This "rock" was interesting to me because of it's smoothed angles & interesting horizonal lines on inside. Feels polished with so many angles. About 1 11/16 long by 1.5" by 1/2" at thickest point. Found in mountains of East Tennessee. Color is actually more brown than photos, not black. Please see all pics for angles. Any info appreciated!

Hi! My name is Karla, and I live in Knoxville, TN. I've always kept an eye out for fossils when I walk anywhere, but recently I've been hunting a bit more because my dad found a really cool nautiloid, which this forum helped me ID. That find has awakened the fossil hunter in me! I'm glad to be here, and I appreciate that everyone is so willing to help ID anything people throw out there (including me! ).

Hello all, I found this in a steam in East Tennessee about 20 years ago. I'm new to fossils so I was wondering if anyone could help identify. I spoke with a marine archaeologist who thought it might be a cephalopod or part of a trilobite. Thank you, Michael

Do you think that the smooth hole indention in this rock worn by water dripping or man made? What kind of rock is it? I suspect hole made by water but wondering if it could be mortar for pestle... Rock is irregular shape. Measures roughly 6" wide by 5" wide by 2.5" at tallest point. Hole is 1.5" wide. Hard to measure depth but looks to be 1/2" and 3/4". Color is not as gray as it appears in some photos. More tan like first photo. Wish I could say where it was found but I found it in East Tennessee near Jefferson City at an antique/junk store. Sweet country lady said she thought her son might have found it down in the holler. (:I just thought it was interesting. Of course, we did have Native Americans in this area. To me, it was worth the $5 bucks I paid for it regardless.

Hello everyone! I just joined the forum. I am from the Oak Ridge area of East Tennessee, and I recently got back into fossil collecting. I have never done it before it Tennessee, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on where in East Tennessee I can go to find fossils. Thanks so much to everyone here who is discovering history and making it public. I am happy to be part of the group.
