Preparation of fragile crystallized fossils
rickeclectic posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
I have several fossils that have crystallized shells. I would like any advice on preparing the fossil without having the crystallized structure disintegrated. See example photo and the crystals structures around the edges of the spiral. Thanks. .- 6 replies

Hey! I found some crystallized dinosaur bones and wood and was wondering what makes them crystallize, and if that makes them worth more?

A customer gave me some neat fossils today, I couldn’t tell ya where they were collected unfortunately. Is the larger one a baculite? No clue on the smaller one. Larger one has crystals inside the fossil, pretty neat. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I inherited a 3 inch fossil from my father and would love to know what it is. I don't know where this fossil came from but it looks like some kind of barnacle or something similar. It is brown rock on the bottom and crystallized on top. I have attached several pictures and would be really grateful for any information. Thank you!

I've loved finding rocks and fossils my whole life. the last few months I've decided to learn more about what I'm finding. Any help would be appreciated this fossil I believe is honeycomb coral but it looks like it has turned into quartz possibly calcite. I haven't polished the piece yet it's still the way it was found.

*Disclaimer I am very new to this please explain things like I am 6 * This little guy looked almost this beautiful when I found it.. I think the ants cleaned most of the limestone off.. all I did was hand polish both sides with various grit wet sandpaper, followed by a wash with dish soap and water in an ultrasonic cleaner.. the one side still has a bit of limestone which I wasn't sure if I wanted to remove or not so I polished it.. I Was wondering what the best way to expose some more of the crystals would be? I don't know what tools or anything to use and I don't want to mess it up.. sh

Hello all, I have a find from southern New Jersey. It has many crystalized "veins" running through it, and possibly internal too having a specific gravity of 2.27.....It is not brittle and is very solid, yet lightweight. Underneath shows an off-white color spot, which may be the original color as it has iron color to it now? Any thoughts on this specimen would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking a look. P.S. - Some photos were labeled too large, so I will also provided a link to a photobucket page with more pictures. http://s935.photobucket.com/user/TheeWoodsman/library/red%20rock?
