Is this a fake trilobite fossil?
Ekuzo posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey guys, Recently my friend bought a trilobite and the seller told him it was a reedops, but I checked some pictures on the website and found that it should be a drotops? Both eyes showing good details but still quite doubt that this one is a fake trilobite cuz the seller just gave him a wrong information. I don't have any experience on how to recognize these kind of fossils. The last picture was send to him by the seller. Please help me T T Many thanks!! -
Hey everyone, I just received this fossil from a friend and was wondering if anybody could help me properly ID it. Thanks!

Near 7 inch drotops trilobite for trade
mattbsharks posted a topic in Member Fossil Trades Bulletin Board
This trilobite would be around 7" if prone. It had poor restoration done to it which I removed as best I could. There may be one or two small patches of restoration that I missed. In exchange for this trilobite I'm interested in all offers, especially high quality complete fossil fish, other high quality trilobites, and medium to big European Ammonites. -
5.5+ inch drotops trilobite for trade
mattbsharks posted a topic in Member Fossil Trades Bulletin Board
I have had this drotops for a while. It measures over 5.5" long by 3 inches wide. I have looked very careful for repair and the only place it looks like it might have it is a band between the eyes and the tip of the nose. I cannot tell if it is bad prep work or repair. In exchange for this trilobite I'm interested in all offers, especially high quality complete fossil fish, other high quality trilobites, and medium to big European Ammonites. -
Large dotops, fake or bad prep?
MarielleK posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
So I recently purchased a moroccan drotops trilobite, mostly because of its size. It is 5 1/2 inches. It was a impulse purchase and I was not concidering if it might be fake. The reason I think it might not be genuine is the random scratches all around the trilobite on the matrix. I remembered reading that scratches like that are sometimes added to hide signs of it being faked. My original thought when I bought it, was that the scratches could be there from it being quickly prepped. Let me know what you all think! I've attached pictures of it from all angles. Thank you! -
Trilobite fake or really bad preparation?
lasersaber posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hi, I am new here and just starting to find and purchase fossils for my collection. Up until now, everything I have purchased appears to be legit. Today, however, I just received a fossil that is not even the same rock as shown in the original auction photos. The first thing I noticed is that the fossil was leaving black marks, almost like a pencil would, on white paper. I decided to wash it off and saw a few patches that were a completely different color of grey and looked like a glue/putty material. Restoration, maybe? This grey stuff was soft and easily scraped off with a r -
Hello all. I just wanted some advice on this drotops megalomanicus that I am considering adding to my collection. How is the prep work on it? It is 4.25 inches, which I thought was large. Would you go for it if you were me?

Hello, everyone I'm a new member located in Korea, South and highly interested in collecting Moroccan trilobites. We all know there are tons of fake specimens out there and I picked some good quality ones that seems to be genuine or partially restored. Here are the photos and I hope to share this images as well as yours. Just seeing such specimens is always exciting 'Enrolled' Drotops Armatus Huge sized 6.2 inch Drotops Megalomanicu

Just curios as to what species this is I looked at phacops but non seem to have such defined bumps for a better word also the eyes don't match up at least not to the ones I have looked at. Again questioning this id because what is exposed so far is rather small 0.86" by 0.80" and the size of the matrix block is 2.51" by 2.34" Also I am prepping this currently so not fully exposed yet don't know if that will hinder the possibility of confirming an id. Thanks Matt

Hi guys, Recently I purchased my first fossil and was wondering if it's a fake as it was listed on the auction site as coming from Morocco and was fairly preserved and cheap as compared to others. It's a 3.3" Drotops Megalomanicus and has a crack going through the cephalon and the matrix all the way. I don't see any reasons to believe it was glued to the matrix and eyes have details as shown. Don't see many scratches so it's probably painted Thanks!

Trilobite authenticity
pugrockprincess posted a topic in Is It Real? How to Recognize Fossil Fabrications
Hey everyone! New here. I have a lovely collection of trilobites and have recently purchased a large Devonian Phacops (according to description). He's over 14cm long as you can see by the photo on my hand so I wanted to check its authenticity. I've noted the nice eye detail which I know can be hard to fake. It's a VERY smelly fossil though (actually making me sneeze). Almost a cross between plaster and laundry detergent. Is there anything that could cause this if it's genuine? I will assume it's had small cosmetic enhancements but I cannot find any cracks on the matrix etc. Not even sure what -
