Myliobatis Latidens(?); Eagle Ray- tooth plate? **bonus points** anyone able to ID the rock/mineral as well??
DoubleD843 posted a topic in Fossil ID
Initial thoughts after doing quite a bit of research- Eagle Ray tooth plate. Not 100% sure on this. As far as the specific rock/mineral containing the fossil….perhaps rose quartz? Totally a shot in the dark here. Would appreciate any feedback! -

Hi, I found these 2 unusual little pieces on a Tampa Bay beach in Florida. They are roughly 1 x 1 inches. At first I thought pottery shards or some seashell mold and put them in a box. I just saw a photo that they resemble, labeled Ray Dental plate. (brown photo) I attached 3 photos front and back of my specimen. What do you think?

Found this partial ray tooth plate in January while fossil hunting in the Aquia Formation along the Potomac River. Does this look like Myliobatis dixoni to you? I am terrible at identifying ray teeth, so really not feeling certain about that ID.

Originally from the Midwest, I've been hunting for fossils for about 50 years and found about two "fossilized sea shells". And this was not from a lack of trying! I moved to Summerville, SC about three years ago for a job that included lots of travel. Now that travel is finished and meeting new friends in the area, I have connected with some kids that stumbled onto something that I think is big! Had I grown up in Summerville, I probably would have change my career to paleontology instead of Electrical Engineering. I am amazed at the finds here in my home town. I have taken my wife and kids including their friends to a spot that allows them to find Shark teeth (at a minimum) within 2 minutes of arriving to an area. My dilemma, I would like to know what these type of "dermal denticles" are. For every 20 shark teeth I find, I find one of these. Please refer to the attached pics. Thanks Matt

I live in the Arabian desert, near Jebel Hafeet. Yesterday I found a pavement tooth of an eagle ray. Today I found a mysterious fossil which looks like it might be part of the body and fins/wings of a ray. I appreciate that their bodies were made of cartilage and that is not usually preserved very well, but in some cases it’s possible. Any opinions would be most appreciated. Thank you so much.

My first post Need assistance with fossil ID. I believe this is a eagle ray tooth. Stratigraphic unit is likely Severn Formation, Upper Cretaceous in Maryland. Found along Magothy River near Ulmstead. Could also be from Paleocene Aquia formation as stratigraphic contact in cliff by beach. If Severn Formation - I believe an early example of ray in fossil record.

I bought these a few years ago at a local show. They were mixed in with a bunch of small Otodus and sand tiger shark teeth. I don't remember if the vendor said where they came from and I didn't write it down, but I think Morocco is likely. I have no idea what these might be. Any possible id would be greatly appreciated.

I have a difficult time telling what these are. I have a book where it shows very similar shaped items labeled as dermal scoots for crocodiles, eagle ray, or fish ballast bones. I'm wondering if anyone can help me narrow it down. Thanks in advance for all the great advice!
