On my recent trip to the Caloosahatchee (while waiting for the Peace River to descend a bit) a friend and I went to our favorite place, as I recounted on my recent A DAY ON THE CALOOSAHATCHEE post under the Trips section of the forum. Besides the things I can identify, I found what I think is a piece of antler, though it doesn't look like a whitetail deer antler to me, so I hope someone might be able to help ID it. I also found a small delicate scallop I was not able to ID . Over the years I found many kinds of scallops, i seem to recall seeing a similar one once in a post identifying Ft Thompson formation scallops, but can't locate that now. Any help in the little scallop would also be appreciated. And finally, we found 1 exceptional Vasum Horridum that i showed under my Trip post. The one posted here, had a few broken points, but still has cleaned up well and doesn't look as shabby as when I first found it. I these Vasum are spectacular, and the complete ones are extraordinary. (OOPS, THE VASUM IMAGES RAN PAST MY ALLOWED SPACE, SO i'LL GO BACK TO MY TRIP POST AND ADD THEM IN THERE)

This was the year of the Mammal for me. The antler piece was given to me by my friend Bill who ONLY keeps shark teeth-he also gave me the meg pieces in the previous post. The 2nd piece in the picture I can not id. Pictures 3-5 is this a deer tooth? 6/7 horse? 8/9 piece of mastodon tooth? 10/11 mammoth tooth piece, 12/13 looks like tooth material?, 14,15 looks to me to be ivory? mastodon or mammoth? 16/17 looks like the baleen groove for a baleen whale? I have a number of other large bone? pieces that i will post later as part 3 to try and see if identifiable as well as some interesting modern stuff. I did not post the bryozoan material I found either. Thanks for looking and any corrections, suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, a friend and I went out on the very low Peace River, near Wachulla last weekend. It was beautiful, We didn't find anything spectacular. I found three large but very broken Megaledon teeth, a nice 5 inch piece of deer antler including the basal spread, and these two sharks teeth that have me a bit puzzled. Besides the normal sharks here, the sand, hemipristis, great white, etc. I found these but am unsure of what they are. The first one has that unusual looking root. To me it actually looks like a baby Megaledon, but I am sure one of you will identify it in a snap....thanks. The second may be a hemipristis, from someplace in the mouth. It is the only one I have ever found like it. It is fairly smooth up the shaft to the tip, where it has those serrations. Again, one , or more of you will be able to help me out, I am sure. Though, I have now been doing this for two year and have learned much, I realize my own knowledge is like a pin scratch on a piece of glass...almost nonexistent. Thanks.
