One beach hunt and two digs yielded four cow shark and a bunch of small teeth, some of which may have been in my last photo. The cow shark, my focus, are all new but frustrating; cannot say for sure if two really have non-serrated first points. Possibly broken? Too much cold water in the creek to hunt for a few more days.

Been at it for about a year now and I try to hit the creeks at least twice/month if I can help it. The "loose" pics are either newer finds that haven't made their way into the display yet, or finds that have their own display. Most of these were rescued from the Gainesville area. Some are from the Peace River & Joshua Creek, as well as Manasota, Caspersen, Venice & Fort Clinch beaches. I was also lucky enough to discover a previously unknown spot VERY close to home, while scouting one day! Dr. Hulbert (w/ UF) confirmed it is a new spot, but was reluctant to check it out as none of my initial finds were extinct species... I have since found horse teeth at that location and can't wait for water levels to go back down!!! Hoping to add a few new species to my collection on my upcoming trip to GMR & one of the Summerville creeks (not sure which one yet but would love to find my first Angi & GW)... the GW in my pics was actually found by my Grandfather in Panama in the 70s! Thanks for looking : )

Too hot to get out much and lots of competition on the beach (or at least footprints). More beach glass than teeth lately. Went out and played in the mud while still relatively warm. Quiet, not much wildlife activity. Lots of broken stuff. Hit an old spot, hoping for cowshark teeth, but didn't find any. Did get two angel shark teeth and a bunch of drum teeth. Several vertebrae, mostly broken. Found another skate stinger piece. Less sand tiger spikes than usual. One of the triangular teeth (sort of in-between a spike and a triangle, the pale one just above the stinger was unusual in that it was three times as thick and heavy as similar sized gray shark teeth blades, possibly thicker than the biggest triangular tooth. Fine serrated edge, don't know if a different species or just a weird tooth? @cck Any ideas?

Quick trip in icy water and rain. Usual spots didn't yield much. In gravel, a lot of drum teeth (spilled, but the ones in photo are representative), broken teeth, skate teeth, verts, and Tilly bones with fins. Probably should have waited for a nicer day, soaked at cold with little to show.

A little under the weather (and having truck trouble) but took a break for a few hours hoping to find more shrimp coprolites after recent thunderstorms. Humid, but not particularly hot, lots of frogs. Despite lots of digging in last week's spot, not much mixed in the gravel, mostly small broken stuff (one vert, one angel shark tooth, some drum teeth). I always wonder if I am 'mining' an area of the stream bed that was picked over 30 years ago. Finally found a mottled tiger shark tooth, relatively rare on that site. I have some small pieces drying but no strong suspicions of shrimp coprolites. Before leaving I hit an older spot which has been good for cowshark teeth. First screening found a broken ecphora, a pretty rootless cowshark tooth and a broken cowshark tooth. On the way out checked two other spots, maybe next week?

Beautiful day, lots of spring peeper frogs everywhere. Creek looked like it had been extensively worked while I have been away. Broken shells and torn down banks showed the local kids(?) have been busy. Everything greening up, yet not a lot of mosquitoes, water levels dropping. Hunting was mediocre, found four ecphorae in other people's tailings, none perfect (one encrusted with barnicles, not shown). Lots of small teeth (but no cow shark or angel shark teeth), some skate pieces, a few broken drum teeth, a nice fin Tilly bone. With Spring turkey season coming up soon, I'll be staying away from the creek for a while, trying the beaches instead.

My hip is bothering me, but we've had beautiful weather the last few days so I had to get out. Ended up being a short trip. Most of what I found was broken and small and about half as many teeth as usual, but I tried. Tape is in cm. A three inch ecphora, but missing a tail. Two or three skate stinger pieces. A nice but hard to scan cowshark upper, and pieces, some fin tilly bones, a few angel shark and drum. Lots of animal tracks along the creek but no frogs, crawfish or salamanders, just scud shrimp.

Yesterday was warm here (75 F=~24 C), but rainy and extremely windy. The spring peepers (early frogs were out and noisy!) About 45 F this morning (7C), and less windy, so decided to take a chance on trees and limbs falling. The little creek was up and difficult to get into the spot I wanted to hunt (I got soaked and cold as it is), so I just tried a mixture of old and new 'holes'. Was expecting the water to be much warmer, but must be spring fed, extremely cold. The scud (tiny freshwater shrimp) are breeding and are everywhere, salamanders as well. Saw one big green frog and a box turtle (hopefully they'll survive the freeze tomorrow). Screening near a hole with raccoon tracks came up with four crawfish claw points. Not so good on the shark teeth, mostly small and broken (and lost two of three angel shark teeth I found). The yellow sand shark tooth was not well fossilized; the roots were intact, but completely crumbled in the bucket. As usual when slow, picked up lots of stuff that will probably end up in my driveway. Decided to try one last spot (mostly dug out) where I used to find cow shark teeth, and my first scoop of sand and gravel yielded a nice cow shark tooth with root! Made the trip. Hopefully the water will drop eventually and I can dig in flooded spots.

Tried to get out before the ice storm in search of cowshark teeth (found none and hunted hard). Lots of small sand tiger teeth, including a crooked one and a symphyseal, and lots of split teeth. Lots of drum teeth, (the dull side is more interesting than the glossy side). Four angel teeth that stand up on their triangular base, two whose root is damaged. Two or three mako (broken). Lots of small triangular teeth (dusky, bull, gray? not sure what all they are). Lots of batoid/ skate teeth, but no stingers or denticles. One whole vert and a small disc echinoid. Lots ofsmall 'whale bone' and bits to go through. Not what I was after, but quantity if not quality was good.

Spent extra time looking for a spot, wandered the creek trying holes (not so deep). A few spots that looked spectacular and virtually a wall of shells yielded nothing. Most spots where there were loose shells in the creek also had small teeth (mostly broken sand tiger, nothing spectacular or big). Overall lots of teeth, but quality was not great. My "best" spots required a lot of digging. But the weather was nice, Spring-like and it was a pleasant hunt. Found ten or so drum teeth, three ecphora (one small one is complete), four angel shark teeth, a tooth in matrix (I don't see many of those, fine serrations), badly broken cowshark, four vertebra-- all different. Most of the triangular bull shark/ dusky/ gray shark teeth I find have fine serrations, two today had pronounced (including the biggest tooth), but not as striking as the usual hemipristis(?). Found a tiger shark tooth, much more common on the beaches. So still looking for a good spot, lot of digging ahead, but a good problem to have.
