  1. After recent lessons about fake Drotops Armatus, I try to be as cautious as possible when making new purchases. I recently found a really nice double Drotops megalomanicus for sell. To me, it is just too pretty to ignore. But since this is my first time seeing such specimen (two huge Drotops megalomanicus stacking together), I think it is better to ask for options before making the expensive commitment. To me, this looks like a real one because of the white line (silica vein) running across the body. But a draw back is the not so detailed eyes, which seems suspicious. Let me know your opinions!
  2. I recently spent [price redacted) on this Drotops Armatus from an USA fossil dealer. But when I received it, I became very suspicious. First, I examined it clearly and there isn't any sign of cracking and glueing, which is pretty unusual based on my knowledge. Second, the color is just too brown. Seller claimed this specimen is from Altchana formation, but I never seen such color in any other Morocco trilobites. Third, there are around 10-20 tiny little holes (less than 0.5mm) on the bug surface, which looked very suspicious. Seller claimed these holes are caused by sand blaster. Can I trust this specimen? Very worried and want some advice! IMG_5745.HEIC IMG_5746.HEIC
  3. Hey everyone, I just wanted to see what you guys thought of this Drotops. I know they are commonly faked and the lacquer job on this specimen isn't the best. Let me know what you think, I can take more pictures if you want.

    Drotops megalomanicus?

Hello, I purchased this and I think it's a Drotops megalomanicus, but I wanted to hear a second opinion for confirmation. The trilobite measures 13,5cm. Thanks!
  5. Found this Drotops for sale from someone in my town. It looks weird to me, I need some opinions regarding this.

    Drotops megalomanicus Real or Fake?

Hello. I bough this item from a fossil shop in France years ago. I am wondering whether it is Drotops megalomanicus and more importantly if it is a fake. I hope you can tell from the photos. Recently members Coco and JBKansas helped me identify some fake ammonites I thought were real fossils. Thank you in advance for your reply. Constantinos.
  7. Hello, I am very interested in collecting trilobites and so far I nearly have one from every order (except Agnostia and a questionable Redlichiid), but though I feel I am fairly knowledgable on them overall, I am embarrassed I cannot tell the difference between species such as Phacops, Reedops, Adrisiops, Drotops, Morocops, Austerops, and Chotecops. Species like Hollarops or Morocconites are easy to tell because they have the spines or spikes though their body looks very similar. Usually when I buy trilobites they are labelled but the ones I have gotten as gifts or from rock shops are generally unlabelled. Some are easy to tell due to context (Chotecops are generally preserved in pyrite, Drotops generally being huge,) but Phacops and Reedops?! To me, they look identical, and I've heard the best way to see is counting eye facets, but several of mine have only poorly preserved or partial eyes. I also recently acquired a pair of labelled Adrisiops and I heard that they are referred to as a 'smiley Phacops' but I am not sure where that comes from. I also think the Proetid Gerastos looks quite superficially similar to all of these species, especially when poorly preserved, but I think I can tell that one apart due to it's smaller eyes and different glabella. On top of that, I am very concerned I have some fakes from the time when I was younger and did not know very much about looking for casts or composites and those can have all kinds of crazy things going on that are not in 'real' trilobites. I will try to factor out the suspicious trilobites when comparing my collection. Are there any other context clues or morphology I can look for on these similar species? Comparison photos would be nice to see the visual differences if there are any! Thank you to anyone who helps!
  8. Hey guys, Recently my friend bought a trilobite and the seller told him it was a reedops, but I checked some pictures on the website and found that it should be a drotops? Both eyes showing good details but still quite doubt that this one is a fake trilobite cuz the seller just gave him a wrong information. I don't have any experience on how to recognize these kind of fossils. The last picture was send to him by the seller. Please help me T T Many thanks!!

    Trilobite ID

Hey everyone, I just received this fossil from a friend and was wondering if anybody could help me properly ID it. Thanks!
  10. This trilobite would be around 7" if prone. It had poor restoration done to it which I removed as best I could. There may be one or two small patches of restoration that I missed. In exchange for this trilobite I'm interested in all offers, especially high quality complete fossil fish, other high quality trilobites, and medium to big European Ammonites.
  11. I have had this drotops for a while. It measures over 5.5" long by 3 inches wide. I have looked very careful for repair and the only place it looks like it might have it is a band between the eyes and the tip of the nose. I cannot tell if it is bad prep work or repair. In exchange for this trilobite I'm interested in all offers, especially high quality complete fossil fish, other high quality trilobites, and medium to big European Ammonites.
  12. So I recently purchased a moroccan drotops trilobite, mostly because of its size. It is 5 1/2 inches. It was a impulse purchase and I was not concidering if it might be fake. The reason I think it might not be genuine is the random scratches all around the trilobite on the matrix. I remembered reading that scratches like that are sometimes added to hide signs of it being faked. My original thought when I bought it, was that the scratches could be there from it being quickly prepped. Let me know what you all think! I've attached pictures of it from all angles. Thank you!
  13. Hi, I am new here and just starting to find and purchase fossils for my collection. Up until now, everything I have purchased appears to be legit. Today, however, I just received a fossil that is not even the same rock as shown in the original auction photos. The first thing I noticed is that the fossil was leaving black marks, almost like a pencil would, on white paper. I decided to wash it off and saw a few patches that were a completely different color of grey and looked like a glue/putty material. Restoration, maybe? This grey stuff was soft and easily scraped off with a razor blade. Later, after I had it all washed off, I compared it to the original auction photos, and I realized that this is not even the same fossil. It's too bad because now I am not able to show before and after photos of the fossil that I received, though I will show the photos from the auction listing. Original auction photos:
  14. Hello all. I just wanted some advice on this drotops megalomanicus that I am considering adding to my collection. How is the prep work on it? It is 4.25 inches, which I thought was large. Would you go for it if you were me?

    Beautiful Drotops's

Hello, everyone I'm a new member located in Korea, South and highly interested in collecting Moroccan trilobites. We all know there are tons of fake specimens out there and I picked some good quality ones that seems to be genuine or partially restored. Here are the photos and I hope to share this images as well as yours. Just seeing such specimens is always exciting 'Enrolled' Drotops Armatus Huge sized 6.2 inch Drotops Megalomanicus Another huge sized 6.2 inch Drotops Megalomanicus
  16. May Santa bring that fossil you always wish for.

    drotops megalomanicus?

Just curios as to what species this is I looked at phacops but non seem to have such defined bumps for a better word also the eyes don't match up at least not to the ones I have looked at. Again questioning this id because what is exposed so far is rather small 0.86" by 0.80" and the size of the matrix block is 2.51" by 2.34" Also I am prepping this currently so not fully exposed yet don't know if that will hinder the possibility of confirming an id. Thanks Matt
