I found a tarrant formation exposure along the trinity river, a scenic little spot that I was happy to find. In addition to my seemingly usual haul of conlinoceras ammonites (on the smaller side this time), I found a couple of neat little gastropods, gyrodes petrosa. One of them has had its shell replaced with calcite, making for a really shiny/reflective appearance. I also found a piece of petrified wood with sand still stuck to one side. I’m always amazed that we can find these ancient artifacts and we even know which side was touching the ground as it was fossilized for so long (if I’m interpreting the condition correctly). One pic shows an ammonite exactly as I found it, shouting to me “please adopt me and take me home to a warm bed!” Dallas county, this weekend.

I found this heavy, dark bone on a gravel bar along the trinity river in western Dallas County Texas. Any ideas? This little calcite-like pebble occupied the hole visible on one end. I have not performed any burn tests, litmus tests, multiple choice tests, or otherwise. I measured it, 9” long almost exactly. Roughly 1.25” wide near the center measuring across the side with the dip. Thanks in advance!

I’m hopeful that I have something special here. Hit me with your knowledge! I suspect it’s a tooth of some sort? In a creek along the eagleford/woodbine border in Dallas County, found this morning.

I made a trip to a creek in Dallas County yesterday morning. This is an Eagle Ford outcrop. I had visited this creek once before in 2020. I only found a couple of things, but one was an ammonite I was really impressed with. I had found it in the edge of the water, and wondered if this might be a better site to hunt under low water conditions. With the drought we're having right now, those low water conditions are here, so it seemed like a good time to revisit the spot. It's not a large outcrop, so I didn't worry about getting there too early. I just hunted a couple of hours, then headed home before the worst heat of the day. The fossils aren't hard to spot in today's in situ photos.

Found in creek Eagle Ford Kef and possibly some Alluvial gravels. I think I'm looking at 2 different fossils, can't really tell what belonged to who but on the whole one I'm wondering if I'm seeing a valve or two. One is about 1 inch from umbo maybe another smaller one on side. Last image is close up of what I'm thinking is valve.

I have a hard time telling if bones are fossils unless they are stone or fresh enough to scrape easily. Any help would be appreciated in learning this. Didn't take pic of end but it's hollow.

I had a job in Dallas this morning (retirement still hasn't quite taken), but finished very early, so I decided to stop by a spot that was on my list, that was only five miles or so from where I was working. Wearing jeans and a work shirt, and with a forecast high of 99 degrees today, I knew I wouldn't be staying long, but I was close to the spot, and it wasn't nearly as long a hike from where I'd park as I usually end up with, so I figured I'd take a look. This is an Eagle Ford outcrop. It's in the middle of DFW, so not exactly secret and off the beaten path, so I wasn't sure if I would find anything or not. I spent an hour checking the outcrop and nearby gravel bars, then headed for home. If I'm identifying this piece correctly, it's a burrow with a small ammonite fragment attached. Not too exotic, but it was so cool looking, I had to take it home. It almost looks like a cow skull with a small crown.
