What geological event could have created this environment ?
ScottInTexas posted a topic in Questions & Answers
There is a stretch of super rocky embankment on our local Army Corps of Engineers built lake that has thousands of common marine fossils and slip rock fossils where these bolder configurations lay. My question is - A few of the huge boulders are blackened as if they had been exposed to fires while some that are planted nearby are white as can be so I am curious as to what could have caused this type of situation. Seems to me that a huge forest fire would have scorched the stones right next to the darker ones but it's not like that at all. The bank is littered with these huge boulders and are mixed charred blackened and snow white stone as noted in the attached pictures. I added a picture of the bank looking toward the water for further reference. The bank stretches just over a mile. I made the uneducated assumption that it was somehow related to the earthquake that occurred at the spot evidenced by the slip rock fossils that are littered all over the place that I am showing with the photo set but otherwise I have absolutely no clue.- 14 replies

I've had a few e-mails and PMs, so thanks for those everybody, but just a message here to let you all know the latest. Last night, a little after 11 pm, the sofa started jiggling about, so I asked wifey if she was bouncing around and she asked me the same thing. Then we noticed that the pictures on the walls were flapping about and there were ripples in the coffee. We knew what was happening and after a couple of minutes, it stopped. Fes has been spared as we are a considerable distance from the epicentre, though places further south and west have been badly hit. I've spent today confirming that the people I know down there are okay and, thankfully, they are. wifey and I went and gave blood, there's not much else we can do. Thousands are dead, injured and missing down there. It was completely unexpected and terribly sad.

It s been a while since Ive been on the site, Life interupted our family fossiling adventures for a while. Our daugther, who pretty much leads our fossil and rock hound adventures has gone off to college to become a paleontogist. She was home for the holidays and we had the chance to visit Eureka CA, Samoa Point shortly after the 6.2 earthquake on December 20th. We have noticed in past visits that shortly after quakes large number of fossilized sand dollars appear on the beaches of Somaoa. this is the result of less than half an hour of walking the beach on a rainy sunday afternoon. Hope you enjoy our finds and hope to post more often in the future Itst

The Long-Lost Tale of an 18th-Century Tsunami, as Told by Trees
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Fossil News
The Long-Lost Tale of an 18th-Century Tsunami, as Told by Trees Local evidence of the cataclysm has literally washed away over the years. But Oregon’s Douglas firs may have recorded clues deep in their tree rings. Max G. Levy, Wired Magazine, September 29, 2021 the paper is: Dziak, R. P., Black, B. A., Wei, Y., and Merle, S. I’ve been busy with work the last few days and have been catching up on the news this morning. Just realized that California got hit with 2 big earthquakes in as many days, and it may not be over yet! I know we have some forum members that live out that way. Everyone ok?

Hi there, I'm new to fossil hunting and came across this today in the newly surfaced coast land mass at Kaikoura, New Zealand. It's quite large; at least a foot long. Move read about the fossils of ancient dolphins being found in the area and was wondering if there was any possibility of this being linked to those finds? any help in identifying it would be greatly appreciated!

Upsurge in big earthquakes predicted for 2018 as Earth rotation slows
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Geology
Upsurge in big earthquakes predicted for 2018 as Earth rotation slows. Scientists say number of severe quakes is likely to rise strongly next year because of a periodic slowing of the Earth’s rotation. the Guardian. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/18/2018-set-to-be-year-of-big-earthquakes Sloshing of Earth’s core may spike major earthquakes By Paul Voosen, Science, October 30, 2017 http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/10/sloshing-earth-s-core-may-spike-major-earthquakes Bilham, R., and Bendick, R., 2017. Sources of Tsunamis From Krakatoa to Monterey Bay
Oxytropidoceras posted a topic in Rocks & Minerals
Below is a very interesting talk about tsunamis and how they are created. One quite interesting point that came up during the lecture and questions is that asteroid and meteorite impact are quite ineffective at creating tsunamis and the tsunamis threat from them has been greatly overestimated and the impact tsunamis shown in popular films is quite overexaggerated. The 10 day dig at Wasson Bluff, where the oldest dinosaurs found in Canada can be found, wrapped up last Sunday. Many interesting finds were made and lots of people contributed to make this dig a successful one. Dr. Tim Fedak posted on the Earthquake Dinosaurs's blog a very good summary of the successful project. Click on the link to check it out! http://earthquake-dinosaurs.ca/volunteers-and-science/ I was very proud to have participated in this project! Cheers! - Keenan
