Hello! Recently I was going through old fossils I had from Caspersan Beach and/or Venice Beach FL, when I came across an interesting fossil. I’m not sure whether it’s a dugong bone fragment or a whalebone fragment, so I figured I’d post it here to find out what it is. It’s about 1.5 x 1.5 inches on each side, and fairly thin. I’ve seen things about dugong ribs being found there, although this seems kinda thin and flat to be a rib, so I was curious to know if it could be figured out what part of the skeleton it came from? Thank you!

Another find from the Peace River, FL last week. Upon first look I thought it was a very worn Tapir tooth. When I got it home I started to think the center was too hollowed out to be Tapir. Searching on line and in the Forum galleries I got the idea it might be Manatee or Dugong. I keep going back and forth between Tapir and Manatee so finally decided to get opinions from the group here. Measurements of crown: 1" x 7/8" x 6/8" (at highest point) or 23mm x 21mm x 17mm This first view is what has me thinking Manatee or Dugong Then this one has me leaning to Tapir Last two views: All opinions are appreciated. Thanks!

Had a good day on the Peace River, FL yesterday picking up three different periotics, ear bones. Two I easily identified as I have previous examples (dolphin & horse). The third has me somewhat baffled. I have looked at images of periotics from the pygmy sperm whale, right whale, dugong and seal along with numerous others and have not found what I think is a conclusive match. Should I be looking at land mammals or am I just missing the connection to one of the cetaceans? Input from the group would be greatly appreciated. I also hope @Shellseeker, Jack, has a chance to weigh in - I know he has a lot of interest and experience with the ear bones found on the Peace. Possibly the good Doctor @Boesse may also have the time to offer an opinion The specimen measures: 50mm x 45mm x 31mm or 2" x 1 5/8" x 1 1/4"

So literally just got back out to my spot from yesterday in the hopes of continuing with a good shovel to start off the day. First shovel of the day results in this: Dugong? Tapir? Any help appreciated! @Shellseeker @Harry Pristis

Another found in the area where a lot of Dugong fragments were. The shape and patterns of the core has me wondering what it might be.

Another find from last week in an area where I found a lot of Dugong fragments. This one I was at a loss on. Thinner than anything I have found of similar length.

Hello Forum, Found this river diving in South Carolina. Not sure what to make of it, looks like solid bone, like a dugong rib, except that its very small, only 4 inches. One end is broken, and solid, no marrow cavity. The other end terminates in a point, and where the pointy end is chipped, it looks like normal spongy looking bone structure. Any ideas what this may belong to?
