    Hell Creek Small Theropod Claw

    Hi everyone! I wanted to post one of my new favorite finds from this past week of collecting in the Hell Creek formation of Montana. I found this little partial claw at a microsite which proved to be quite productive, making for a great day. While the articulating surface is missing, I still feel that it could be identifiable and my first guess is bird. Avisaurus in particular as I remember seeing similar claws being labeled as such on other platforms. It’s about two centimeters long and the bottom is flat, giving it a somewhat triangular cross section. photos from the field. Pics I just took from the motel. Unguals from the paper describing Mirarce, a close relative of what’s present in Hell Creek. I’d love to read some opinions.

    A Physicist's Collection

    While my prime focus is essentially learning how to accurately describe Nature in the precise language of mathematics, I've always been intrigued by natural history - it's actually what started me on the path to physics. The sort of interrogation that paleontology practices provoked me to think and question even further, down to the fundamental science which makes it all work. Collecting fossils has brought a large amount of enjoyment to my life, and is often a welcome distraction from what can sometimes be straining work. The knowledge that I accumulate along the way is also part of the fun. Here is my collection, which will always be a work-in-progress. There's still many things I haven't photographed yet, but I feel comfortable saying this is the majority. I don't have many big things, but I'm certainly pleased with the many small things I have so far. Infant Tyrannosaurus rex posterior tooth If I could keep only one fossil, it would be this one. It's from my favorite animal that has ever lived, and being from a young'un is just so darn cool. A true crowning jewel in my eyes. Juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex maxillary tooth Again, you can't go wrong with T. rex. It doesn't have the best preservation but regardless, there's a lot more to love. Tylosaurus proriger tooth (self-found) Undoubtedly my favorite find to-date. Finding fossils yourself adds that extra value to its place in your collection. I'll remember the moment I first saw it for a long time. Triceratops prorsus tooth Triceratops is another one of my favorite dinosaurs, I think we all grew up playing with toys of T. rex and Triceratops. Unique circumstances also allow for me to say it's Triceratops and not Torosaurus with some confidence. It's not perfect, but still a significant part of the collection. Avisaurus archibaldi tooth A bird tooth? Doesn't get much cooler or more uncommon. Dimetrodon cf. limbatus tooth I've always been drawn to "icons of life," since those are the ones we remember from childhood. Dimetrodon is definitely an icon, and I'm glad to have found one of these uncommon treasures (in micromatrix - it was a very nice surprise). Cretoxyrhina mantelli tooth One of my favorite shark species, the "ginsu" had sleek-looking teeth, ate mosasaurs and dinosaurs, and was overall a formidable animal worthy of admiration. Cretodus crassidens tooth (self-found) Another one of my favorite sharks. It's not big or complete, but the preservation is so rare for the locality (POC) - the gloss on the enamel is as if it fell out of the shark's mouth yesterday. Saurornitholestes langstoni tooth I'm currently working on growing the dinosaur component of my collection, and this is my first Dromaeosaurid. Dromaeosaur tooth (Hell Creek Fm.) My most recent addition (as of Sept. 4, 2021), and it's my best dinosaur tooth for sure. Unfortunately it will be labeled as only a Dromaeosaurid tooth for now, but it still is just a great tooth from a cool family of dinosaurs. Shark Tooth Riker Display I've got one riker that I've tried to squeeze as many teeth into as possible. I need to get a couple more, probably; there's a lot of teeth that deserve a riker, but are just lying around. I'll try to update this thread semi-regularly as I make acquisitions in the future.

    Dromaeosauridae (Cf. Acheroraptor temertyorum) Hell Creek Fm., Carter Co., MT, USA Acheroraptor's dentition is known incompletely, so it's possible this tooth is from Acheroraptor. Until more material is described, this tooth will remain indeterminate. There may be slight facets, but I'm not confident that's what I'm seeing.

    Acheroraptor tooth

    Identification A. temertyorum is characterized by the typical Dromaeosaurid traits (compressed, recurved, differing mc/dc serration densities), and longitudinal ridges/facets on the crown face. Notes This tooth was found this past Summer ('21), and in the same county as the holotype specimen.

    Hell creek theropod tooth

    I have this tooth that i believe to be a small nanotyrannus but i just want to get confirmation so let me know what you think everyone. Its from the Hell Creek Formation. Garfield Ct. Montana. Its CH is 11 mm Serration count: Distal 12 per 3 mm Mesial 15 per 3 mm The base of this tooth is beat up so its impossible to see if it would have had that rectangular pinch that is characteristic of nano teeth. There seems to be no twist of the mesial carinae In my opinion the serrations look peg like as seen in nano teeth.

    Dromaeosaur bones question

    I am doing some research on dromaeosaur bones, and I only found limited data and pictures on the web. I am particularly looking for caudal vertebrae and ribs pictures and structures. So I make an attempt towards TFF members knowledge and data !

    Dromaeosaurid Tooth

    Identification: This is a typical Dromaeosaurid tooth, with the serrations being differently-sized on each carina; the denticles are much smaller on the mesial carina compared to the distal carina. There's also slight recurvature, which is common in Dromaeosaurs. There are no other features present that allow for identification beyond Family. Described Dromaeosaurs in the Hell Creek Formation include Acheroraptor temertyorum and Dakotaraptor steini. Because both of their known dentitions are incomplete, this tooth may belong to either, or another undescribed Dromaeosaur. Identification further discussed here. Notes: CH: ~ 10.5 mm CBL: ~ 6 mm CBW: 3 mm Mesial denticle density: 8 / mm Distal denticle density: 4.5 / mm There is some minimal feeding wear on the tip, but this tooth is otherwise flawless.

