodus was on the Oceans of Kansas website. Here is what they have to say about it : - "There are several things you can say about Hadrodus. Although it's not a pycnodontiform (Poyato-Ariza, F.J., and S. Wenz, 2002), it is very likely closely related to them, as shown by its deep-bodied form (seen in a partially-described Alabama specimen), the increased number and enlarged size of the vomerine and prearticular teeth, and the incisor-like anterior teeth (they're more like human incisors in pycnodonts, not as broad as in Hadrodus). Unlike pycnodontiform toothplate teeth, the teeth of Hadrodus are not arranged in regular rows, nor are some teeth especially enlarged and elongate. Hadrodus doesn't really have regular toothplates, the way pycnodonts do. The mandibular symphysis is oriented differently in the two taxa - it's nearly vertical, and anteriormost in Hadrodus, but nearly horizontal and largely medial in pycnodonts. Thurmond is probably correct to place Hadrodus in a separate family, the Hadrodontidae Thurmond, in Thurmond and Jones (1981, p. 82). Both likely ate hard-shelled prey. Both Hadrodus and the pycnodonts probably derive from the Late Jurassic/Early Cretaceous lepidotids, which were also deep-bodied bony fish, and had enlarged oral cavity teeth."