    Hell Creek Dromaeosaurid

    Hi y'all, I picked up this gorgeous Dromaeosaurid tooth. It was listed as Acheroraptor and I bought it thinking it was one. However, upon receiving it and taking some measurements, I believe it may be a candidate for Dakotaraptor steini, as it virtually matches one in @Troodon's collection in every metric. It has a semi-oval base, with no ridges or facets commonly seen on Acheroraptor. The mesial carina is straight, and terminates almost 1/3 the CH from the base.     Hell Creek Vertebra

    Thanks for taking the time to check this out. The vert is ID'ed as Dromaeosaurus from Hell Creek Fm, Powder River County. I've been having a frustrating time trying to make better sense of this, since, as for as I know, there have been no Dromaeosaurus IDs in HC. Are any of you able to shed light on the likelihood of it being dromaeosaurid and anything beyond that? The measurements are 1.875" long * 1" wide * 1.625" tall. (I have a vert centrum ID'ed as Dromaeosaurus from a Judith River Fm and it's only about 0.8" * 0.4*0.5. Position may well explain the huge size difference, but I'm not sure about that either.) Any input you have would be greatly appreciated.

  15. Found lots of teeth today, here’s some I need a little help with as I’ve never found these before. I think one is a troodontid, one is maybe dromaeosaur, and the other I have no idea. (Apologies for the quality, my phone isn’t good macro photography) Dinosaur Park Fm
  16. Hi all, I could not resist and took another shot on my quest to obtain a Dakotaraptor tooth. Here the tooth in question this time: It was found in the Hell Creek Formation, Garfield County. Measurements are: CH 1,41 cm - CBL 0,68 cm - CBW 0,3 cm - denticles per 5mm are 22 mesial and 19 distal. Note the slight tilt of the denticles towards the tip of the tooth. It's the best fit I have found so far, what deviates from the dePalma description is the shape of the base, it has a pinch, but I would not consider it rectangular. As a side note, it looks exactly like the base of Acheroraptor teeth I have in my collection. But, I am not an expert Thanks for taking a look!

    ID requested: Kem Kem tooth

    Hi everyone, I am currently eyeing this Theropod tooth from the Kem Kem beds in Morocco which is listed as a Deltadromeus tooth. Now I know that no teeth can be attributed to Deltadromeus as no cranial material has been found yet and I know that most teeth sold as Deltadromeus are in fact Abelisaurid teeth but this tooth seems way to curved to be Abelisaurid which could my eye instantly. So I was think if this might be a Dromaeosaurid tooth which while rare (and not yet officially described from Kem Kem) are somethings found and sold as Deltadromeus. Or might this be a small anterior tooth of a Carcharodontosaurid, I would appreciate your thoughts and imput on this tooth before I commit to buy. These are currently the only pictures I have, I am not sure if they suffice to give a proper ID whether these are Dromaeosaurid or Carcharodontosaurid, so I also asked the seller for some photos of the base of the tooth and if possible some close ups of the serrations. Hi I have had this Hell Creek tooth that was previously ID as Dromaeosaur (possibly Dakota Raptor) for a while and the other day I decided to get my magnifying camera out to take a deeper look at the specimen as I have heard that some Dromaeosaur and small Nanotyranus teeth can be quite challenging to tell apart from one another. These are the close up pics of the specimen that I am still a little unsure about: Mesial side with serration showing a little carinae twist Distal side with straight carinae that stretches down to the base of the tooth in straight line: Cross-section looks a little rectangular with what seem like a small pinch on the sides? From the initial observation under the scope it does seem like this could be a Nanotyranus tooth instead of a Dromaeosaur but I would like to hear the experts thought and input on it just to be sure.     Identification: Dromaeosaurs have differently-sized serrations on each carina, the ones on the distal carina being much larger and pronounced than the mesial ones. The mesial carina also has a classic twist. Notes: This tooth has feeding wear facets on both the labial and lingual sides of the tip. Citation: SUES, HANS-DIETER, 1978.     Hell Creek Small Digit

    I found this tiny, slender bone at a Hell Creek microsite during my trip to the Dakotas in 2019 with PaleoProspectors. I'm not sure what it came from, but I'm hoping it's theropod, avian or otherwise. It's missing a section of the outer layer of bone and I believe the interior is hollow & filled in with the ironstone common in the formation. The dimensions are 1.7 cm in length and about 3 mm in width. I would appreciate any feedback you may have. In situ shot from the site: The closeup shots did not come out exactly how I wanted them lighting and detail wise. If you would like me to retake them or get different angles I'll happily do so.

    Tiny Lance fm. Theropod Tooth

    Hi everyone, tonight I want to share with you one of my favorite finds from the summer, this absolutely tiny theropod tooth I found looking through anthill matrix in Wyoming's Lance formation. It's currently the smallest theropod tooth in my collection and it's always an interesting contrast when compared to my largest personally found tooth (a Tyrannosaurid from Judith River). It's about 3 mm in length and a bit over 1.5 mm in width. I believe the serrations have been worn off as they are incredibly faint in some areas and absent in others. I'm not sure if the way the light gleans off the enamel indicates that it would be any particular species, whether it looks more like the result of the pinched base typical of Nanotyrannus teeth or would count as ridges as seen in Acheroraptor. I would like to know the opinions of my fellow members on it's potential identity and the likelihood of it being from a young juvenile/infant/prenatal individual.
